Planning Advice on the Remaining Weeks of Prep

Hi, friends!

I need your advice. My extended eligibility period ends in June. I need to schedule my exam date this week bec. the slots are starting to fill out.

This is roughly what I've done so far:
- KLN 1st read
- UW
- KLN 2nd read (worked on weak areas)
- NBME form 5 online (228)
- FA + UW notes (worked on weak areas)

I'll do an nbme again this 1st week of May. Then, DIT + UW 2nd pass.

My remaining plan:
- DIT + UW 2nd pass for 3 weeks -- NBME weekly
- Final review for 2 weeks -- UWSA weekly

Now my dilemma is, I still have Kaplan Qbank (1,500 mcqs left). I don't know where to fit it in. It's my 2nd qbank and I'm doing it in random, timed mode. I plan to use it to detect "weak topics". I know it's absolutely necessary for physio (up and down arrows). It's also great for other subjects (i.e. biochem, microbial genetics, and renal formulas).

I also have usmle consult qbank that I'm thinking to use only for subjects like behavioral sciences, genetics, biochem, and anatomy (i.e. for CT scans).

I'm thinking of an exam date on June 15 if it's only DIT + UW 2nd pass and final review. But since I still have kaplan qbank and selected usmle consult subjects that I want to try, maybe I should add 1-2 weeks more??

Also, where do I place working on the qbanks? Before DIT + UW 2nd pass OR after?

DIT recommends to take the exam 10 days after their program that's why I'm hesitating to add 2 weeks of qbanks after DIT, in addition to the 2 weeks final review.

Or maybe I shouldn't do kaplan qbank and usmle consult? And stick to DIT + UW 2nd pass + final review instead?

What do you guys think?

Thank you!!

228 on your NBME sounds good

I didn't know he recommends to take the exam 10 days after the exam... Now I am rethinking about when I should do DIT..

Yep! I think I read it in his website or on one of his study guide pdfs. I think it depends on what you're using DIT for (i.e. go through FA for the first time, breaking through a plateau, etc). I'm using it as a final high-yield run-through.

I'm thinking if I put too much space in-between DIT and my exam, it will take me more time and effort to review DIT or FA all over again. And as I'm finding out right now, reading just FA on my own is terribly boring! I'm watching TV with it. LOL! It's a bit counterproductive. I can't throw in mcqs bec. I'm running behind sked.

Haha tell me abt it..
I keep watching shows while annotating FA. I guess its a good thing Im annotating them right now because that way im reading FA. And it should be a lil easier when I run through it again.
We all fall back in schedule.. U will be able to catch up soon. I am behind by 2/3 days.. I hate being sick! Stupid weather! I didn't even do half of what was on my schedule!

Annotating FA is the way to go, bud! You're on the right track. All step experiences I've read who had a 255++ annotated FA. I'll do it if I have more time and if I'm more diligent, but I only have a few weeks left. In the last 2 weeks before my exam, I think I'll just run through every book at 1-2 days per subject. Sigh!! That's my punishment for not transferring all the stuff to FA.

I used to get sick too. It coincided with when I was about to study for step 1 and when I was about to start UW. I think the stress gets to us somehow.

About the sked, I'm supposed to have my next nbme on May 6 and have drinks after with my friend. But then my friend moved our night-out to May 3!! Now, I'm late for my sked AND my nbme date just got earlier! My nbmes just really need to coincide with night-outs or else I'm not taking them. LOL!

I just ran out of episodes to download in the new TV series I'm watching. Looks like it's back to studying for me.

i would say a block a day and push on weekend ,try if you can save some time along DIT , to go through your mistakes in last week.

Well u already read kaplan twice so when you try to do it again it should go really fast. Considering that u read micro in 2 days? I am really slow reader so after annotating my FA i will be opening kaplan IF and ONLY IF I am unsure of somfn and need to look back or else FA is my bible!
Nbme + night out drink sounds great!
I should problie plan to do Nbme soon and go out plans too!

