Greece Some questions regarding the USMLE

Hi fellow coleagues I am a new member here that found out about USMLE through a very unfortunate event (atm I am being treated for myocarditis). Drama aside though I have a couple of question regarding the first steps.

First and foremost when does one sit each step? I am a first year in the medical school of athens and I have no medical skills whatsoever. The first two semesters (i.e the first year, each year is divided into 2 semesters of 6 months) contain very generic subjects such as biostatistics, physics, chemistry and biology . Do not get me wrong I dont regard these subjects as useless I just view them as fundamentals for the years to come. That being said the second and the third year (the third one being the final pre clinic year) consist of subjects of high medical value

Finally how does one prepare for the examination? Are the sample tests on the internet enough or will i have to buy preparation books when I decide to sit the exam?
Thanks for taking the time to read and answer me

Since you are a first year medical student, let us start from the basics. Step 1 consists of subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and behavioral sciences. so the earliest you can take step 1 is when u FINISH these subjects in your medical school. step 2 is divided into 2 parts...step 2 clinical knowledge (CK) and step 2 clinical skills. Step 2 CK consists of clinical subjects like Internal medicine, general surgery, radiology, anaesthesiology, obstetrics, gynaecology, psychiatry and paediatrics. So accordingly you cannot appear for step 2 CK unless you FINISH these subjects in your medical school.
coming to preparation..the books required for step 1 are kaplan notes of all subjects and also kaplan video lectures of all step 1 subjects. For pathology you need Goljan audio lectures and Goljan rapid review pathology book. for microbiology you may additionally need "Clinical microbiology made ridiculously simple". you also need First aid for USMLE step 1 latest edition. you wll have to buy the books. additionally you will have to enroll for practice mock tests like NBME's and USMLE WORLD.
Hope this helps.
