Smile Elizabethjohn23 Step 1 experience (253)

Hi everyone,

I have been a silent observer of this forum for months and now that I am finally done with my step 1 I wanted to share my experience hoping it would of help to someone.

I took my exam on march 28th, got my score last week - 253.

My preparation time is around 8 months. I first did all the Kaplan videos and Kaplan Lecture Notes. I made notes of all the extra points from the videos in the text. I revised the Kaplan notes two more times after my first read. I cant emphasize enough the importance of having a strong base. If you do your Kaplan lectures thoroughly most of your work is already done.
I started Uworld during my 2nd read and I covered around only about 60% of the questions. I used to panic when I saw posts of high scorers who did both uworld and kaplan qbanks, so for those of you like me to didnt get to finish u world , dont worry if u know your basics well, doing 60-70% of the questions is enough.

I also did Goljan pathology audios along with the rapid review pathology which I found very very useful, but it was highly time consuming, so for all the test takers running short of time, try to at least do the general patho from goljan.

I did not do first aid , I just stuck to my Kaplan notes. I wanted to do first aid but kept pushing it back and eventually ran out of time.

I did NBME 13 -226 ( 2 weeks before the exam ) and NBME 12 -242 ( 3 days before the exam )

The day before the exam I was totally stressed out and panicky, I took an alprax before i went to sleep but in spite of that I couldn't sleep. But I was able to maintain my calm during the exam. I would advise taking plenty of breaks, eat snacks and keep yourself well hydrated which is very important.

Pray and study hard !!!

I hope this helps someone.

All the best!

Congrats on an awesome score! Elizabeth! and best of luck for the other steps
I was just wondering how many hours you put in on a daily basis and what was your study pattern like for those 8 months you mentioned. Your feedback would be helpful Thanks a ton Dr

my study schedules were highly erratic when i started studying, somedays i would study for 8-9 hours, other days for maybe just an hour or two . towards the last 2 month i was more consistent and would spend around 6-8 hours / day i guess .
i tried making schedules alloting specific times to each subject but i could never stick to them . for my first read i would jus skim through the text and listen to the videos. i took a long time to complete the first read, probably around 3 weeks per subject for the physio, patho, pharm, anatomy, biochem and around 2 wks for micro and BS . After that the second revision went much faster less than a week for most subjects. and by the third read i knew most of the topics well , i took jus 1-3 days for each subject. i did Goljan after my 2nd read and i must say i took a very long time to do goljan and rapid review around 3 weeks, which was way longer than what i anticipated but at the end i very confident abt my patho .
If there is one thing i would recommend , it is do ethics and phyisician -patient relationship topics from some source other than kaplan . i did those topics thorougly from kaplan but i was still not able to confidently answere the questions from those topics.
Immuno and biochem and most other subjects kaplan along with uworld is more than enough.
hope this helps

MY only question is how you was able to remember all that info, i am not good at cramming stuff .

how did you revise goljan ?

or for instance micro and anatomy from kaplan these are my biggest worries as rest i believe can drink up

i did not revise goljan, i had prepared patho from kaplan as well so they were both mutually reinforcing . anatomy stick to the basic concepts , theres no need to cram, most of imp stuff for anatomy are what we already know all along . micro and pharm were a lil tricky for me, i used to keep referring back to them .

Default Congratulations!

Thank you for your post and all the encouraging words.

Just wanted to know how much time did it take for you to finish the first read. I am on my first read and it seems like I am taking almost a month to finish a subject (Kaplan notes with videos). Biochem and Anatomy sure did take a lot of time. I actually left Neuroanatomy because I was nervous as I had to read six more subjects and it was taking a lot of time.

Should I be increasing my speed? I am afraid that I would not be able to grasp things very well if I do so. But on the other hand, I do need to repeat as much as I can(i.e. do as many reads as I can) before the actual exam. I do read 8-10 hours on a good day. I am in quite a dilemma. Please help!

I started from January and am planning to take my step 1 in late September.
