A 20-year-old woman is admitted to the hospital, having lost consciousness. Her breath has a fruity odor. The respiratory rate is 35 breaths/minute, and the blood glucose level is 800 mg/dL. Which of the following enzymes is the most likely cause of the fruity odor?

a) Acetyl-CoA carboxylase
b) HMG-CoA synthase
c) Hormone-sensitive lipase
d) Hydroxymethylglutaryl (HMG)-CoA reductase

HMG coA synthase, since it's the only enzyme I could associate with ketogenesi.. Still HmG CoA lease would have been better choice

agree...HMG coA lyase would be a better answer....since HMG coA synthase common in ketogenesis and cholesterol synthesis pathways

HMG-CoA synthase, the others answers are not related with diabetic ketoacidosis (synthesis of ketone bodies)

Correct answer is b) HMG-CoA synthase

HMG-CoA synthase catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the generation of ketones, which produce the fruity odor.
