Smile Hope2Pass Exam Day Experience

I took my exam 2 days ago. I will post my detailed study plan after I get my score!
The following is my exam day experience and some tips/ strategies I found useful.
I will try to post them as questions that you might have -
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Day BEFORE the exam-

1) Did you get enough sleep?
-No, I managed to get 4 hours of sleep. I went to bed early enough by giving my self 1 hour to actually fall asleep and then get an 8 hour sleep. Unfortunately, I couldn't fall asleep for about 5 hours. I guess I was a little anxious (which is normal the night before the exam) because I was just laying there, twisting and turning thinking about the exam!

2) How did the lack of sleep affect you on the exam day?
-It didn't! I didn't feel tired at all during my exam. The adrenaline rush of the exam keeps you going and gives you enough energy to get through it!

3) What did you do the day before?
- I started my morning by doing the free 150 questions. Scored 80% on it which was a good confidence boost.
- I watched the tutorial from the free 150 software so I could use that time towards my break time.
- After finishing the free 150, I decided to go over some Rapid Review from FA, a List of forgettables and list of things I had decided to put on my marker board.
- I stopped studying after 4 PM, got out of the house and hung out with one of my friends.
- Then I came home, had an early dinner, got my things ready for the exam day such as my ID's, scheduling permit, and a bag of goodies. Then I called it a night and went to bed.

4) What was in your bag of goodies ?
- FOOD! Here are the things I took to the exam with me:
  • 4 Granola Bars
  • 4 Bottles of water
  • 1 bottle of Coke
  • 1 energy drink
  • 1 cup of Coffee
  • 2 burgers from McDonalds
  • 1 hand towel
  • 2 cookies
  • 2 boiled eggs
  • 2 ID's - Driver's license & Passport (just in case)
  • Scheduling Permit & Prometric appointment Confirmation
The scheduling permit is necessary so make sure you print it out and take it with you. You will not be allowed to write the exam without it! I took the Prometric appointment confirmation email with me just in case I had any problems. And clearly I did not have all that food during my exam because then I would probably have spent more time going to the washroom than doing my exam! It's always better to take extra because you never know what you might need! And the hand towel was to wash my face during the breaks because I find it that splashing your eyes with cold water is the best way to get refreshed instantly.

EXAM DAY-

A brief summary of my day -
I had two boiled eggs for breakfast. This is a GOOD breakfast before an endurance exam. It gives you a lot of energy early in the morning! Anyways, I got to the prometric center about 30 mins earlier and did my sign in etc, got my locker and put my things in the locker. I took out a bottle of water, two granola bars and coffee and put them in the front of the locker. This way every time I took a break, I didn't need to waste time opening up my locker, then my bag and looking for what I need. I had something to hydrate me (water), give me energy (coffee) and to eat (granola bars) right infront of me after opening my locker. This actually does save you time! The exam took me about 7.5 hours so I still have about 30 mins of break time left over after I finished!

1) How did you manage your breaks ?
- I took a break after EACH block! Initially I wanted to do the first two blocks one after another but decided to take a small break between every block instead. I took a 5 min break after every block and a 15 min lunch break after my 4th block.

2) How did you find the exam? Was it difficult or easy? Were there any blocks in particular that were harder than the rest?
- Let me begin by saying that after the first two blocks, I just wanted to shoot myself! I think it was just the nerves playing me over while doing the first two blocks. I marked about 20 questions in the first block and another 17 in the second block. However, I was sure for some questions but just looked at another choice n then started questioning myself. This used up my time that I shouldn't have spent on the questions I knew, only because I started to doubt myself! Anyways, after the first two blocks, I was more confident and into my exam. On average I marked about 10-15 questions in each block just to come back and look at them and think about them before submitting my block. Well, here's the break up of my day each block at a time:
  • Block 1 - Tough. My thoughts were "May be it was just coz it was the first one."
  • Break - for 5 mins, had a granola bar & some coffee.
  • Block 2 - Tough as well. However this set the pace for my exam & it got me going.
  • Break - for 5 mins again. just had some water & coffee.
  • Block 3 - Not too bad. Fatigue was kicking in looking at the screen so decided to take a longer break.
  • Break - 7 mins, Water + Coffee (keep yourself hydrated!)
  • Block 4 - Had 2 calculations that I had no idea on how to do so just guessed on them. Other than that it was good!
  • Break - 15 mins, had 1 burger + half of energy drink + water.
  • Block 5 - Good! Never felt better during the exam lol
  • Break - 5 mins, had the rest of the energy drink.
  • Block 6 - Good again! Felt more confident.
  • Break - 5 mins, went to the washroom & gave myself a little pep talk in front of the mirror for the last block.
  • Block 7 - Good block. Found it fairly easy except for a couple questions
  • Finished!
Just cause I am writing "GOOD" after every block doesn't mean it went well! Well I hope it did but I am a little nervous for my score lol At the same time I am happy its over. I have tried not to think of the exam as much but can't help it sometimes! :sorry: I walked out with mixed feeling after finishing the exam; happy its over but wasn't sure of how it went. Oh well, first thing I did was walk across the street, go to a bar and enjoyed my first beer of the summer.

