Skin Malignant Melanoma Diagnosis & Markers

A 55 year man was diagnosed with nodular melanoma, a form of malignant melanoma. The tumor has a diameter of 45mm depth, but he does not yet know the thickness. The doctor said he was between a "level II and level IV", and that he has a 36% cure rate if it was caught in the early stages. The man had a pet scan 2 days ago but the report has not yet been read. He is extremely anxious and depressed because of the waiting about the result. Which of the following predictor(s) could be the positive marker to standarize the diagnosis?

A) S-100, P53, HMB-55
B) S-100, Melan-B, HMB-35
C) Melan-A1, S-100, HMB-45
D) S-100, Melan-A, HMB-65
E) HMB-45, Melan-A, S-100

WTF question.

whats HMB 35/ 45 /55/ 65 and Melan-A/ B/ A1 ???
I'm confused between A, B, C, D, E

But if I had to go with one I'd go with A) because it has P53 in it .. lol

This is a type of question you can see in the exam, remember they test your KNOWLEDGE. You can know 2 or 1 part in the question but the last is for your knowledge about melanoma. Your answer is wrong.

All those markers are in KPLN Qbank explanation except the melan, when you read try to anderstand all concept not the good answer you got. When I failed in my 1st attemp in the exam I see things, markers, question, translocation, I never be seen in books, video, UW(e.g. mech action you cannot use clopidrogel + aspirin, diagnosis of S3 + S4 together in a patient), so when you read something in your Qbank the 1st thing you have to do: ask yourself WHY? Don't blame the new concept you never see!!!!!!!!

The answer (E) HMB-45, Melan-A, S-100

- HMB-45: is a monoclonal antibody that reacts against an antigen present in melanocytic tumors such as melanomas, and stands for Human Melanoma Black. It is used in anatomic pathology as a marker for such tumors. Reference Kaplan Qbank & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMB-45

- S-100: Marker for Melanoma, Neural tumors, and Astrocyma. The majority of the forum this maker. Reference FA and Kaplan

- Melan-A: Primary melanomas can lose expression of melanoma specific antigens, with the absence of HMB-45 in the majority of desmoplastic melanomas a prime exam http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12481009
