Planning Progress thread - (DIT + UW)

I'm getting burnt out and my productivity has been decreasing gradually lately.
Not to mention that I now have less time for studying, since my hospital has decided that social service-interns should be under more strict rules regarding work-hours!

So I thought maybe a thread documenting my progress would give me a boost.

My current status:
-I finished my "basic foundation" read a very long time ago and didnt go back to it since.
-I then went over FA a couple of times while doing UW.
-Took an NBME and scored 165.
-Went through FA again, but this time along with DIT.
-Took an NBME and scored 205.

Noticing that DIT substantially increased my score, i decided that instead of reviewing FA by myself, i would do it along with DIT. In addition to the usual UW questions in the morning.

So the plan is:
To complete the DIT course in the recommended 3 weeks (21 days), along with a daily block of UW questions.
Evethough it seems like too much (especially with the hospital and everything), both DIT and UW will be second pass for me, so i think it's doable.

When do you plan to take your exam?
Good luck with your Prep.
How much time did you take to cover DIT the first time? Was it exclusively DIT or with other resources?
I intend to do DIT but only in later part of my prep and I want to get an idea how long before my step I should start it so that I can still have some time to revise before the D day. I plan to take my exam in late Aug/ early Sep.
Thanks.

Done with lecture 1 of day 1.

That was fast! My first time doing DIT, this lecture took most of the day!
Damn pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics was so confusing at first, but going through it now i felt it was really simple.

I still feel energized so i think im gonna go for the second lecture right away

Day 1 lecture 2, we have lift off

Thanks.
The first time it took me a little more than 4 weeks to do it.

The plan (during my first time) was to do (DIT+FA) with a daily block of UW questions.
However, DIT is a bit exhausting and I didnt have alot of time left at the end of the day to do any questions. So i just concentrated on doing DIT and reviewing FA during those 4-5 weeks.

DIT is definitely a late-prep tool.
Dr. Jenkins (the DIT guy) recommends that you do it during the month of your exam.
He also recommends going through first aid really quick by yourself after finishing his course (and just before taking the exam) just to consolidate everything.

Ok. I get that doing DIT towards the end is best. But, how about doing it multiple times? Perhaps, doing it once right after a first read, just to see how everything is in FA and what info is higher yield.

I'm thinking and wanting to do this, but many people vote against it and I wonder why.

Anyways, best of luck on the prep. I'm also gearing my engines for Sept. Haven't touched a single qbank, however.

The best advice is to do exactly as he says, it's an active process of learning so dont passively watch them like kaplan videos or whatever.

The notebook is essential so dont leave that out.

Also, do them thoroughly to get the most out of them. I've been seeing alot of people lately just speeding through them, which i dont think helps alot.
Watch a few DIT "days" then review the material he covered, by yourself from FA. Repeat the process till your done with the 15 "days"

They are a bit time-consuming, so if you cant do any questions in the beginning dont worry about it.

Awesome bro, you can use this thread also if you want.
My strategy's pretty much the same. All depends on my next NBME.

Good luck

Actually, I thought about that a while back. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but i think it would be too tough and time consuming and not as productive.

The thing is, his strategy is aimed at semi-ready students who are near the finish line and just need that final push. Students that have went through FA a couple of times, students that are almost half way through a question bank (if not finished one all together).

So i think it would be better not to rush the process. Get a solid foundation, get your concepts cleared, familiarize yourself with FA, and in the end DIT will just cement everything.

Good luck to you as well!

Ok, i just came back from the hospital. Finished lecture 2 from day 1 last night. Going to start with lecture 3 day 1

On a side note; the filled up notebook never crossed my mind before starting my second time. Good thing i did the first time with a pencil and not a pen!

Watching and pencil-erasing day 1 lecture 3

Huh? I don't understand, you're erasing your notes?

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll leave DIT for the end then. Thanks a lot.

Finished day 1 all together, scanned it really quick.

Going to get a bite to eat and start day 2.

Day 2 is gram +ve bacteria, and immunology.
I think i got those down so hopefully this will be an easy DIT "day". Who knows, i might be able to catch a few drinks with the guys

lesson of the day, dont get cocky when it comes to micro.

Just finished day 2 lecture 1, took me a little less than 4 hours.

I barely have enough time to go through lecture 2 and 3 before going to sleep, so no drinks for me. The guys are probably passed out by now anyway.

On to lecture 2, immunology is my bitch.

