Smile Exam= 28 days later! Study Schedule

LOL @ the other thread!
(it did become quite popular! )

Let's continue our discussion in this thread.

The dreaded, horrific (28 days later) and at the same time, the most anticipated month of June is just 4 days away!

----------------------------------------------------

My update:
- Finishing up DIT. It took me 3-4 weeks to do DIT (The last few weekends were busy though).
- In that time I also did 4 offline NBME's and only managed to do 8 blocks of questions!
- Plan is to finish 3.5 days of DIT left this week + 2 NBME's.

Where's everyone in their progress?

That's where I messed up.
I didn't review the NBME's yet. So the day after finishing up with DIT, I'm going to review all 4 NBME's (that's 800 questions!) But I just want to see which ones I got wrong and which ones I got right, so it'll be very quick. I guess it will also give me an idea of my weaknesses.

Once I finish reviewing the offline NBME's, I will take an online NBME. Not hoping for a big jump from pre-DIT NBME since I feel like I'm still missing something. Still need to review FA/ DIT Workbook before taking an NBME but we'll see how it goes. I'm probably going to take the NBME n then review everything.

hi buddy,
it was already mentioned on the usmle official website about the delay. coz they are making new changes to their Question pool.

why dont u de-stress your self by telling us ur exam experiance and advice us on things that worked best for u and things that u shouldnt have done during your prep

Default Exam experience

Ok, so I got to the prometric test center at 7.15 am. The doors were not open until8 am. I had a backpack full of water, protein bars , a sandwich, a coke and some candy. You have to register first, they check your ID make sure it has the same name you registered with otherwise you will have a problem with that.
They search your pockets and scan you with a metal detector. They also take your fingerprints and picture.
Then you go into the booth, type your CIN and the exam begins. I thought the exam was pretty doable if you had studied FA, goljan and done kaplan qbank.

I felt i did ok, but there were a LOT of molecular biology questions that I thought were out of this world. Gastro, cardio, pharmaco and microbiology were the main questions and I thought they were pretty fair. Lots of genetics too. Make sure to study molecular biology, ethics and biostatistics, because i know those were my weak points.
I only took 2 short 10 min breaks because the adrenaline rush was so high i just wanted to keep answering questions. The last 2 blocks get pretty tedious so i would recommend to take a 20 min break before the last 2 blocks. Do not panic. Relax and think. And bring earplugs so you wont get distracted with noises. I had a guy coughing every 30 seconds and i wanted to get up from my chair And smack him in the head hehe.
I hope this experience works for any of you. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Oh also I was lucky i didnt get many Neuroquestions so that was a plus for me i think. I'll let you know how the score went on july 11 (meh)

Here's an update -

- Pre-DIT NBME 5 online = 330/182
- DIT Completed = 4 weeks
- 3 offline NBME's 1,2,3 and scored consistently between 144-147 out of 200.
- Did 7 blocks of Kaplan Qbank with a 60% average on each block.
- Post-DIT NBME 12 online = 430/205
(I took the extended version and it said I got 50 wrong)

I went up by 23 points! I wasn't expecting too big of a jump but I had hoped to hit the 200 mark by now and that's exactly where I'm at. Now my next goal is to hit 220 before I go into my exam.

3 weeks to exam. Here's the plan-
-Week 1 = Kaplan Qbank (60% left, try to do 3-4 blocks per day) + Work on weak areas from Pathoma, DIT, FA, Goljan.
-Week 2 = Start DIT 2nd pass + Qbank (whatever left + 2nd pass, try to do 2-3 blocks per day)
-Week 3 = Finish DIT, Weak Areas, Forgettables, High yield points, CT/MRI Images, FA Rapid Review + 1/2 blocks per day

How's everyone else doing ?

Hey Hope2pass....

Am very early in my prep right now but wanted a perceptive and hence asking...

The questions that you miss on NBMEs is because of 'forgotten factoids' or 'conceptual correlations'?

Personally, I have traditionally heard ppl raving about USMLE is a conceptual exam but the more I study the more I realise it is about 'only mugging' at the end of the day.... am I mistaken? I have not started any qbanks yet but whatever random Q I do see is abt factoids. Even Physio... its not enough to understand the cardiac cycle... you have to end up mugging causes of canon waves?!

Will be glad to hear your opinion since you are well into your prep.

Thanks

In my opinion its more about the concepts. Once you have the concepts down you won't forget it and it will stick to you. For subjects such as Micro, Biochem enzymes, Immuno, Pharm etc .. there is obviously a lot of memorization involved too. Its a mix of both really but if there is something conceptual, try to get the concept down so that you know and understand the topic rather than just memorizing it.

In the NBME and questions for a lot of the questions, its the concepts that are required. But for some questions they throw in key words/clues and or associations and if you don't remember those "factoids" then you are in trouble lol

Good luck! I think you should take the NBME right now! I didn't review anything, just took the NBME the day after I finished with DIT. Now I will review stuff for a weak and then take another NBME to see how much I improve by. Ultimate goal is to be around 220-225 by June 23rd.

When i was doing UW first pass, i BARELY had enough time during the whole day for 2 blocks.
I could only do 2 blocks per day if i wasnt doing anything else.
If i had some reading to do during the day, i barely use to pass 1 block.

I read all the explanations and annotated extensively into my FA, after all that time "lost", i'm extremely thankful i did it!

In the end it'll all the time going into UW will be worth it, the review will be much easier.

Its good that you are annotating in your FA.

I am not making any notes. Just reading and reviewing all the answers (right and wrong). Takes me about 3-4 hours per block, sometimes faster! So to do more than 100 questions, I have to go at least 7-8 hours straight doing nothing but questions lol

Which NBME's answer keys do you need?
Just tell me the form numbers and I'll send those to you tonight.

I wont. I just dont have access to my own laptop right now. I'll send them when I get home tonight.

I'll send it to everyone else who requested as well. As for the source of the answer keys - not really sure, I didn't come up with these answers ... just downloaded forms with answers.

Update -

This week just working on questions and a few areas of weaknesses.
Yesterday I was able to do 2 blocks and MSK/SKIN from Goljan audios.

Today - Finished 1 lecture of Heme from goljan and working on questions all day now till I get bored.

I think I will try to incorporate as much Pathoma as I can into this week as well. Starting next week is 2nd round of DIT !!

Doing nothing but questions gets boring so quick!
I've been scoring between 60-70% in the Qbank now (doing only HY questions).

Did 100 questions yesterday and trying to do about 150 questions per day now! (time to step up the game )
I have about 600 more HY questions left so I'm thinking by Sunday I should be done these hopefully and then I will start DIT 2nd pass! I just hope my mark increases by a bit in the next NBME

Best of luck to everybody...this is what we've be working so hard for...Let's get it

I am back guys...have decided to cancel my exam after seeing my nbme 13 performance....still getting around 200 so i had no improvement in 15 days since nbme 12 which sucks severely....but what to do...this is the most important exam of my life, I'm not gonna take it until i know 100 % that i will be able to get above a 220...and considering this is my last month of eligibility have to pay the whole fees all over again but that i don't care about....bad score will stain me for life, money is nothing

..DIT kinda got very stagnant for me during the second run thru so decided to go to different sources....ordered pathoma today cause i checked it out over the last few weeks and i really liked it...he makes difficult things seem simple....hoping this can improve my score by 20/25 points in a month/month and a half....plan to take the exam end of july or early august now...sucks cause I've been working my ass off for awhile now just to see only a 200...guess i got to work even harder now.
