Arrow 226/82 on Step 1; Different perspective

UWORLD random timed - 75%

NBME 7 the day before the exam - 243

So you're probably wondering how my NBME and UWORLD scores can be that, but my Step 1 score be a lot lower... Well, I DIDN'T SLEEP!.. For months I was sleeping during the day (waking up when the sun is down) and studying at night (or early mornings, however you want to look at it) when everybody is sleeping and I have no distractions, I slowly started to fix my sleeping schedule the closer I got to the exam however.. About a week before my exam I was waking up about 9-10 am, but the thing is on my exam day I would have to wake up at 5 am to get to my 7 am appointment in another city.. I tried to wake up earlier but I just wasn't able to while also trying to study the way I do

So the night before my exam I tried to sleep at 9 pm so I can wake up at 5 am.. I ended up rolling in my bed for hours and not falling asleep until I finally started to get tired at about 3-4 am.. So I slept an hour or 2 and then had to get up and get ready to hit the road.. As you can imagine, pretty much pulling an ``all nighter`` and then writing a 7 hour exam is tough, and frankly not a good idea lol.. I had already pushed back my eligibility period and I was on the last day so it was either do the exam or pay another $760 and I chose to just write it.. (I met a girl during this period and spent a lot of time on her when I should of been studying which caused me to extend, I won`t get into that though )

The exam was a blur for the most part because of my mental fatigue but the first block was the toughest by far, I had a TON of behavioral science questions.. I think I had more behavioral than biochem, pharm, and anatomy COMBINED, behavioral has always been my worst subject but I managed to get a star lol, don`t know how the hell I managed that .. The questions are not as carefully thought out as the UWORLD questions, some of them are just sloppy and unclear to be honest.. I had 1 question that was word for word from my NBME 7 exam, but the questions are nothing like the NBME`s, a lot of the NBME questions are 2 or 3 lines, I don`t know how they correlate so well with the Step to be honest.. They`re nothing alike I felt.. But still DO AT LEAST ONE because they are known to correlate!

I`m not happy with this score, I know I could of done much better (I was aiming for 235+) but hey things happen so I`m just going to try and move on and not make the same mistakes on Step`s 2 and 3.. I was doing well in my preparations which means that I do know my information, that gives me some comfort

So my most important tip is GET A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP! No matter how well you know the information, if you`re not at your optimum mental shape on exam day you won`t perform to the best of your abilities!!!

Thanks .. I only did UWORLD once.. I think doing one is enough, I would not have had time to do both.. FA+UW only? I used those 2 and the Kaplan LN + Videos, and for Path I used Goljan Audios and RR..

If you only have a month left then yes FA+UW would be the way to go

Honestly I would say yes, all of my exam questions on anatomy could have been answered just from FA and UW..

By the way if anybody is interested.. The NBME 7 question that was on my exam was the Delta D/free energy change question where it was asking for the Delta D value and what direction the reaction would proceed

Btw I can try and list down some questions that were on my exam.. I don't know if I'm allowed to do that but if the admins give me the green light I will try and recall as many questions as I can

Hi... you cannot post questions but you can tell what topics were high yield.... like DIT gives stars to the topic... like that.... ex. coronary angio images are HY etc.

I think that will be helpful if you could do that.... TIA

Hmm I guess I can try and recall what was high yield but the thing is every exam is different.. My sister wrote it on the same day and hers was completely different.. Would of been easier if I gave questions, I obviously don't remember them word for word but I can give the main points and a few of the choices

hey congratulations!! you still got a nice score.. may be less than you were expecting but its okay.

I have the exact same problem as you. I mean i have never been able to sleep before an exam. Thats how anxious n insomniac i am. Do you think i should take zolpidem the night before the exam? I really want to sleep for at least 8hrs and take the exam with a fresh minf but im scared i may nt feel asleep even with zolpidem and get drowsy the whole next day. LOL

Anyone tried a sleeping-aid bfr the exam? please let me knw ur experience

I have never taken a sleeping pill in my life so I'm not sure how that will work out lol.. I couldn't sleep not really because of me being anxious, I was a little anxious though but it was because my body wasn't adjusted to sleeping that early.. I didn't sleep that early in months

Try to fix your sleeping schedule as early as possibly

Like I said every exam is differnt so I can't really say.. But for mine Behavioral Science questions were HY, the ethics/doctor-patient relationship q's, like a kid coming to you with a problem and what you would do the help him etc.. I had like 10 of them

Didn't have too many CT scans and such, maybe 1 heart beat question where I had to listen..

I'll try and think of more later, I have to go right now..
