Smile Sikorski. Exam. Score. Advice.

Hello,

I was a silent lurker in this forum for a long.... nah, cut it!
You know I am a big time flooder around here =)

Big big big (huge) THANK YOU to this forum, you guys were there 24/7 for me.

It was a long-ass 1.5 years, during which I was working full-time from 8 to 4 and than it was a pathetic "lunch"-hour with my colleague and than I would hit the library.

I am Russian, graduated in 2010, never was a brightest student, but always a big time party boi. I started studying in Chicago, 14-wk Kaplan class which was a complete waste of money and time, but it was nice to live in Chi, where I met a bunch of good peps. I consider that period of time to be a "set up" for the following study period, that's where I just slowly learned what books i need and what should i do... roughly.
Teachers in Kaplan were very very lame. Most of them were PhD's and had no clue of exam material what so ever, others would just read from the book. There was this weird guy with a beard teaching pathology and shaking his "Pathoma" book in the air making everyone buy it. I didn't.
Kudrath (Physio guy) taught pharmacology - just read from the book and made 1-2 mistakes in every drug he would read, moron...

Than I traveled to other city and started my job. I got Kaplan videos from the internet - google it, there is plenty.
I spent 3 months watching these videos and listening to primitive jokes about mr. Jones and staring into hypnotic eyes of dr.Raymon. Another waste of time.

Than I tried to do lecture notes on my own and do qbanks. I sucked. I scored between 40% and 55%, my test was comming up, I was freaking out, grew up a beard (almost like pathoma weirdo) stressed out... Took NBME. Sucked again, postponed exam. Thats where **** hit the fan - I started studying... did KLN again, did FA, spent another several months in hardcore study - took NBME and had low scores... Canceled exam, lost money - but got hope. Now I was passing, I was feeling good.

Some morning, I came across Taus method and followed it till the last day. Probably the best way that worked out for me.

Did UW 3 times, but had only 2 q's on the exam from there. Did USMLErx - cheap, laggy, shitty interface, but I would say thats your second best bet! I had many questions on the test from Rx.

The exam was weird. Some say that the questions were spread out though the syllabus on the test, but that was not the case w me. My exam was a ****ing nephrology boards - they took every single detail about kidneys from FA and asked me, again and again and again. In one block I had 2 q's - one after another basically asking exactly same thing.
There were many easy questions - "regurg questions" where thay would describe a person and all you have to do is to diagnose her. Very simple.
People say they have WTF questions - believe me or not - I haven't. I saw all of this crap before during my preparation. I had tones of questions on some minute detail, some weird crap. (Many questions were from Goljan audios, some real stinky stuff). Lots of graphs with stupid arrows - hated it.

During my study I did all the possible qbanks (except for unknown crap like usmleweapon or whatever):

UW - golden. Must do. Infact, some american med students do UW 3 times during 2nd year, so do not worry about flawing it by doing it early in your prep - you need to know the questions.

Usmlerx - they have had 20+ medstudents that took their qbank and then took the test, so all their % after correct answers are based on these 20 guys. This is sucks and not powerful. But their questions are great. I mean "great" - "exam-like", not beautifully done or perfectly well-thought... Helps to solidify FA in your mind.

Kaplan - boring. Huge. Long question stems. I dunno, "okay".

UsmleConsult - crap. No doubt.

FA - absolute golden. all the exam was from FA. But do it acording to TAUS method (freakin google it right now!!)

===============================
Thanks for reading, good luck!

My score is 85

Did you do NBME 13 before the test? Was the test like it?? Im asking you this because i did it and i hate it. It takes for ever to think through the questions from there

And i do agree with raymon's eyes being hypnotic. lol

Sikorski, love ur thread and i' ll write my own exam experience within ur thread.....
First of all congrat on ur accomplishment..... U made me lough loudly in my work place when i read ur comments esp hypnotic eyes of Dr. Raymon... Hilarous..
I got my score today too ,got 217 ,not too bad to get into pathology residency as my primary concern.
I passed through alot too but not in term of studying lol which made me pospone. In my preparation i read kaplan once , watch few videos esp neuro anatomy and biochemistry and physio.
Read goljan which is very important and micro made redicu...simple which was waste of time, listen to goljan audio when i was driving to and back from hospital.
Fa once , do uw twice , nbme 6,7,12,13 got 215 in 13 ( close to my real score)
Thats all .. Never feel confident to take the test but i was bored from studying so i took it finally and thx God passed.
Regards to u .... And good luck for everybody in step 2.