3) What was on it? Was something tested more heavily than other topics?
- I thought it was a fair exam. Heart sounds weren't too bad, just make sure you move your stethoscope around in the visual to hear all the heart sounds and recognize which one is the anomaly. Two calculations were hard but I had may be about 4-5 biostats questions that were very easy and straight forward. Don't spend time on the calculations when you see it, just mark it & do it at the end. Genetics & Molecular bio weren't too bad. I think I had 1 pedigree question which was pretty easy. Surprisingly, I didn't find too much Pharm in it but a lot of path & patho phys. Also, the gross anatomy was one of my weaknesses and I had may be around 7-8 questions on it. I think I did OK except for a couple questions where I narrowed it down to two options and then made an educated guess. Other than that, the exam is fair game and expect all the high yield diseases etc to be asked.

4) What was your attitude towards the exam?
- This might seem like a weird question but its the KEY to doing well and being confident. I went in with the belief that I will not know the answer to every question & I will have to make guesses. I set a random number of 10-15 questions in every block that I might not know the answer of. When it came down to a few blocks in which I wasn't sure of may be like 7-8 questions, it didn't bring me down. Instead I was like "Wow! This block went better than expected! Lets move on to the next one!". Don't go back and think it was bad if you don't get a few questions. That's normal but the key is to move on and not feel the heat/ intensity of the exam pressure.

5) Was First Aid enough ? How many times should we go over FA or the other books ? Should we do it with or without DIT ? Do you recommend any other books ?

- FA is good! It's especially good if you do it with DIT but it depends on how close you are to the exam. If you have 1.5 months left then start DIT n do it! Take a month to do DIT, it will definitely help you. It also depends on where your score is. Take a pre & post DIT to determine the effect of DIT. But if your pre DIT score in the nbme is above 240, then don't expect too much of an increase. I did FA about twice before my exam but I've read that book about 5-6 times before. This time I was a lot more focused on CONCEPTS rather than cramming the stupid details. As most people would say, I recommend doing Kaplan for clearing some concepts.

6) Any other tips and advice ?
- Not really I think I covered everything I wanted to say.
- Eat well, sleep well, be confident, you got this!
- Make sure you do the free 150 (I had about 5-6 questions from it).
- Do a lot of questions but go after the concept!
- Make a dedicated list of forgettables for yourself!
(Use this as a template: List of Forgettables - What you need to review few days before the exam)
- Before you know it, it will all be over soon!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok guys, I can't think of anything else to write in here right now. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped me through out this journey. Hopefully it will yield fruitful results! And I wish everyone writing the step 1, GOOD LUCK! You have come this far so just pray for the strength to get you through it and you will get it done!

If you have ANY questions, concerns, queries, worries, comments and or feed back please let me know!

Default qbank

Hope2Pass congratulations on finishing this hard and challenging journey! I hope you are catching up with everything you had to quit from because of the exam prep

I have an inquiry about question banks. Which qbank did you find most beneficial in terms of the exam? Was it like, Kaplan qbank for getting all the concepts and details and Uworld for integrating and getting ready for exam-like style questions?

Thanks bro.
The physio wasn't too bad. I had may be 7-8 arrow questions but they were all very doable. Some were about respiratory and metabolic acidosis etc and I got a few with the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system along with CO, SV and HR questions. You just have to apply concepts in those so weren't too bad.