Back from the hospital. A new day, wonder how much i'll get done.

Finished lecture 2 from day 2 last night, but i feel asleep before starting lecture 3.
So going to start with lecture 3 now, and then scan all of day 2.

Once again, immuno is my bitch

I finished day 2 completely, revised it also. Micro gram positive took a while, so did immuno. I definitely have them down cold though.

Going to get a bite to eat, then i dont what i'll do.
Either start with day 3, or do a block of UW.

On a side note: while studying, i look out the window and i see a ton of my country's celebrities are under my house. I go outside and it turns out my neighborhood has become a studio for the day.

Everyone was like "you just found out?!"
They've been shooting since yesterday.
That's step 1, completely isolated.

Alright, back from work.

Finished day 2 with a quick review yesterday, and did a block of UW.
Ended up going out for a little, didn't have that much fun but it's still a break.

Now, off to day 3.

Lecture 1, begin!

just finished lecture 1 of day 3, behavioral.

I was shocked when i saw the last post saying i just started it, was 8 hours ago!

My productivity is just really slow, im just not in the mood anymore and dont have the same fire i did last month.

gonna go out and catch a movie or something, i think men in black is out.

the whole day on a lecture, mother must be proud.

Hopefully tomorrow (or in the near future) the fire will burn again inside me

Ok, spent the rest of my day and night yesterday outside having fun. I pretty much saw as many people as i could. So i think im refreshed. Only one way to find out.

Back from the hospital, going to do day 3, then do a quick scan of all three days again (repetition is key for me), then do a block of UW!

I have almost 10 hours before my energy starts to ware off, so in 10 hours i have:
-day 3; lecture 2&3
-scan of days 1,2,3
-UW block

Let's see if yesterday's break worked

That's awesome bro, keep at it.
You're going to do great. Don't let that fire burn out.

Btw, you think DIT second pass will give us the "jump" it gave us the first time?

Hahaha like i said, you sell yourself short.
You're gonna jump much more than that. After your next NBME i'll tell you "i told you so". You'll see.

Don't forget, UW second pass has to be boosting us up a bit also.

yea i actually think UW 2nd pass will be more likely to get my score up then DIT 2nd pass, if those UW concepts prove to be high-yield and show up on the nbme/step1.
i duno, im kinda hoping for the worst tbh.
as long as my score doesnt decrease from the last nbme, ill be fine lol

Finished off day 3.

Quickly eviewed the three DIT days. I think i know them like the back of my hand now.

I usually sleep a couple of hours later than now, but im really tired. So i guess no UW for me.

It's a good start back to recovery.
Hopefully tomorrow the fire will continue to grow.

good night

I did it once before and am doing it now second pass. I think most people do it once.

The reason I'm doing it a second time, is that I need to go through FA another time and I'm too lazy to go through it by myself. DIT helps me stick to a plan, without getting bored. It's quite motivational.

In general, the rules of the thumb when it comes to DIT (in my personal opinion):
-Do it in the end, finishing it not more than a month before your exam.
-Do a pre-DIT NBME, and a post-DIT NBME.
-You should be done with your primary reading (kaplans), FA (two times), and a substantial amount of UW -before starting DIT.
-Constant review of whatever you have watched (a quick scan of what you covered during the day, and a thorough review every few "DIT Days").
-Don't speed through the videos and don't leave out the notebook. So basically just dont rush the process.

A new day, a new beginning.

I feel like doing some questions, going to start the day with a block of UW.

After the block, will have lunch. Then start with DIT Day 4.

Alright, got excited and finished 2 blocks instead of one (2 blocks in 6 hours! including lunch )

Don't know if i can still do all of day 4. They're easy topics but long videos.

Anyway, starting with day 4 lecture 1 ----> psych
then day 4 lecture 2 ----> psych

day 4 lecture 3 ----> random sh!t

Finished day 4 lecture 1 and lecture 2, thereby finishing psych.
Like i said lectures were easy but long.

Total of friday:
Finished 2 blocks of questions, and two lectures (it's a weekend so i didnt go to the hospital).
Pretty good, i think im on the right track.
The fire is certainly coming back slowly.

P.S. Note for 2morrow:
Saturday is also a day off, so tomrrow's goal:
-2 lectures
-2 blocks

If you finish these, then on Sunday you can take the night off and go out.
So for the sake of a fun-night out on sunday, try to finish these tomorrow!

Keep it up! Good to see someone keeping up with their schedule!