Thanks guys! Appreciate that!

I did approximatelly 12,000 - 15,000 questions all together during 1.5 years of study...

so when I started the first block (the easiest) - i had 20 minutes left (I swear!) - so I had plenty of time to check them and get acquainted with the format... I am kinda guy who changes incorrect to correct according to UW. So it worked well for me.

The second block left me with 15 minutes, but I used them all up to check the answers.
So when I took the break - I felt like "I just paid lots of money and freaked out, but this is just lame stuff in there"...
But on the 5th block I freaked out, was only left with 5 minutes - lots of hardcore questions 3-4 level items.

======

Block 5 is where I leaned back in my chair, combed my hair and closed my eyes for a minute maybe, just to get myself together...
I had the exact same feeling as I had about a year ago while diving on the West Coast - there under water I thought - "I am thousands of miles away from my home, I am all alone right here in the abyss" the same thought came to me there in prometric. I would not say that it was panic, but it was definitely something you feel in extreme environments... But I collected myself and finished it.

the last 2 blocks were okay and left me with 15 minutes again.

======

When I came out of the prometric - I walked to the nearest shopping center and just did a shopotherapy for the rest of the day, trying to block the memories of the test.
It was Sunday, but I managed to have a couple shots for the acomplishment. Next morning I was at my workplace...

======

Against my conscious will I was able to remember about 20 mistakes I made and approximatelly 160-180 questions that I got right.
Stems were short and lots of direct questions.

======

You know what I forgot... this word "doable" that you see in everyone else's experiences... Well yes, what do you call doable?! - being on the edge of your performance for 8 hours? - I guess thats doable, yes they do send people in space and thats doable too, right?
- No! Its hard from the standpoint of your stamina. I am a marathon runner and this stupid test is like that too. Marathon is doable right? - yes, but you are likely to get ischemic damage to your heart at some point, ruin your joints and die from pontine myelinosis... - doable.

You pay almost a thousand dollars and they don't even give you a shitty lunch!

Step 2 - you are next in my skull collection.

Sikorski.

Pharm flashcards were very very helpful. Loved them.

Did Lippincott flashcards for biochem and genetics - these are good, especially to remember crap like glycogen storage diseases and Tay-Sachs (wait, what are these mucolipidosis?) - I forgot...

But the thing is now I can let myself to forget all this stupid stuff haha!

Whats the 18:1 fatty acids - I dont remember! Yes I start wiping this crap out of my brain!

Against my conscious will I was able to remember about 20 mistakes I made and approximatelly 160-180 questions that I got right.
Stems were short and lots of direct questions.

======

Sikorski.
WOWW..
What a post...
Making this my BOOKMARK...

Thanks doc..

Default Congrats!

Awesome job and great post!! So funny esp because i know exactly what you mean with Mr jones.. I also took 7 week kaplan lectures, and found them not as useful as i hoped it would be.. And i guess i have been studying for a long time as well, on and off..

But anyway, seemed like you did a bunch of questions!! I wanted to ask how many question blocks were you able to manage in a day, since you only studied after work you said? Like one or two blocks of uworld? I feel like im going too slow(barely one block- i just started with questions).. do you have any tips to go faster?? Or does a person automatically go faster once you do enough questions and get the hang of it??

Thanks in advance!! GO PARTY NOW!!!!

Meth makes you go faster! =)

its about quality.
Do 5 questions per day but know them inside out, backwards and inwards.

how can you criticize these 3 great tutors; kudirat, dr Raymond and Sattar pathoma? why not crucify Goljan too?
these are great men unless you have attitude problems

cuz I did not like that for the fact of paying thousands of dollars I have had bellow average teachers, who make mistakes, especially if you are reading from the book and cannot properly read the drug name.
It is to embarrass yourself only.

You might like it - it is your subjective opinion.

...and so I got mine.

btw, it was Goljan and Goljan only, whose pics were on the real exam and whose "diver", "anorectic wife" and kidney explanations appeared for me on my exam.

maybe it will be Kudrath and Sattar on yours.

Despite any arguments, I wish you do well with whatever recourse works better for you.

I dont doubt goljan. i meant horrible meaning overkill for step 1 prep only. rapid review is more for medschool including 3rd and 4th years.

yeah im surprised at your disrespect towards these teachers. you probably didn't pay much attention in class. no one here cares what you think lol
