Default Failed usmle step 1

Hi.I am an IMG from India. I recently gave step 1 exam with the old system and scored 191. I dont know what to do. I have lost hope for residency in US. Should i drop it or continue giving a second attempt? And will the second attempt in my profile severly affect my chances of getting into residency?

No it's not over. Make sure to do really well on your next attempt. You didn't prepare well it seems. Make sure to know Uworld First Aid and Pathoma really well. Throw in sketchy micro and sketchy pharm.

Your failed attempt will damage your residency chances but rather than giving up you should prepare better and give it another attempt. Your score suggests that with a little better preparation you have the knowledge to pass the exam. The most important thing is to have a study plan that allows you to cover all the material. It is also very important to track your progress and make sure you are on track to pass before taking it again. The NBME exams cost money but the scores you get on them are the most reflective of your real world exam scores. Lastly, I would recommend taking a course as long as it is part of an overall plan not just a way to shift responsibility for your preparation to someone else. The money you spend on the course is nothing compared to the difference it will make in your life if you achieve your dream!!

All hope is not lost but just know that now you are in a tremendous amount of pressure to score really well, like i mean 240+. Having mediocre scores the second time around is worse than having mediocre scores the first time around so consider whatever you get the second time 20 less than the actual score.

Also, you need to address why you failed in the first place. Is it your lack of understanding of concept, lack of questions or just general anxiety? try to do this first before joining a class

I firmly believe that anyone can do anything, you just have to play your cards right what you do, where you apply, how long you wait and who you shake hands with.

Say your score is around a 220 when you get your score in maybe september? if you want to apply for the 2018 match, i would say apply as broadly as possible and make as many networking as possible if you want to get into more difficult specialties like surg or radiology or something. Truth is, you just have to vibe with the right person and somewhere along the line, you will get to where you want. In the meantime, if you dont want to spend time working your ass off and improving your other steps, yes, FM IM peds is your best bet.
