Embarrassed done with step 1....my experience

Hey, guys I took my step 1 today.
The exam was weird and they asked minute molecular details of simple diseases. Lots of genetic experiments with graphs and knock mice were thrown in. I struggled in atleast 3 blocks with timing coz questions were so damn long(8-10 liners). Apart from that rest of the exam was pretty straight forward but i ended up getting confused between two options cz they were asking simple concepts in a very twisted manner. I remember being asked lots of antiviral drugs. I got around 4 heart sound questions and they were a bit different. There was an animated human body with cardiac auscultation points and u have to listen the sound in all four of them and decide by yourself which ones prominent.
And there were CTs and Xrays as usual (lots of them). Also i got brain gross anatomic cross sections.
I got 5 ditto questions from nbme 7 i think. In every block there were atleast 4-5 wtf questions and i think i marked around 10-12 question in every block in which i was unsure
Overall, m feeling very lousy after the exam and random questions are popping in my head and screwing me up. My nbme scores were 235, 238, 231 and 242( 7,11,12 and 13)....so m just praying to god that i havent screwed the test enough that it screws me back with low scores.

Thanks for shearing! First of all I wish you good luck with your score!
I would like to ask you if you can write in few words, what topics would you have done better to be more prepared to their "twisted way of asking" btw I have heared the word twisted already in relation to usmles new questions, and I'm just trying to understand what actually it means?

many things....they used graphs in places u'll never imagine, there were genetic experiment questions which were horribly long, molecular biology concepts were heavily tested and they really made me sweat considering i take pride in my genetics as i hardly got any genetics question wrong in nbme and had 96% correct genetics question in uw first pass....but here i was feeling lost.
when i started the exam, the first 3 questions were like wtf are they trying to ask and it really broke my confidence....the next 10 questions were straight forward and i got into flow

Thanks for sharing!

Just wondering, what do you think you could've done better or suggest doing in the last week before the exam ? I'm doing FA & NBME 13 & 7. Also going over the HY/Weak areas & list of forgettables. Any suggestions?

I hope you score well! Your NBME scores are good!

i would suggest to read FA only. I just wish i should have seen more radiology images and revising bits of kaplan's cell and molecular biology pathology images are covered in goljan, so i would suggest flicking thorugh goljan only for images once you are done with a system from FA.

Thanks for sharing your experience???

how are the questions compared to uworld and nbme??? harder easier or about the same???

did u do the book high yield for cell and molecular biology???

what would u recommend focusing on more??? along w/ kaplan notes??? did u do kaplan? was it helpful for most of the exam questions????

i had read High Yield Cell and Molecular biology selectively twice. Some of the topics are overkill in that book, so you really have to skim it.

The level of questions, i would say matched that of nbme 13....but somewhat easier than UW questuions i think

Hey man, you wrote that you had lots of gentic questions, did you really had lots of them or was it like 10Q totally? also is the information from first aid enough to answer those knock in and out mice questions?

thx

i think i got 5 genetics and molecular bio questions per block. Knock out/in mice question in total were 2-3.

i remember this question from behavioural which has been bugging me entire day. there was this stem in which a person has limb paralysis after breakup and in his neuro exam the reflexes were normal. My first answer was conversion disorder but thenthe flood of doubts crept in when i focussed on that all the muscle reflexes were intact. I remembered something from kaplan lecture that a person paralysed in conversion disorder is ACTUALLY paralysed, so i changed my answer to malingering. can u guys tell whether i made a mistake or nt.

thanks for the uplifting words man. today i did tried to have some fun. watched the second half of season 2 of game of thrones and then went for the movie madagascar 3. Laughed a lot after so many days, laid down in bed doing nothing and thinking what a luxury it is to actually lay down without having to think about an upcoming exam like step 1

wishing all of you, all the very best for the exam

5 per block?! That's about 10% of the exam!! WOW.

As for that question, I thought of conversion disorder right away. Not sure what else could fit? Why would the pt be malingering - what's the possible secondary gain? And if that was the case, they wouldn't give you the fact that he is going through a break up (acute stressor). Right?

Anyway, don't worry man, just relax for now! Your NBME scores were great and I think its normal to feel the way you're feeling right now i.e remembering the questions! Also I think that people tend to remember the questions or topics that they had a hard time with on the exam. For example, it's possible that you had like 20 Anatomy questions but since you didn't have any problem with them, you just don't remember it!

GOOD LUCK for your score!

actually the patient was taken to the hospital by her boyfriend. It was the information aabout her intact muscle reflexes that screwed me up. the secondary gain i thought was that her boyfriend may reconcile with her.

anyways, m trying not to remember anymore questions and partying and boozing as much as i can

Sachinkumar, I had a similar exam experience as you there were a bunch of questions I had no idea what they were even talking about. In terms of my exam score/ Uworld... it was very similar to yours. Unfortunately, the place where I took my exam placed me under the vent and I had all the cold air blow on me. I was shivering throughout the exam. However I do come prepared and brought a coat. But they warned me if I wore the coat I can't take it off. The air conditioner was ridiculous ...it wasn't on the whole time. It was on... cooled up the room to 60 degrees then shut off... and turned back on when the room was 80 degrees. Of course I the only one who noticed it because I was sitting under the St**p vent! anyway besides for the cycling between shivering and sweating.... I'm not sure if i even passed... I am really hoping that I get at least a 220... I would be happy with anything above that... I feel liked I marked so many questions and didn't even have time to go back to them ...and the ones I didn't mark i was very confused. Never taking another test in that place again... crazy air conditions.. plus it was 100 degrees outside that day (just my luck).... really hoping just to pass by the way I already counted I got 20 question for sure wrong (I even know the right answer) ... and much more that I can't remember off hand... ugh

Are questions on the real thing from Kaplan, FA or UW, like to the point where you can go back home after the test and look it up in those sources??...I always figured every question is bogous and will be very out of left field

I figured out my mistakes in my sleep, while driving, eating and shopping... i knew the answer but couldn't think during the exam. But you can look it up via first aid. First aid is the most dense/ yet helpful text. In terms of world.... I only did uworld once... i only had a total of 6 weeks to study for this test ...so It would be very difficult for me to remember where to look up the information from a qbank. I am also upset because I rushed through Uworld (the best Qbank ever) because I had to do all the questions in 6 weeks and study the material from first aid (I just finished my second year of med school so I couldn't study any earlier). I did not do kaplan so I have no comment on that. In my opinion the test questions were worded really weird and long and i couldn't think because of my temp fluctuations.. I felt like i was going through menopause with all the hot and cold flashes... ugh.. hope this helps...
