Default budd chiari syndrom

Hello everyone

Can someone please explain to me why do you get absence of JVD in budd chiari syndrome although signs of congestive liver disease are present?

Much appreciated

Regards
Talal El-Jabri

In Budd-Chiari syndrome, there is occlusion of the hepatic veins; less blood returns through the inferior vena cava to the right atrium. For the jugular vein to be distended, there has to be an occlusion either at the superior vena cava level or at the right atrium level (or further down the road, at the right ventricle, pulmonary circulation etc.)
