Arrow It's very bad but can be rectified

A failed attempt in USMLE is very bad and will make your friend less competitive than thousands of applicants.

However, it should not be stigmatizing.

The good news is that he/she can rectify the situation which is by getting over 90 in the second attempt and over 90 in the CK exam and passing the CS from the first attempt.

Also your friend can do research, observerships, externships, publications, volunteer work, and Step 3. All these will help dilute the effects of a failed Step 1 attempt.

Good luck to your friend

also just to add, i think u might wanna ask ur friend (and u urself) to study a little harder and understand concepts instead of memorizing key answers because as i hear from students who have recently taken the exam on this forum, the new format's real tough! i don't know what it is but they keep saying bout something where there are many grafts and figures instead of the usual 2 - 3 line questions (the questions are now 4 - 6 lines).

hope that helps. i was planning to read kaplan 3 times (once with the videos), but now i'm gonna read kaplan another 2 times and read a whole lot pathology (especially goljan) to make sure i have a full grasp on it. so whatever trick question they may ask, u should be prepared.
