Unhappy My Step 1 performance is haunting me!!

Hi I know it's awkward to hear something like this from a total stranger but I just can't keep it to myself any longer. I took my Step 1 about a week back and I really felt horrible right after the exam maybe because of 1) exam difficulty 2) I was only able to sleep for 2 hours the night before despite my tremendous efforts in fixing my sleeping pattern. Well exam difficulty mainly stems from the usual expected WTF questions and those simple concepts that are asked in such a twisted way where you are always down to two final choices. I had trouble pacing myself in the exam and was not able to review my marked items (around 10+) for the majority of blocks even though I did Uworld and NBME all under standard timed pace. And now having to wait for around 2 more weeks is making me crazy...

I know it's normal for many to feel depressed after the exam but this is just haunting me. I've been getting vivid nightmares about it! Seems like a case of PTSD lol but maybe the experience WAS traumatic afterall...

My NBME 10 days before the exam was 226 and 4 days before was 245 and my UWSAs were 242 and 254. But now it all seems like crap because I'm googling about exam experiences and I've read cases where the NBMEs were good but something just went wrong with the exam itself.

I was originally hoping for a 240+ but right now I'd be totally happy if I were to get a 220+. Was anybody here able to sleep awfully the night before but still get a good score?

I'd just like to vent out, but I guess my most important advice for all is to fix your sleeping pattern as early as possible and religiously stick to it!! I just hope my preparation wasn't put to waste just bec of sleep or lack thereof!!

Hey thanks... really appreciated. I do hope it all turns out that way. This 3-week wait is even harder than the hellish exam itself. I feel like everyone but me had a perfect exam experience.

You weren't able to sleep before exam? Me too. If you got 226 in NBME 10 days before exam I think you'll get 230+ in the real exam. Just relax that's the way it is after the test. After my exam all the wrong answers including the stupid ones i made all popped to my mind. I felt like i'd done a major suck up in the exam. But after 3 weeks of waiting the email came. I took a deep breath and a glass of water before checking the result. And wheew...it turned up great! Better than expected actually.

hey...i am in the same boat...waiting for my step 1 results...the moment my exam was over i was relaxed and happy but a few hrs later i was checking what i had marked and seriously i had no idea i had done soo many silly mistakes ( especially in last two blocks)... i always thought i'll catch upon all the things that i had missed during the preparation months after d exam, but all i am doing now is freaking out...right now i have no idea what my score report is going to b like...so the best thing for u to do is to AVOID READING USMLE EXPERIENCES...because the exam is over and we cant change anything now ..so,hope for the best and party hard..i think after so many months, we owe this to ourselves..plus wid such good good scores u dont need to worry at all..i only got 214 in nbme 13 a week before exam and still gave the exam..good luck

Thank you jezmd. Finally someone who wasn't able to sleep as well! Congrats on the results, though! Salute.

Oh and... I think I'll have a shot of tequila rather than a glass of water before I open my results. Lol

Thanks aruna, welcome aboard the horror boat. Yes, I stopped googling those darn exam experiences... I'm trying my best to just shove the experience to the back of my mind. Because every time I recall all my silly mistakes I get an inch closer to going crazy

I hope everything turns out well for the both of us.

Thank you guys, you are all great. More power to us all.

well, let me tell you, its not that they do not test the tiny little details of KLN, THEY DO! I got a question about MIC (minimum inhibitory conc) and another one about Mixed lymphocyte reaction!!! .. i hope i got them right though! And i got like 3-4 bone questions!! ughhhhh ... that too histopathology slides and i had no clue what they were showing. And i thought i was good with the murmers but in the exam i had a hard time with the audio. They did not even give enough clues in the stem!

To be very honest, i dont think i could have performed any better if i had prepped differently. the hard questions were hard, stuff we have never seen before. Of course i can recall about 5 very STUPID mistakes already, i could have avoided that.

And yeah one thing i strongly advise. I think it is a good idea to read the last line first. It really gives u an idea abt the question and u know what to look for in the stem! sometimes u dont even need to read the lab values n stuff.

Good Luck Buddy!!

@LYSOGENY - when did u take the exam? And when do you expect the score? I took mine on the 30th i dont know when i should expect it!

Hey numbndumb...what do mean by difficult questions in molecular bio? Were they all complicated applications of simple concepts or would you say they required a more indepth knowledge?

I agree with numbndumb! There were a lot of easy questions but were detailed, things that you tend to overlook in your review! Of course a good review includes going to the nitty gritty and believe me, I tried my best to cover everything but the exam just surprises you out of nowhere and then you realize where you left out! That's how silly stupid mistakes happen! It's impossible to cover everything so I think there's nothing that I could undo from my review, too, and the best thing you can do is cover as much as you can and let it be.

I took my exam 20th, I thought it would be exactly 3 weeks but I read on the ECFMG site that it's the earliest WEDNESDAY after 3 weeks. So I'm guessing on Aug 15 instead of 10 (grrrrr).

and the night before the result damn!! i couldnt sleep properly and after result i couldnt sleep either because i was so busy in recieving in congratulations from friends and family.

Good luck for the result to both of you lysogeny and numbndumb..
and donot worry about the result excessively.

Post-exam stress disorder! Haha, I think that deserves a placement in the upcoming DSM-V, thankyouverymuch to ECFMG!

I will follow your tip, I'm going to start collecting stuff for CK... at least that's productive.

My score report just arrived!! Not as bad as I expected!! You guys were right!!

It's actually a week earlier than expected and 2 days earlier than the actual 3 weeks!

To those who are also painfully and eagerly waiting, good luck as well! Things can't get worse than your expectations! Proven!

Hi guys, sorry to reply just now!

I got a 238... i know it's not much of a brilliant score in this forum, but i'm happy that I got out alive!! Woooooh, I really felt I escaped death!

Thank you really guys for the support you gave during my gloomy days. Now I hope this brings comfort to someone nervously waiting for their score in the future!

@numbndumb: All the best, dude! it'll all turn out fine.

Congrats on your score!
Btw, what do you mean by "fixing your sleeping pattern"?
I don't quite understand!

Thank you!

By "fixing your sleeping pattern," I meant if your circadian rhythm is disturbed, try adjusting your body clock as gradually as possible before your exam date!

While studying, if you need more time to cover more or unfinished topics, it is better to wake up early than sleep late!

I believe that is more ideal than medications. Plus no worry for hangover or excessive grogginess during the exam.

For the most of my review I've been sleeping at 5am and waking up at 12 noon. And it was really a problem when the time came to fix it. (I tried starting a month before the exam)

I only took diphenhydramine as a sleep aid during my "fix period" but it failed me just the night before my exam.

That's why I might resort to REAL sleep aids (like zolpidem) for step 2 CK, i've learned my lesson now. That is if all else fails.

Good luck on your prep!

---

@koolkillerz - yep I will pray for you guys! Good luck on your prep too, you can do it! Mine was not a fairytale story but I'm really glad I made it.

@numbndumb - Yes keep your fingers crossed! Keep us posted!
