Smile Ritz Step 1 Experience

Hi everyone...Just thought of sharing my Step 1 experience...Hope it helps!

Score: 243

Prep time : 7 months, could have been shorter if i had been more dedicated.

Prep material: Kaplan, all videos once and read the books twice. In retrospect i think i should have gone to FA after the first read. Uworld, just once with an average of 67% (not so good...i know!) Read FA twice.

Assessment tests:
Uworld assessment 1 (2 months before exam): 236
NBME 12 (1 month before exam): 232
Uworld assessment 2 (1 week before exam): 258

The real test: I personally don't think any assessment can prepare you for the real thing...it is somewhat nerve wracking. I was extremely nervous in the first block but by the second block the nerves were gone. It is tiring but not impossible. Didn't take a break after the first block then took breaks after every block. Didn't keep track of time when out on breaks, just tried to be as fast as possible! I had about 5 mins of break time remaining in the end.
I didn't take much to eat. Juice, a sandwich and a pack of biscuits.

Post-test: I was totally confused, didn't have a clue about what score i would get. People would ask me how it went and all I could say was "I don't know!"
Turned out well in the end i guess. Time for Step 2 now...

Just want say GOOD LUCK...wish you all success!

A big THANKS to all who shared their experiences before me...it really helped a lot!!

Good score congrats!

I don't mean to be too critical, but do you think that the last month of your prep could have been better. NBME 12 one month out with 232 is good (and on the step it was a 11 point difference), but what did you do/wish you had done during that last month stretch. The reason I say this is bec I'm 1 month out and just took NBME 12 and received a 233 (made a lot of dumb errors). I'm aiming for a 250+ and this last month I plan on doing UWORLD 2nd pass (just finished it w 73%) and DIT only. Already went over FA once (not including the times I annotated UWORLD).

Let me know what you think.

Ritz,
Congrats on the score and taking the time to share the experience with us!
My question to you is why do you think you could've moved to FA after Kaplan? And how long did the second read take? Thanks!

Well, overall i thought that the stems were longer in the real exam...If you ask me, NBME correlates best with the exam.

All i did in the last month stretch was FA and revise my Uworld notes. I made lots of silly mistakes in my NBME and the real test too. All i can say is practice as much as possible to minimize silly mistakes. Hope you reach your goal of 250+
I also want to say that everyone is different...do what feels right to you.

5-8 hours. The main issue was that i had to take a 20 day break, and it took a while to get back on track. Its best to keep the momentum going...

Thanks first of all.
I think i just got bored of the Kaplan notes. FA has most of the high yield info, anything missing is mentioned in Uworld.

Congratulations on such a great score! In retrospect, what could have you done better? Also, what q banks did you use? Would you recommend doing a lot of them or just UW?

After taking the exam, would you say that the vast majority of questions came from FA and UW?