I am not really sure about that but I think it was different for each block. Overall the exam was probably easier than the NBME's. But I definitely encountered 5-6 questions straight from the free 150 questions. There were a lot of direct questions but at the same time there were some that required 2-3 steps. I guess once I get my score, I'll know which NBME it correlated best with.

Thanks. Wish you all the best for your step 1!

Anatomy questions were mostly straight forward but some went into detail about the not so high yield things. There were questions about the upper limb & luckily I only got 1 or 2 questions about the brachial plexus. For lower limb, I had one question on the obturator nerve and its function. I had a question on the lumbar puncture, the layers of the abdominal wall and which layer has the myenteric plexus. I think FA covers most of everything! But at the same time, don't freak out if you seem something new on the exam!

The thing is I did UW a long time back! I basically focused on Kaplan Qbank this time around to get the concepts down. The UW Interface is EXACTLY like the USMLE. So once you go into the exam and sit down in front of the computer, it feels very familiar and after a while it just feels like you're doing a block of UW. I think if you can then the best option would be to do both the blocks. But if you are low on time then it would be better to go through UW (as many have suggested) but since I did UW about 8 months back, this time I just focused on Kalpan Qbank.

Thank you Casandra!
You can read my answer above about the Qbanks. But to answer your question - I think Kaplan Qbank was pretty good except for when they throw in the most random questions know to humanity! If you choose to do Kaplan Qbank, just go through their HY questions. They also have some good media questions.

Surprisingly I didnt have any angiograms! I did have a couple MRI's for hemorrhage and CT's of the thoracic level. Histological images were there as well but mostly everything could be answered from the question stem itself. I remember one heart sound that I needed to hear and recognize to answer the question. But the question stem stated "left lateral decubitus position" so I figured its Mitral & then just had to listen for the opening snap ... it was Mitral Stenosis Pictures weren't too bad though, just read the question stem and you'll find your answer!

My stats -

Kaplan Qbank: 58%.
(only finished 80%)

Free 150 = 80%

I did NBME 5,7,11,12,13 ONLINE. Did NBME 2,3,4 offline. For each of the online NBME's I did the offline version after to see how many I got wrong. and then used the formula: NBME score * 1.4 = USMLE predicted score. That's in the brackets to see how well that formula works. I think you can use 1.4 or 1.38 either one, not sure which one I had used but either way, it predicts pretty close for most of them.

May 6th:
NBME 5: 330/182
(offline: 64% = 179)

May 14th:
NBME 1: 147/200
(offline: 74% = 206)

May 22nd:
NBME 2: 145/200
(offline: 73% = 203)

May 24th:
NBME 3: 144/200
(offline: 72% = 202)

June 4th:
NBME 12: 430/205
(150/200 = 75%)

June 10th:
NBME 11: 420/203
(145/200 = 73%)

June 22nd:
NBME 13: 440/207
(141/192 = 73%)

June 24th:
NBME 7: 430/205
(150/200 = 75%)

Thanks man...how does it feel to be done? Lol bet its a weird feeling after a long ass journey.., hope your getting drunk haha.....can't wait till I'm done lol

THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING!

Your post (2month, 1.5 months, etc) has not only allowed so many to people to exchange ideas and strength to their study plans but it has a created a support system. So while its sad to see you move on to 2CK, its much more encouraging to follow your journey.

It definitely feels good to be done!
I highly recommend Pathoma! It really helped me with Pathology. You should definitely do it if you're weak in Path. Even if its a strong subject it will still help you strengthen all the concepts!
As for questions straight from the NBME - I think I had a couple questions with the similar format but I don't remember if I had any straight from the NBME.

aj23 - Time to go to a new source for Behavioral. Read BRS !! Its an amazing book actually. Just read the ethics sections. Its by Dr. Barbra Fadem and she really knows her stuff! She's like the queen of Behavioral Sicence/Ethics. I am sure once you go over the ethics sections/ whatever you need to work on from the BRS book you will be performing a lot better!

Congrats on being done. Wish you all the best.

Were tumor markers and cell receptors heavily tested on your exam? Were most questions of the 2-3 step type questions or they werent as twisted as UW?

