Exam in 1.5 Months; Study Schedule!!

So 2 weeks ago I started with this thread/schedule:
(What I have finished is in Green and What I still have to do is in Red)
(Exam in 2 months; Study Schedule !!)

5)April 27th: Start DIT !!

So as you can see, I still have to finish off working on Neuro, Micro and Biochem. Then take an NBME and start on DIT. After a lot of contemplation on what sources to use for Neuro and Micro I have finally decided.

Here is my new plan -

1) April 24th to April 30th:
-Neuro (Kaplan Vids + Notes)
-100 cases of Medical Ethics
-Micro (Kaplan Notes)
-Biochem (FA)

2) April 30th: NBME 5 or 6

3) May 1st: Start DIT
(try to finish within 3 weeks)

I am hoping to finish DIT by May 20th and that will give me about 2 weeks to my exam. My eligibility period ends June 30th but I want to be READY for the exam by the first week of June.

Any advice or suggestions are welcome! And if anyone wants to tag along for the DIT ride, let me know, we can work on it together and keep each other motivated!

Haven't booked my date yet.
Qbank - doing it subject wise and using it as a learning tool. Only done about 5 blocks so far.
NBME - taking it on Sunday hopefully and that will be the real assessment of where I stand.


What about you? You're planning on your exam around the same time right?

Update:

-Finished the first 3 chapters for neuro. Pretty small chapters. Gonna try doing a couple more chapters before sleeping tonight.
-Finished 50 cases out of 100 medical ethics cases. Pretty good read!

Oh ok. What do you do at the hospital? I have no clinical experience yet but I am excited to start my rotations in the summer (hopefully!).


Done two more chapters of Neuro. Thats 5 down out of 11 (did almost 2.5 hours of videos today). Have about 6.5 hours of videos left...gonna be a long day tomorrow trying to get most of it done!!

Funny and scary at the same time that I have been basically making a review schedule and when I looked at your post they are almost the same.

Qbank has been great so far, however I really need to spend a lot more time on it then I have been giving it these past two weeks. I need to hurry up and get to at least 80% finish before I buy UWorld.

Medical ethics really helped me a lot on the NBME I took brought me to average. I need to finish some of the cases I skipped and hopefully UW questions will get me to above average there.

HY neuro, basically neuro has been a rough subject for me and I see it continue to be rough. I need to spend a lot of time here, I'm started on Monday, I read through so many chapters today in HY plus I used RR for some of the pathology topics.

I don't do anything at the hospital. I had to take my sister to the hospital since she had a surgery yesterday. I spend half the day yesterday and half of the day today.. I am gonu have to start studyn in 2 hrs (after my nap). I don't have clinical experience either. But ye I am excited to start it as well.

haha that is funny. How is your schedule coming a long ? I am always a day or two behind some how. Neuro is one of my weakest courses as well but since yesterday I've been doing KLN Vids and I think I am finally getting the hang of it! Hope your studying is going good!

well i need a lot of help...i took my slot of may june july..but i don feel prepared yet as lot to do..still left with my 3 Ps ..i mean i did it before but haphazardly..2 years back..now starting again...i usually listen to kaplan vidz in morning then do UW n FA in evenings..but itz not enough for me,,need to extract more from my day..plz tell me how to complete ..i mean how to study everything in one day..path pharma physio...do UW n FA as well...i wanna confess m addicted to surfing..donno what keeps me engrossed n time simply flies n i regret at the end of day,,,,that i didnt study well..plz help me

Well firstly, don't feel like you need to do everything in one day as thats not possible and it won't be efficient either. If your exam is in July then you still have May, June and some of July. For the three P's I decided to spend 10 days per subject! Read my KLN for Physio and Pharm ( and did questions from Q bank). For Path I did pathoma and read my notes from KLN (this took longer than 10 days). So basically go after each subject and you'll be happier once its done rather than taking a month trying to do each one and not finishing any!

So my advice is take about a month for the 3 p's ... get them down solid since thats about 60% of the exam. Then take about 2 weeks and review everything else that's HY .. like micro, neuro, genetics, immuno, etc (that's doable).

Then take an NBME (after the review). Then read first aid or do DIT and then take another NBME to see how much you've improved.

I have a hard time trying to consolidate each day with reading and then questions too. I started qbank but i've only finished about 300 questions! Planning on doing more n more questions as I get closer to my exam.

Just did a block of 30 questions and scored 70% ...messed up a few Behavioral Questions - child milestones, legal issue ethics etc .. gonna review it later on.

I am still on the neuro (takes the 2nd week of my time!) but its worth it!
I mean neuro is not the topic that you can skim and say - call me "crank" (if you know who teenage turtles are :-) )

I want to do biostats, molecular bio and revitalize a couple memorizable topics and then take the NBME in one or 2 weeks from now.

