Smile Zappeuse just took the step 1 exam

Hi all,
well that's it, exam is over..dunno what to say..I studied through Kaplan videos, Kaplan Lecture Notes, Kaplan QBank, FA, UW..scored 250 on nbme 12 last week..
and I would say I could reply with confidence only 70% of the questions.. exam was really weird...even simple concepts asked in very weird and twisted ways ..many times you just cannot figure out what they want..I felt physically sick for 3 hours...it was hard to focus..all I feel now is mistakes I made crowding in my head..trying to forget about the whole thing..
my advice: don't overstudy..get a good idea of the material, even if superficial, and go sit for the exam..with less confidence you are more motivated..
I think I did too extensive preparations, postponed the exam once and it was really the last moment before the burnout phase..
keep yr fingers crossed for me..
good luck to all!!

I've had friends who came out feeling miserable, and were convinced that they'll pass with a below-average score. But did great! So trust me, don't let doubts bother you! Plus, extensive preparation never goes to waste. So now, just relax, enjoy the freedom. And update us the day you hear your great score! We're all keeping our fingers crossed for you! G'luck

Zappeuse, I took the exam June 14th and damb. It was so hard so I feel your pain. I would be shocked if I got 70% correct. I had high hopes with a nmbe 6 212 six weeks before exam without studying then a 257 on nbme 7 the fay after completing DIT three weeks later. With three weeks to go I thought I was set. I was getting around 80% on uworld blocks timed unused. I felt like this exam destroyed me and I'm not just saying that. I'd be elated if I got a 225 at this point. I just felt like they used weird words that I've never seen an example: whats responsible for granuloma formation... Possible answer "type I interferon"??! Wtf is that! Is that inf-y? There was a lot of that on my test. So whatever. All we can do is hope. It just was really weird and hard. Advice for people is don't over study and if i walk out and wanna die, you prob did okay. If it felt even the slightest bit good, you probably rocked it. Good luck Zapp. Lets just enjoy our time off. Thanks for the post. Selfishly it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who feels like I got killed my step 1.

Capo, we took exam on the same day. does it mean we had the same kind of questions? Exactly, as you write, many words show up I have NEVER seen before. So that was the killing day..
I feel like crying when I see people writing how easy the exam was..
my questions:
is it possible to have tests with such a big variability in terms of difficulty?
do they take into account the level of difficulty of the test when scoring it??
do they take into account other people's result of the same test when scoring it?
I seriously need answer to these questions.
feel like killing myself after 6 months of studying and not being with my kids. anyway, I keep the faith!!

I also did nbme 6, 3 weeks before exam, I had 225. pictures were alright, it's the answer choices that were sort of a problem...

Zapp, I've read post about people saying it was easy and I have friends who have said the same. I also have a friend who's word I trust the most and is a a lot smarter than myself tell me the he got "raped" by step1. He took his test June 9th. He told me he didn't wanna scare me right before my test so he has just old me initially that it wasn't that bad. This guy was looking for 260+ and was doing very well on nbme tests and stuff. I have a sister who is a year ahead of us in medical school. She thought her test was impossible and she ended up doing okay but not as well as expected. She has friends that cried when they left cause they were sure they failed and ended up doing just fine. So you can't listen to all the gunners who say it's all do easy and their shot don't stink. Cause in the end we all look at the same books and all do uworld and stuff so I'm trying to tell myself that if it looks foreign to me, it prob looks foreign to most. Congrats on being done. Enjoy your kids in your time off. I'll enjoy stating at the wall for andre mote days before rotations start. Best of luck to you!

There is this rumor - my friends told me, correct me if im wrong that nobody on the same room in the examination room does the same exam -so different questions for different students, but on the same day people all over the world do get the same exam as yours, and there is this rumor again thats all what it is that your score is compared to the people who did the same exam as yours , so you get your score according to how other people do with the same test and ofcourse this is also standardized on the average score of previous exams. So in the end as the Person before me wrote most of us study from the same resources so if you feel that you got a very difficulut exam then probably other people who are doing the same exam will have hard time with it aswell so it's theoratically true that you can get high score still. of crouse we also have our own knowledge from our schools so some people may control some subjects better then others but i have to admit that after you study from FA, Kaplan DIT etc, alot of that previous knowledge gets overwritten by FA facts which is abit sad, but anyway as i was saying in the end even if you fill that you did bad it still doesnt mean that you get a bad score, and in some cases even higher then expected, no?

Hope You will do great with your results.
Could you tell us how was the exam compare to NBME and is it true that the exam looks now definitely harder than UW and finally was there a special focus on particular subject.
Thank you and good luck for the rest.

PS: Zappeuse means remote control addict?!!!!

yeah, not a big compliment but one of my french friends used this expression as he thinks I'm switching between people as others switch between channels by the remote control whatever, it was a long time ago..
well, the exam was horrible, read this post from the beginning. for instance there were many words I have never seen before. nmbe-s seemed much more predictable and fair altough despite the weird exam, my score correlates pretty well with nbme 12 that I took 1 week before it (gave 250 vs 244 on exam). I was @ 81st percentile for UW (tutor, untimed)
As far as I know each year they change the question pool in mid may, not sure why, maybe because most people take the exam within these weeks. although you can also read positive experiences from people who took it in june (although they seem to have scored lower - another proof that difficult qs are difficult for everyone so you can still get good scores)
the only subject my perfomance went down to borderline was musculoskeletal (ridiculous, isn't it?)
good luck!
