Question Why do people lie about their Step Scores?

There are few students who lie about their score, whether it's good or bad.
For example, I know someone who actually got 238 on Step 1 (which is a pretty good score in my opinion) but they went around telling everyone that they got 251.

What's up with that? Why are people bumping up their scores?

Is it called "Rationalization" in behavioral science?

I guess most of them have low self esteem.
my classmate prepared for this exam for almost 12 months, scored 222 but wrote in the forum how he scored 260 after reading for 3 months?

u should take stories u read in the forum with a grain of salt!
some people are out to misdirect us

Wow. That's a shame. I mean if you don't want to tell people your score then don't say anything. it infuriates me that some people, without being asked, go around telling/posting a false score.

Lol good one. But the thing is, there's nothing to rationalize. The score you get is the one you're stuck with. You can't "rationalize" that I studied for 12 mos or I have 4.0 GPA so I can't be stuck with 238. 251 is a rational number for my hard work so I'll just tell people 251 is what I got.

hehe...I can understand your concern.

But we should take this forum as a learning tool like UWorld and not like NBME Form.lol.We know one thing for sure that most of the people do good on this exam and that makes it simple. If they can do it, we can do it.

Other people stories (True or False) should not interfere with our commitment in the first place.

For the same reason there are/were people in our med schools scoring >90% on the exams and bragging that they were studying only 2 days. And when for example after the exam people would debate on one of the exam questions, they would blurt that their argument is supported by page no. XYZ in this book and page no. ABC in the other book. "Yeah man, sure, you studied for 2 days only and you can remember page numbers? sure, rings true...NOT!'.
Among us there are people who need to read something twice to cover the material really good, and there are those who need to read it 4 times. We all have our variability regions on the chromosomes, don't we?

The bottom line is, imho, that as long as we read it as many times as we need to to understand and memorize the material, we stand a great chance of becoming great doctors. Will the patient be interested in how many times we read the book? Will our boss be impressed by that? No!
Even Boards don't ask us that so, why bother making up facts that will come to the surface one way or the other...sooner or later...

Hey sardarjis, Nice display name. (sorry no personal offence to anyone)

About scores, What to say.. I came across both kinda geniuses 1. Who over tell there scores and 2. Those who under tell there scores.

People have insecurities.
The most insecure group people i ever met were medical students. Most of them have some sort of complex they are working out.

Also, some people build a crazy smart reputation in school, they feel they have to live up to the expectation.

I had a friend who studied for step 1 for 3 months and wrote it. Got a 250, was crazy super happy and started rotations around united states a year ago.

Only the problem was he never wrote step and we never went to the United States. His parents are convinced hes going to be a doctor by 2013 and currently in Atlanta. Actually, he moved to western Canada and just killed time trying to figure out what to do with his life.

U know the real sad part of the story? He gave me advice on how to perform well on step 1. He was actually my primary source. He told me 30% of his step 1 exam was Biochemistry pathways.

Default remember also...

The people in this kind of forums that act as if they were Goljan or KLN human incarnation. Arguing about everything, making fun of someone's else answers and/or treating people as if no one but them were the keepers of the true about everything. I've bumped with that "kind" of humans beings in this forum... after step 1... it turned out that they didn't passed the 220... (Defense mechanisms here Dr.???)

My point is... stick with the people that encourage you and help you to keep up. Don't even bother with the others... Believe me or not, they are more afraid than we are...