A new day, a beautiful morning.
I love how coffee tastes better when in the morning breeze.

Ok, im glad i wrote that little memo from last night.
The plans my buds have set up for tomorrow night are awesome, and i really feel like having a little fun so that i can de-stress a bit.

However, if im going to go out tomorrow i HAVE to finish 2 blocks and 2 lectures today!

I think im gonna mix it up a bit. A lecture, then a block, then a lecture, and then finally a block.

Let's begin ----> first lecture!

Hey guys... How are you??? It looks like you are doing great... Sincerely, my best wishes to you all

I'm taking step 1 on July/31, and as a future DIT partner, I would like to ask you guys something:

How much time should I reserve after finishing DIT to review notes and FA for the last time before taking the exam??? What is the recommended amount of time??? is it 10 days? Is it using two weeks after finishing DIT too much time in between??

Thank you guys...

In general, the closer DIT is to your exam the better.
Don't know how much it'll take you to finish FA and UW notes, that's variable from one person to another.

However, if you plan to use it as the most final and last step in your prep, then make sure you have at least a week after finishing DIT for reviewing FA and UW notes by yourself.

Your post-DIT NBME will decide everything for you, so dont worry about planning too much for now. Just study like hell and stick to DIT religiously.

Just to clear this out in my head! Always get mixed up with these.

I'm going to mentally group these disease in one category so i can remember them.

-treatment: dantrolene

2- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome:
-Rigidity (excessive muscle contraction) &
hyperpyrexia, myoglobinurea, renal failure, autonomic instability
-caused by typical neuroleptics
-treatment: dantrolene, dopamine agonist (bromocriptine).

3- Seretonin syndrome:
-Myoclonus &
hyperthermia, convulsions, CV collapse, flushing, diarrhea
-caused by: SSRI's given with (another SSRI or SNRI or MAO-I or Tryptophan).
-Treatment: Cooling and benzos. Then cyproheptadine

4- HTN crisis:
-excess catecholamine symptoms (pheocromocytoma-like symptoms)
-caused by MAO-I given with (Tyramine or B-agonists)

Done with review of day 4!
Psych can trick you sometimes, so be careful.
I know it's pretty easy, but you can get mixed up sometimes
Its a bit tricky, bcoz of the little details here and there (all of which are important to know!).

Now off to that block of questions!

I have incredible super-human powers. Yesterday i was able to finish 2 blocks and two lectures haha

Even though my second block was 58% (what do i expect doing it at 12 am!), and i ended up sleeping at 5 am (i usually sleep at 1) -it was worth it.

Now all i have to do is go to the hospital, come back and review day 4, do a block of questions, and i'm done for the day.

Done with the quick review of day 4!

I think its safe to say that i've beat the first 4 "DIT days" to death haha
I've revised each day at least twice!

Now off to do a block of questions, hope i score in the 70's

after 4 days of dropping to the 60s in UW (and getting a bit worried), my last two days have been 80% and 86%!
i got 27 questions in a row correct today! and it wasnt even an easy block, average was 56%, i had to think on every question.

maybe i can do this afterall... lol

I'm glad you said that, you gave me a little boost. I've been dropping too lately.

I started out decently high with my second pass of UW, getting 70's in the 3 consecutive blocks.
But last night (12 am!) i got one in the 50's, and just now i finished a block and got one in the mid 60's.

Hopefully a few more days into DIT my scores will pick up again.

Ok so im done with a block of UW, score was in the 60's.
Tomorrow i'll get back to scoring in the 70's, that's a promise.

Now going to go through the explanations, have 2 hours to do so.

Since i completely annotated UW while doing it the first time, going through it second pass has become SOOOOOO much easier and more "fun". I just read and learn haha

After the explanations i'm done for the day.
Gonna get a haircut, take a shower, put a nice shirt on, and drink the night away!

I definitely need this break.

Back to my room, my desk, and my step 1 journey!
Spent a day and a half away from everything.
Tanning, relaxing and drinking.
I was scared i would get away too long from the "game" but i think a day and a half is the perfect amount of time. Not too much, not too little. Just enough to recharge your batteries.

Let's begin!
Last i remember, i finished off the first 4 DIT days, going to continue where i left off.
-----------------------------
Today's schedule:
Day 5 lecture 1, then a quick review

Day 5 lecture 2, then a quick review

Day 5 lecture 3, then a quick review

BEDTIME