One more thing I realized after I rescheduled the test: I did analyzie "WHAT" made me reschedule... and it was an internal feeling of being unsatisfied with my own preparation. Like I know my shady areas and have a feeling "oh, if only I had time to go through them..." Now I do have time.

I have 3 moleskine notebooks with notes from UW, they are lying in the dust for months already, I decided to get those notes to FA, make it a part of the "1st Taus read" and then during the 2nd read I do not have to run around with books falling out of my pockets... Cuz ill have only FA to work with.

After experience with a copy of FA'11 I do turn pages accurately, so the '12book will not fall apart again haha

lol that's a good idea. I might add my UW notes to FA as well. I printed them out and it was about 70 pages back n forth.

I didnt like it, its too broad, and not very HY, but I need to consolidate what I learned from HY neuro, otherwise it will go away....

I'm almost done Neuro. Just 2 chapters left. Didn't get much done yesterday. Gonna finish Neuro off today and start on Biochem from FA. Then focus the rest of the time on Micro till Sunday (when I take my NBME).

And I'm not using HY Neuro...just using Kaplan Notes and Videos (decided to watch all of them).

to tell you the truth for me it worked this way - I read KLN back in a day and had a understanding of what is what... Now I had 1.5 weeks going through relatively thin (180 pages) of HY Neuro and I know that now I know what I should know for the test.

I am still gonna finish what I started though since I only have one chapter left

I think I will be using HY Neuro for the pictures and may be skim through it.

Well, when I get the question right - I am 100% sure why it is right, and those that I got wrong - I usually stuck between 2 answers...
I do not even know how many questions I did during this year, but most of them do test same concepts... over and over again.
There are the same buzzwords, same presentations...
I seriously had 30-35 minutes left after I was done with these 2 blocks.
But what gets me sometimes is "splitting hair" between 2 close answers.

I think it is the lack of detail that I am experiencing now.
I do try to consolidate the details when I get something wrong, but I do not waste time reading through the stuff that I am sure about...
It is the most time saving principle.

Well, when I get the question right - I am 100% sure why it is right, and those that I got wrong - I usually stuck between 2 answers...
I do not even know how many questions I did during this year, but most of them do test same concepts... over and over again.
There are the same buzzwords, same presentations...
I seriously had 30-35 minutes left after I was done with these 2 blocks.
But what gets me sometimes is "splitting hair" between 2 close answers.

I think it is the lack of detail that I am experiencing now.
I do try to consolidate the details when I get something wrong, but I do not waste time reading through the stuff that I am sure about...
It is the most time saving principle.

Ah I see... I can't do that lol I have to read through the whole explanation once. When I go over the Qbank a second time, I will only go over the questions I got right or the ones I marked. Man, take your test already!! You're seem to be ready for it haha

Can't really suggest what you should do since I didnt find the videos that helpful. But then again it keeps you going since you're listening to something rather than just reading on your own ...where sometimes you might get distracted easily.

Just finished the 100 cases of medical ethics. It was a good read and very informative. I did it like as if I'm doing question blocks. Got 80 out of 102 correct (78%)

I'm in the first read of my kaplan lecture notes...so how many questions do you think i should do per day? some days i get in a block but some days i don even get to do questionss....

Good job meng! I hope to start Neuro questions soon. I am trying to do some questions which is holding me back from my schedule but I decided that its better to focus on some questions before taking the NBME.

I working on Biochem ...didn't get time to start it yesterday. Will be doing questions in the Qbank from Immuno, Genetics, Beh Sci, Neuro, Embryo and Biochem.

I am thinking I need to spend some time finishing up as many questions as I can in like 3-4 days and then take the NBME. I want to finish Micro by Sunday ..so still gonna hope to finish everything according to this plan but just gonna push the NBME & DIT off by like 4 days lol

what I've noticed is that I can solve at best 70-75% of whatever questions I can get my hands on... even NBME... but 70% on nbme is a low score =(

Yeah 70% on the NBME means 140 out of 200 questions ..and using the formula (1.4*NBME score) thats around 196-200 usmle score. I think at this point I'll be happy if I can my offline NBME score to around 150-160. I am thinking of taking a couple offline NBME forms before taking the online form as dwiqed poured out his wisdom on another thread

It depends on how much time you spend on reading. If you spend most of the time reading then you wont have much time on questions.

UW should be used random, timed mixed blocks. How long did you get it for? Kaplan qbank could be used as a learning tool to do questions subjectwise. Anyway, in the last 4-5 weeks leading up to the exam you should be at random mixed blocks. (I am trying to get there asap as well )

Endo Physio - Out of 11 chapters in kaplan - Done 2 chapters of KLN +videos, 2 chapters KLN.
Now thinking of reviewing/annotating something else before I hit the bed...

Yeah questions take long. If I read then I dont get time for too many questions. Basically this month I've been trying to review as much as I can. So far I've only been able to do about 350 questions.

