Unhappy I don't know if I should continue (Step 1 score 193)

Hi everybody!!
I recieved my score yesterday,
Step 1: 193/76

I must recognized I didn't have too much hope after I took the exam because I felt it really hard, at some point I even couldn't assure if I have passed.

The preparation for this exam has been really hard. I am an IMG, already graduate 2 years ago. It took me 13 months when I was counting in no more than 10 months.
I had ups and downs, personal problems in between my preparation, for a couple of months I couldn't even touch the books but with some help of friends and family I could regained my focus.

I guess it was too late, I was confident, I knew that maybe I wasn't get a 99 but I though who is sure? So I went for it, my grades in the blocks were ok, but the exam was tougher.

So I though that if I didn't pass I would have to consider other options, but in this case I did pass but the grade is so low that I don't know if it is a good idea to continue. I still have ahead me step 2 ck, cs, and I was also planning to do 2 observership, but the time, money and all that still take to get the match is a lot and I with this low grade even if i do all that I feel that I still couldn't get match.

Now I am in my country becuase I have to go through a surgery on my knee that I posponed 2 months because of the exam. I have to make a decision while I begin my knee rehab.

So, please i will like some feedback from you.
I would like you to be the more honest possible with me and tell me if you think that I still have an opportunity to get a residency or what it will take me to get one.

Thanks,
Steph

I guess the silence and no replys about my doubt is a bad sign
I am still deciding, but I would really like that anyone
could share some experiencie and tell me if I could get a
residency with that grade, specially in Pediatrics or
Internal medicine.

Please be the most honest you can be,
Bye,
Steph

to be honest with you,i doubt if you can match with that score except with special God's intervention.
its actually low and even Imgs with 210 are not even called for interview except with high connections/ loads of recommendations/research works/solid observership.
nothing is impossible though but dont have high hopes
Goodluck buddy

Hi! I'm sorry I wasn't able to reply to you in FB about a step 2 book you were asking me months ago... I just remembered now.

I'll send you the 2011 Matching Stats from NRMP. Your score is within the range (vertical bar on page 9) that IMGs who match in psychiatry gets. There is still hope, in my opinion. Also, your step 1 score can get overshadowed by step 2 CK.

Actually my first option is Pediatrics and the 2nd is Internal Medicine
Family Medicine is not bad but I guess that even in that
specialty I couldn't be sure at all with my grade.

Nothing is impossible though, will it be tough? Of course. Doesn't mean its not impossible, have to do a lot of usce, score well on ck and pass step cs on 1st attempt...good luck man, keep fighting for it.

Default Keep fighting!!

I got passing scores is step 1 in February.
IŽm taking step 2ck in August.
And after crying and thinking I was going to give up I did some research and found out that I still have big chances!
DonŽt discourage yourself!!!
I met yesterday with a pediatrician from Mas General that helps picking the residents and she said that as long as I have passed the test scores are not as important as we tend to think! there are other things that count as well. She said that step 2 scores are more important and if u show improvement in step 2 compared to step 1 you are good to go.
Also at the APA this last May I met a lot of IMGs that are all ready residents and the program director of SUNY and I learned that observerships are not as helpful as getting into research. Find a research job work for in it for a year, youŽll make connections and get good recomendation letters. And they told me once more that my score in step 1 doesnŽt make it impossible for me to get into a good program.
After talking to the right people I got really motivated and IŽm not going to give up!
On the other hand if you like peds and internal medicine family medicine sounds like a good option.
Take a break, go have your surgery, regroup and get ready for step 2!

I really like to hear this, this is very motivated
and I hope you do really well in your step 2 ck
This has been really hard, I am bewteen accepting that my chances
in the states are over and take other oportunities or continue with it
but what I am clear is that my carreer has to continue and if my dream
is to become in a Pediatrician, I still can be a good one
And this has been really encouraged, so thank you

bye,
Steph

Default keep the faith

Well guys, here is the fact: you passed the hardest exam in the world. Passing this exam means you belong there. Your score is not the best, but a lot depends on other factors such as interview, publications, letters of recommendation. I can't tell you what to do with this score, but 10 years from now you should not ask yourself: "what if i tried"? Take care

Default .

Simply speaking the more programs you select, the higher the chance you get an interview. Furthermore if you had a high step 2 score, than you may compensate the step 1 189. Whatever you do, do not be depressed. Just stick to your plan, and give your best!!!

hello Steph , the good thing that you passed and you did it , i am always saying that yes it is great to have above average step 1 score , but the best thing is doing the exam and starting the usmle journey WHICH YOU DID
so congratulations !
wish your knee surgery will go on fine and the rehab will not take a lot of time

i am sure when you will start preparation for the CK exam , you will do better , you will know what to study and how to study and what to ficus on , and the best thing is you know how the real exam look like , you will do better if you focus more on mcqs

i know IMGs with high steps score who didnt match and some of my friends with lower scores matched , there are many factors besides the score in your CV could help like researches , observer-ship, hands on experience in the states , and do not forget you are a fresh graduate
good luck in everything

Unhappy 194/76 :(

I got my result last week.. It was 194/76 and I'm an Img who graduated in 2011. I couldn't believe why this happened to me. I felt so demoralized and dejected. I put in so much time, hope and faith in the exam along with all the dedication I could. All my friends have 99 double digits. I don't know about the future. Will any program even accept me or even consider letting me in? I started prep for CK but fear is consuming me...what if a repeat happens?

I'm an IMG (living in the US) and got my score today (189/75). I'm still in a shock and am confused whether I should give a shot at Step 2. Looking for suggestions, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I can't remember all the 4 NBME and two UW scores correctly right off the line. But as far as I remember my NBME forms 11 & 12 (the last two forms available at end of December) were equivalent to 228 & 222. UW's were equivalent to 206 & 218 (I started with UW). The other two NBMEs and Kaplan, have to check when I go home.

Hi everybody, being the one that started this thread I must say that is just up to you. After reading a lots of different opinion, to continue won't be easy, quite the opposite, you have to have great LORS and a good USCE in order to just have a shot and of course have a better Step 2 ck and cs.
So for me is just if you are up to put yourself in one of the touhgest and uncertainty situation. You must be conviced this is what you want and that you will be able to do the other exams with amazing scores.

Well guys,
Like other people help me, I hope I could help other, at least inspire them to continue with their dream.
I keep going and apply to an observership in a well known hospital. Meanwhile I have been working in the specialty I like in my country and have gotten good LoRs. I hope during the observership and get US LoRs. I am preparing for Step 2 CK and after observership I hope I could do the CS.
So guys, don't give up, look for opportunities and don't stress i advanced, worry one issue at the time. Trust God and your capacities.
I also been doing my knee rehab between all these and has taken a year to come back to US because of the money too, but in the end, I feel closer to the objective.
So please, don't feel discourage. Like I said in a post before, also think what you want, if to do a residency in the US or to be a residency in the specialty that you like. For me is the second, so the US is an amazing opportunity but it is not the only one. I am going to put all of me to take advantage of this opportunity but it doesn't work, my carreer will continue even if it is not in the US.

Thanks,
Steph