Thank you

Tumor Markers and Cell Receptors werent as heavily tested.
I used a couple threads from this forum under Step 1 bits & pieces I believe. Just search for "CD MARKERS" and you will find a lot of threads that have ALL the HY CD Markers that we should know.

There were A LOT of 2-3 step questions. But they were not too hard. I don't really remember UW questions as I did Qbank close to my exam!

Just wanted to ask you one more question, how was the biochem overall? was it evenly distributed between cell/molec/metab or was one heavily more tested then the others? Ask this because I frequent sdn a lot and they were stressing a lot more molec bio then the others....thanks again for your help man

@aj23: I'm not sure. Shouldn't take more than 2 hours to finish the questions and review them. When I was close to my exam, I was reviewing a block of 46 questions in 30 mins max!

@DefeatTheBeast: Definitely focus on Genetics! I feel that cellular and molecular were tested as well but then again, I don't have a big problem with biochem so I tend to find it an easier topic now.

They do repeat questions!
You don't have to go over all of them if you dont want to. Just go over the ones that you got wrong. See the thing here is, you should've gone over them as you took em. Did you take NBME's 1,2,3,4 offline/online ? I would say you should look over them because it will just expose you to more questions and format of questions used in the USMLE.

no i have not taken NBME's 1,2,3 and 4 yet. Im asking if i shud take them offline or not. I've taken 5,6,11,12,13 online or offline already and will definetly take 7 in a couple of days.
Oh well i guess i should take 1,2,3,4as well if time permits .
thanks

Embarrassed nbme-13

ok guys i did my nbme-13

This is the 1st time in my life i am getting a score that 200+
and am happy with it.... like i am not a super genius for 230+ n all but did what i could.

I scored 450/210

which is great for me, now i feel i should have done UW much earlier!!

am attaching my score report as well, so you guys can see and any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

the thing is, when i did nbme-11 2 weeks back it showed a good score for Cardio with a star couple other subjects.

But this time its going other way round..lol...

but doesnt matter, no complains

From now on am planning to do only Morning nbme(offlines) then Afternoon till i sleep off UW with FA for the weaker subjects.

hope that will booost a little bit of my score.. lol

exam scheduled on 24th july.

Yes I wanted to know what your study schedule was like! What's books/qbanks did you use and what you wish you could have done if you could go back in time? In other words what worked and what was a waste of time? Congrats on passing

Congratulations!

Thanks for the useful advice. I have been following your Step 1 experience for a while.

I just received my result as well, 171/71. The score was not really a surprise. After having postponed the test in the past I was under a lot of pressure to take it this time. My preparation with Kaplan and PP videos was too passive. I jumped from source to source without repeating or even finishing the material. I couldn't even manage to get through FA cover to cover one time. Another mistake was paying for Step 2 CK instead of DIT.

I am about to start training as a sleep technician, but have decided to put that off for another 8 weeks. This is my last chance to focus full time on Step 1.

New Plan:
Weeks 1-4
Pathoma - 1 week
Kaplan Qbank - (about 20% done so far)
Read FA twice
Kaplan Pharm and Physio Videos
Listen to Goljan while working out 45-60min each day
Take a NBME after the 4 weeks

Weeks 5-8
DIT (twice)
Repeat UW QBank
Read FA two more times
BRS Physio & Path
Lange Pharm Cards (not sure)
Listen to Goljan while working out 45-60min each day
At least two NBME's
Take Exam

Please let me know if this sounds like a good schedule. Thanks a lot.

How abt this,
After doing pathoma,
Revise kaplan books on your own!!!

No videos just pure studying..
I know it sounds hard but thats what it demands,

Then after it do FA only once.
Now,

after these take NBME and just close everything and fo FA, FA, FA and thats all...
plus questions are must...
do 3-4 blocks everyday I'd suggest do UW but finish kaplan also..

Hope this is helpful...
good luck...

Thanks for the advice. I have an older set of Kaplan books (2009). Is it worth upgrading to the 2012 version?

So the plan would be to do Pathoma (once the java videos actually start working ), read Kaplan (1 book every 2-3 days), and 2 blocks a day for the first month. Then take NBME followed by FA and 3-4 blocks a day. What about DIT? I could use the extra help to memorize FA. Has anyone tried the Falcon First Aid review? It's 1/2 the price of DIT.
