Idea! Share your tricks on how to keep going

As an IMG sometimes we lose focus as we prepare for this exam, you find yourself off your books for a long time days to weeks. Sometimes we lose concentration while we read, other times we read but the material seems not to be making sense. can people share their ideas on how to help us, all suggestions will be very helpful.
for me i take coffee with concentrated milk to keep focused. i also write a weekly task.

This is what I do:

1. Take a break every hour, play with my dog. I try to keep it to 5min but it is always a longer break.
2. Sleep 3 times a day. Yes I do that. 1 hr, 1 hr during day and at least 5 hrs at night.
3. Watch an episode of my favorite TV series everyday.
4. Shut off my brain and Chill on Saturdays.. I don't take the whole weekend off but Saturday evenings are mine .
5. NEVER miss my exercise schedule. The improved circulation does wonders for the brain.

Whenever I start losing it..I do this,
I study at-least something , some concept before going to sleep,
And next day..I feel unexplainable +ve thoughts about this whole usmle thing and keeps me going...and of course,
Coffees are must..

I know exactly what you mean...we've all been thru the emotions of this thing called step 1....one day your feeling like, Im gonna beat the hell out of the **** and the next day your thinking man, I don't know ANYTHING....you keep reading scores of people doing well and people not doing we'll...and you keep thinking this could be me or that could be me....i mean lets be honest here not one of us is smarter then another...we all have the same brain capacity but some people retain things easier then others

I know thats the case for me, I'm a slow learner....but when i put my mind to something i HAVE to get it done, no exceptions

You just have to keep thinking that you are not the only one doing this....many have come before us and many will come after us....just do your part...

I don't care where you went to med school, this stuff is HARD and not everyone can do it...completing med school in itself is a feat to be proud of...

Usmle is tough as hell but just think....the wealth of knowledge we have cannot be taken from us....with or without a great score...just keep plugging away and doing your part

and oh yea redbulls>>>>>>>

i heard of a recent research that compared two sets of students just b4 an exam.the first set was given something to study the night b4 the exam, the second set the morning b4 the exam,it was noted that the night set performed significantly better than the morning set, this is because the brain takes up what we read works on it and convert it to long term memory while we sleep,so i agree.
i would thus recommend u revise all u read for the day and you plan for the next day just b4 you sleep.
please help us we need the experience of all who have taken the exam.

When the going gets tough... the toughs get going.
Get a good rest and make a journal of progress.
take 10 minutes break after a 25 minute study which allows to soak more

hi everyone, even i believe its tough to remain focused for long but these few things that i try it might help others.

1)Take good rest.6-8 hrs
2)Eat healthy food with regular intervals.
3)if possible daily exercise( i do yoga) only meditation part for 15 mins daily in morning it helps to concentrate for long time.
4) I take my studies as job (which i have to do for 6 months) i go to library at 9 and come back by 9 (as studying with others motivate you, with a belief if they can do even ican do) from monday to saturday. sundays off and i do whatever i feel like just to relax.

5)Last and i think most important just before going to sleep i close my eyes and pray to myself (not to god, sorry but i am atheist) whatever i want to do in my life..... like for now i simply pray i am putting all my hard work,so definitely i will get good result just i need to keep faith in myself and i love studying (though i don't) and believe continuous practice of this for a month or so and you won't even realize everything will register in your subconscious mind and you would follow it with ease believe me.

hi... great thread everyone.. ..
well, i'm just an average student... never got any firsts or medals, so i wanna score real good in this one so that i can make my parents proud... not that they aren't now but it just seems a nice thing to do and i really want to give them that... for all the love they have, for everything .. when we really think about all that they do for us.. all the troubles and sacrifices... studying 15 hrs a day doesn't seem a hard thing...
and the best part is .... the only requirement to do good in this exam is dedication and hardwork... nothing that we cant do ...... so keep going .. all the best..

Spending time with your dog is a real stress buster and exercise does wonders to your brain.

I cannot stress enough on how good this forum is in keeping one going. Just coming here and talking to people going through the same things as you are really helps me motivated. And when I see one of the members of this forum getting a great score, you cannot imagine how big a boost that gives me!