A block of random Kaplan qbank per day on top of DIT + UW (2nd pass)... Hmmmm... It takes me 1 hour to go through a block and 2-3 hours or more IF I'm going to religiously take down kaplan qbank notes into FA.

It will be easier if I don't take notes or maybe I should put qbank into high-yield mode only... What do you think?

It will be tough, but I'll try if I can squeeze in 1 block of kaplan qbank per day. Thanks!!

To save your 2-3 hours try to use print and paste that instead of writing it down, and since you already done with Kaplan and will be using it ,there should not be that many notes

About the high yield plan,I would say you keep that for last week, in case you found yourself lagging behind.

Hahaha... True... I should use copy and paste instead.

That leaves me 1 hour per block and 30 mins to 1 hour to review the block. I think i can spare 2 hours per day for kaplan qbank...

And yep, you're right, I should go over my mistakes/weak areas during the weekend.

Again, thanks! You're a big help!

Hey buddy,

just an idea -

since you're done UW one time through, don't do it again with DIT. Do the 2nd pass in the final 2 weeks of review that you have planned out. That way UW will be fresh and go all the way till the day before your exam....and 2 weeks or so is enough to go through it since you've done it before - no note taking, go over only the questions you get wrong or the ones you mark. (3 blocks a day .. 2 weeks ... covers about 2000 questions!)

And while you do DIT, you should use Kaplan Qbank since you have a lot of it left and make sure to review all the questions .. high yield, low yield, correct, wrong ..everything! DIT lectures alone will take about 7-8 hours along with work book .. since the lectures are around 5 hours and the quizzes etc take some time in the work book. Then if you want you can do a block of Qbank after that since your speed is amazingly fast and you should be able to do a block and review it fairly quick.

Oh and while doing DIT you can also see how much it helps you improve as you do new questions from the Qbank ... hopefully your scores increase steadily and that will build up confidence for your post-DIT NBME! (if you focus mainly on UW 2nd pass, it wouldn't be an accurate marker of how much DIT helped).

And I think your plan sounds good other than that.

Hope that helped!

When are you planning on starting DIT? I don't think I am starting on May 1st since I still have stuff left to do in my study plan.

I think the same way ... as Hope2Pass.... Leave the UW notes at the end... use kapan Qbank for DIT... those are new Q... will test you in a different way... dont write notes... to go faster.

I agree to it too, but still will Suggest writing notes of mistakes atleast ,otherwise it beats the whole purpose of it, in my opinion .

Lots of Qbanks, lots of stuff to study! I got lost after a couple of lines!

I guess the only modest advice i can give you, is what the elders in my school have told me:
SAVE THE HIGHEST YIELD FOR LAST

So i guess hope2pass is definitely right about his suggestion, do the kaplan qbank before UW, so that the UW will be more closer to the exam.
And regarding DIT, as close as possible to the exam will reap the most results.
and dont forget about that final revision after DIT and before the exam

Dont worry, you seem in top shape man!

Good luck!

Hi, Hope2Pass!

Thank you very much for your very informative post!

I have restructured my plan as to put UW 2nd pass nearer my exam. I have yet to decide on the details of the new plan... When I finally formulate it, the real stress begins! LOL!

About your question... My DIT date just moved from May 5 to around May 12. During this 1-week gap, I'll do all the last remaining stuff I need to do for my weak areas and other things I left behind/ignored before I go to DIT. This is so that when I enter that final 5-week phase, I won't feel the need for any major overhaul in a subject and I can also focus on the high-yield stuff. When you start DIT, I'll join you in a few days.

LOL! Yep, bud, I felt lost too with all the qbanks/materials. I really have to streamline my plan and drop all the low yield books/stuff in my list to read/review. So far, I'm finding it a bit hard to let go and "triage" study materials. Hahaha...

Thank you very much for your advice! That will be my motto in the weeks before my exam! High yield, high yield, high yield.

Good luck to us, bud! I do hope DIT pays off!

Thank you very much, bud!! It has been quite a while since I've heard from you. I guess we were all busy lately. LOL! I'll keep what you've said in mind when I start deciding on my prep.

Sounds good. Good luck buddy!!