Don't leave the NBME for too late, where you don't have enough time to work on your weak areas.

I'm behind as well, realized that I didn't know my Neuro as well as I thought I did so I'm trying to finish that whole section in Kaplan Qbank.
Sunday-Friday: Pharm- yes I plan to spend alot of time since it my weak area.
Sat- Monday: Micro
Tuesday: Cardiology Physio
Then spend Wednesday-Saturday on Questions take NBME 7/11 that Sunday.

I know check to see where hope2pass is in the process everytime I wake up! Since it motivates to start my day early! And try to finish as much as I can before I head to bed.

@islandcrazy: You are absolutely right. I shouldn't leave the NBME for later and to be honest, I am a little nervous to take it because I want to do good in it. I need the confidence and motivation after getting a good score on the NBME. Your schedule sounds good. According to your plan, it looks like you're planning on taking your NBME in 2 weeks from now (around May 12th) ... is that correct ?

@5hstar: Not sure if this was directed for islandcrazy or me but here you go...I used kaplan videos and notes for neuroanatomy. not gonna use hy since i dont want to spend anymore time on neuro...gonna do questions and move on from it. For biochem, I am using FA as well and some concepts from kaplan notes. I have UW notes as I did UW a while ago..so just gonna look over those notes and mainly focus on Kaplan Qbank questions. Gonna try doing mixed timed blocks after I start DIT...hopefully in a week or so.

@aj23 & @sukar: haha thanks guys, its a good motivation to write the updates on here to get positive feedback! I guess we all motivate each other in one way or the other aj23 - how much UW do you have left? and when is your exam?


Now here is an update:

-I took yesterday (Saturday) off completely and went out n hung out with some friends. I got no work done yesterday so I am still in the same spot as I was on Friday night. I thought I'd take a regret free day off from studying and start fresh this week! So basically, from today (Sunday) to next Sunday ...1 week, I am going to finish biochem from FA, micro from Kaplan notes, and do 10 blocks of questions. Then ready or not, NBME's here I come !!

@5hStar: Also not sure who you directed your question at... but I did HY neuroscience book and today I will be doing Goljan CNS audio lectures and Pathoma. I'm doing the Kaplan Qbank subject wise because I really need to focus on some of my weak areas before I hit random, timed in UW which will be after my second NBME.

@Hope2Pass: Yup planning on taking a second NBME in two week. I took a first NBME in the first week of April because I needed to really understand my weak areas. It was basically a shock to the system but I'm happy I did it because I realised that I was lacking a lot of knowledge in some areas that I thought I knew. Gonna focus on Neuro, Pharm and Micro. Hopefully I can increase my NBME score.

dr. Hanson's KLN book is the best biochem review book nowadays.
Its pretty good, I used it.
+ I did lange flashcards, they are also ok, but not as good as KLN

A little worried about meeting my goal of a passing score before starting UW...

Anyways I finish Neuro over the weekend, neuro has been really hard for me because its requires a lot of critical thinking also many of the symptoms are so close together for instance I keep missing up the demyelinations, still trying to find a good resource for it. (Anybody have any ideas?)

Moving on to Pharmacology, I'm doing the KLN for CNS Pharm along with Lange Cards and FA today. Hopefully I can finish those videos, memorize some of the key points and look over a few of the psychiatric illness that have been giving me difficulities. Plus do some KQbank questions.

@docmfn: dont worry, its takes me almost a day for doing a block in uw.
But ones you almost 50% done with it, u will feel much better, and the time u spend doing ur block is never a waste. just keep moving...u will smile later on

She (Hansen) is the best Biochem teacher from the opinion of Goljan (he refers to her many times in his lectures). I saw her live in Chicago and loved her lectures. yes, if you open KLN biochem - she is the author of this book.

I'm almost done the Kaplan Videos for CNS Pharm and while I'm understand I'm pretty sure I won't be able to answer those questions because by the time I get to the next video I can't remember anything from the first video. So I decided to forgo the videos- note this isn't my first time watching them. I'm gonna spend the next few hours on banking GT CNS pharm cards, along with Lange.

@ParaMD- I used the Conrad Fischer Medical Ethics, the 100 cases are golden as I haven't encounter many different scenerios.

Was supposed to finish it and do path endo but too sick to do it today

ParaMD- Islandcrazy is right. 100 Cases by Conrad Fischer is what I did and Hope2Pass used (I rmr seeing it in this thread before) as well. I don't think I have heard of another book that can beat this.. The book is simple and easy.. It takes max 2 full days to read and do the questions.

My sleeping hasn't changed at all but I've random days where I wake up early...I'll try to wake up and start my day early as well! I found it more productive during the day.

I am stil waiting for the ecfmg to process my new application and a payment that I made a couple weeks ago.

I am thinking - end of may, mid june.

What do u use for micro?

I am using Kaplan Lecture Notes since I have my notes in there as well.
