Default correct answer

The answer is c) Failure of the cochlea and spiral ganglia to develop

The rubella virus crosses the placenta and causes various types of malformation, depending on the stage of embryonic development at which infection occurs. Interruption of the Pax-2 gene at 8 weeks’ gestation by the virus results in malformation of the cochlea and spiral ganglia, resulting in congenital deafness.
