Arrow Dr.NickRiviera's Exam Day Experience

Hi Everybody!

Took my exam yesterday.

Here's the breakdown of how I oriented my blocks and breaks:

Tutorial - skipped it (break time now at ~1hr). Stared block 1 next.
Block 1 - easy block, set the tone for the exam. i was worried i'd get a tough first block and that hurt my confidence, but this made me even more confident. i finished with about 10mins left so my break time was now up to 1hr10min. Took a 5min break.
Block 2 - felt just like block 1, finished with 10min left. Took a 5min break, ate a banana.
Block 3 - felt similar to the first 2. Took a 5min break, ate another banana.
Block 4 - started getting hungry but the block itself was like the previous 3. Took a 15min break to eat a 6inch sub and just walk around.
Block 5 - a little tougher than the previous 4, but still very doable. Took a 5min break to drink half a redbull.
Block 6 - a little tougher, i could feel myself losing focus and getting distracted easily. Took a 10min break to drink half a redbull and give myself a pep talk to go hard this last block.
Block 7 - was the least focussed for this one, fatigue kicked in. plus i was having trouble handling the redbull, i could feel the tremor whilst trying to move the mouse lol. But all in all it wasnt overly difficult.
and i was done! (finished with like 50min of break time left lol)

I went to the washroom in every break, just to stretch my legs.

Overall the exam felt just like an nbme, maybe nbme 12. Same difficulty. Nothing too extraordinarily difficult or new.

People say expect 5 "WTF" questions per block, i saw maybe 5 in total for the whole exam.

I was surprised to see some things not showing up on the exam, but that might just be because there aren't enough questions to get all the content in.
Nothing was emphasized too heavily. I hear people saying "my exam was all repro" or "there was so much biochem" but to be honest I think that stuff was their weakness and hence stood out in their mind. The exam was pretty well rounded.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask away.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for their support and help along the way.
Been about a 10month journey for me. Feels weird being done but now I can enjoy my summer!

I'll post my results and full prep info after July 11th or whenever I get my results.

Looks like u really nailed it! Thanks for sharing your experience!
I have some questions:
Do you think FA was enough to answer most of the questions?(imean with UW notes and extra stuff we annotated frm kaplan here n there!)
Were the Biostats questions straightforward?
And i must ask this. Did you get any questions from the NBME's u did? How abt the pictures?? (i know ive been going crazy abt the nbme's!) LOL

All the best for ur score! Have fun now, party hard!

Thanks for posting your experience!

What do you suggest I should focus on if I have less than 20 days to go!
I doing Questions right now and I'll be starting DIT 2nd pass with FA next week because I don't want to just read FA by itself. Any other suggestions ?
Do you suggest doing Webpath, Goljan, anything else in this time?
What should I do in the last 3-4 days - forgettables, FA, weak areas, etc etc ?

Thanks for all your suggestions and sorry for asking so many questions lol

I haven't really used it! I think for the picture type of questions, most of the time the question stem is enough to find out the answer. At least that's what I've encountered in the Qbanks so far.

step 1: take nbme and see where you are.
if you are less than 200, you need to revise kaplan.
if not, then stick to FA, UW, DIT
UW will be very helpful for you
I went through UW twice, and FA maybe 6,7x

Biostats was straight forward, only one i struggled on was atributable risk and thats my own fault, it kept coming up in nbmes but i kept putting off learning it lol so when i got one in the real exam i wanted to punch myself in the face, i tried working it out and i did get an answer that was on the options list so lets hope i did it correctly.
every other biostats question was they give u a table and tell us what the specificity or sensititivity is, very simple.

i saw 2,3 questions i recognized from nbmes. i got 1,2 questions i recognized from free 150. sadly, no images repeated from nbmes.

with less than 20 days left, focus on UW and FA. work on your weaknesses. make sure you have high yield stuff down.
No need for webpath.
No need for goljan this late in your prep.

i have an excel sheet of my prep (in detail), i will post it when i get my result and post my full exam prep then, simply because im really busy right now lol.
but feel free to ask questions if u cant wait that long.

what i should have done better... ummm, i dont know really. we'll see when i get my score and my perfomance layout and can see what i was weak in.
what i would have avoided... spending time looking at CTs, MRIs, histo images of anything other than the brain (brain CTs, MRIs are high yield, no other body party doe).

98% of the exam is somewhere in FA
however you do need a good foundation of concepts (ie. kaplan) for the big questions that integrate systems together.
but as far as where can the info be found, its all in FA.

did u find the exam closer to uworld or NBme , and as previous questions , did u get direct Questions frm NBME and which one , or at least the same concepts ??

also did u got alot of anatomy ?? histo ??breast and bone tumors (I know u may not remember the details ??)

what is your advice for about 2 weeks to go
i got 2,3 nbme questions
it felt like an nbme, but UW is the best preparation.
i was worried about anatomy, didnt get as many as there are in some nbme forms, but still there were a few that i had no idea on. anatomy is on of those subjects that u just hope for the best in, theres to much to prep for.
histo wasnt bad, maybe 2,3 pure histo (like gap junction stuff) questions.
i dont think i had a single breat question if i think about it
and maybe 1 or 2 bone tumor questions.

with 2 weeks left, just revise FA and UW.

How much pathoma helped you in nailing pathology on step1 exam? was it sufficient or do we need to fill the gaps by using FA/UW/Goljan?? and is there any particularly good website to look for CT/MRI of brain?
Best luck

Biostats was straight forward, only one i struggled on was atributable risk and thats my own fault, it kept coming up in nbmes but i kept putting off learning it lol so when i got one in the real exam i wanted to punch myself in the face, i tried working it out and i did get an answer that was on the options list so lets hope i did it correctly.
every other biostats question was they give u a table and tell us what the specificity or sensititivity is, very simple.

i saw 2,3 questions i recognized from nbmes. i got 1,2 questions i recognized from free 150. sadly, no images repeated from nbmes.
Oh man. only 2-3 questions out of those 2600 NBME questions?
and no images frm thr?
So how were the pictures, CT/MRI's? Did they have enough clues in the vignettes? DO u think knowing the normal frm Kaplan videos/Uworld is enough?
Thanks again

pictures and ct/mris were good, none were trying to trick you and most of them had sufficient info in the stems
kaplan + UW might be enough, but i would recommend doing FA because its High yield. theres too much in kaplan. its good for 1,2 reads to build foundations, then never look back at it and only use FA and UW

FA is enough for micro
maybe for immuno too but Kaplan immuno is such an easy and nice read that i'd say do kaplan and FA for immuno.
