Smile Stepper888 Step 1 Experience - 254

Okay guys so heres my experience...

Total preparation time : 7 months

Here's how I went about it :

Started off with with my first read from Kaplan:
Read all the Kaplan books once except the pathology book. Used Goljan for pathology instead. The first read took me 2 and a half months...

After the first read I read First aid once.. this helped me a lot and I would recommend that u guys do the same.. this is because after the first read ure normally lost and u dont remember a lot of stuff that you've read.. by reading first aid at this time u consolidate the things u learned from kaplans and start to feel more confident about the whole thing.. first aid took me around 20 days...

after this I started my 2nd read from kaplans.. once again i read all the books except the patho book and substituted that with the Goljan pathology book.. I did videos for pharmacology and anatomy (except the neuroanatomy videos, which are useless)... this took me 2 months..

The kaplans took me around 10 days/book in my first read and around 6-7 days/book in my second read. Goljan patho took me 20 days to finish.

After this I did first aid again. This time in 15 days.. in the next 5 days I reviewed first aid once more!

Time for Questions:
I started with Kaplan qbank so I could get an idea about the type of questions before i went onto uworld...
I did around 200 questions from every qbank book except the pharma and micro book. PLEASE DONT WASTE URE TIME ON QBANK pharma and micro. they test useless concepts and demoralize u. I gave a total of 10 days to kaplan qbank and did as many questions as i cud do. Reading the explanations at this point is much more important than scoring well... dnt even bother looking at ure score at this point.. just try to learn..

After this I started uworld...
I did random/timed blocks.... cumulative average was 80% towards the end.. try to learn as much as u can from uworld. uworld really goes a long way in helping u get a good score. add notes onto ure first aid as u read uworld...it took me 23 days to finish uworld..

After this I did first aid once again. this time only in 5 days since I only had 8 days left for my exam ..

GAVE my UWSA exams ...
UWSA-2 Three days before the exam = 265
UWSA-1 Two days before the exam = 262

2 nights before the exam I only slept for around 4-5 hours so that I cud sleep on time the night before the exam..

the day before the exam : I just revised first aid a little... reviewed the pictures from first aid and Goljan.. read the rapid review at the end of first aid. Besides i looked up some common radio slides ...

I slept at around 10 pm...woke up at 7 the next day feeling very fresh... this was primarily because I had forced myself to wake up after 4 hours of sleep the previous day...

Exam Day experience :
the first 4 blocks were easy ! the fifth one was so-so .. the 6th and 7th blocks were very hard plus i was losing concentration... I wasn't thinking properly and i had to pinch myself at times to focus ! The last 2 blocks is where i most probably lost most of my points.

all in all it seemed as if 80 % OF THE EXAM had literally been picked off first aid. DO first aid as many times as u can !!! . 3 times , 4 times, or maybe even 5-6 times if u can. i cant stress enough on this point ! first aid literally has the answer to almost every question !! know and memorize EACH AND EVERY LINE IN FIRST AID !!. having said that u shouldn't only rely on first aid. u need to read kaplans at least twice to make concepts since first aid wont help u in doing that . first aid just gives u very high yield facts that are tested very commonly..uworld was also a major help, overall the exam was a lot easier than uworld and therefore i didnt have much difficulty in doing the questions since i was more used to the harder uworld type questions...qbank is not a great resource to be honest .. the exam questions are very different.. qbank focuses more on the memorization of facts !

I got my result a few weeks back . got 254/88 . i was kinda disappointed with the score since i had always hoped for a score above 260. ... i believe I could've scored better had i not lost focus on the last 2 blocks... but overall i am very thankful to God for helping me throughout this process..

Everyone , literally everyone can get a 99 on step 1 ! all u need is 6 months of dedicated hard work. there's a set pattern of things ure supposed to do and if u follow that pattern 99 out of a 100 times u will be successful !

I wish you all the best of luck !

You should be really proud of your performance man, congratz!

Can I ask how much you were studying per day? Also, were you doing any clinical experience or something along with studying?

You mentioned qbanks format doesn't correlate with the real exam?
Is nbme & uworld close to the exam format?
Goodluck is step2

Congratulations on the amazing score, and thank you for the excellent summary of your experience!
My question to you is, how important was Goljan during the prep? I'm currently on Goljan's second read (Have the exact same schedule as you did). How much did it really help, and how long should I take to finish it? Thanks!

here are some of the the answers to ure questions :

what should i use for behavioural sciences :
I used kaplan for beh. sciences followed by the beh sciences section in first aid. I think it was more than enough ! Practice as many questions as u can.. different scenarios are what u need to learn about and the only effective way of doing that is by doing more questions !

Should i read Goljan ?:
Yes, definitely ! goljan solidifies ure concepts in not only pathology but it also helps u improve ure micro, physio and biochem. It really integrates these 4 subjects very well together ! You can supplement this with goljan audio .. listen to all the audios once atleast. I did half of them cuz of time restraints. It shud take u around 20 days when u read it for the first time and around 15 days when u do it for the second time... dont spend too much time trying to memorize every line CUZ U WNT BE ABLE TO ! just try to make concepts..Besides,Some of the sections like the hematology section(except the rbc disorders) is not very high yield...same goes for the musculoskeletal section and the skin disorders.. they contain too much detail and u can maybe cover these chapters from Kaplan patho instead.

Did you do any nbmes and are the nbmes and uworld better predictors of the actual exam as compared to qbank:

I only did nbme 13. got 250. Almost everyone that i know of got atleast 10 more marks than their nbme 13 result. Its definitely the hardest nbme out there currently. so dont let it demoralize u. I know ppl that have scored 230 on this nbme and end up getting above 245 on the real thing. The nbmes are by far the best predictors of the actual exam out there. Uworld is also good but its def harder than the actual exam, which is actually a good thing since it prepares u very well for the exam. Qbank as i said earlier concentrates more on memorization of facts, so it might only help u in memorizing and learning stuff.

What would u do if u had an another chance to study for step 1 ?:

1.Id do all the goljan audios once, i only did half of them cuz of time constraints.
2.Id do all the nbmes ! do them in offline mode if u have to.
3.I mightve done an extra question bank. The more practice u get the better it is !
4. I would not have read any extra book ! kaplans + goljan + first aid is MORE THAN ENOUGH !

Thumbs Up

Congratulations Stepper888! This is awesome news!! I pray I can do that well... :sorry:

Only one quick question from me... Before studying for the Step students usually take a practice test to determine where they are and to look at their strengths and weaknesses - for example, some do 4 blocks in Kaplan, others 4 blocks in UWorld, etc. Did you take an initial practice test? If so, what was your score THEN, meaning before you started your 7 month study plan for the Step?

Thanks!! That was so not one quick question...lol

Hi Stepper
Congratulations on your achievement, you deserve this.
Thank you very much for the wonderful post. It is just awesome!!!! Your preparation is systematic. Thank you again for an inspirational post.
Just a question, you did each Kaplan book @ 20 days/subject right? So did you go through the videos at the same time and annotate your Kaplan notes?
How can we increase the study pace, is there any secret behind it? (I mean how did you do it, like second read 10 days /subject)
