Smile Numbndumb scored 255. Experience & advise

Hello everyone. I've been waiting fot this day for ever. To write my own exam experience.

I wanna thank everybody in this forum. You guys were always there for me.

I am an IMG, graduated in 2010.

Total Prep Time: 1 year with lots of long breaks (bad idea though!)
Studied about 6-8 hours a day, except the 2nd to last month(not last) about 10-12 hrs a day.

Materials Used:

Kaplan Lecture Notes and Videos for all subjects except pathology for which I used Goljan RR with audio (cover to cover twice)
First Aid (about 5-6 times cover to cover)
DIT 2011 (did it once, very non-seriously, about 4 months before the exam)
Uworld (all the questions twice. Marked and incorrect questions thrice)

Self Assessments:

NBME 12 : 254 (1 month before the exam)
UWSA 1: 260 (3weeks before the exam)
UWSA 2: 265 (2 weeks before the exam)

I did all other NBME's except 1,2 offline and got about 15-25 questions wrong in each.

How I studied
I started my prep is August 2011. Initially it was very slow and non serious. I watched Kaplan videos in the morning and read the same chapters the same day.

For pathology, I used Golijan RR with audio. Now honestly speaking, I do not like that book. It's like an outline, i hated it but everyone recommended it so i thought it was a MUST. But if u ask me now, i dont think it is because some friends of mine who read pathology from Kaplan also scored high, so its upto you.

It took me about 4.5 months to finish my first read. Then i went on to my 2nd read. I read KLN and Golijan cover to cover again but this time after i finished each chapter I read it from FA and added some points there which i thought were important. I also did UW subjectwise offline. Anytime i came across something new in UW, i noted that down in my FA .. but later i made a separate note of UW only. Very important to do this guys. UW is very very high yield.

After my second read, I had to take a huge break due to some unfavourable circumstances at home. This is when i did DIT. I only watched the video, didnt use the workbook. I used to watch like 1 lecture/day because i could not study and i did not want to be off track completely. If you have time, I think DIT is woth doing because there are some things I will never forget .. thanks to DIT.

So my break was over, back to books. I started reading FA only. but anytime i came across something I did not understand, i referred to my KLN.

Then I subscribed to UW online. I had already done it once offline but it was an older version so I wanted to do the latest stuff and also time myself.

1 month before the exam i took NBME 12 online and scored 254. Then in the last month i did all other NBME's offline(except 1 and 2) and kept revising FA.

For heart sounds and radiographs, i used various web-sites.

And yeah, for those of you who have sleep/anxiety problems, I took zolpidem the last 4 nights before the test!! .. Well dont take them unless u absolutely cant sleep without them. But if you are like me, its better to get a drug induced 5-6 hrs of sleep than no sleep at all.

EXAM DAY
I was staying as a guest as somebody's place in s strange new city, because there is no prometric centre where i live. So I was a little anxious about finding the centre and all. So i left early.

I reached an hour early so they let me start early. The prometric people were very nice.

I took a break after every block and also ate something. I had about 10-15 minutes of break time left in every block except the 6th block .. where i was left with like 30 seconds. I think I was really tired then and was losing focus. At the end of the day I was left with 50minutes of break time!!

Well about the questions,

Boiostats and Behav Sci: extremely weird! Most of which did not come from KLN or FA or UW or NBME's!!

Genetics & Molecular Bio: extremely weird again. But i kept telling myself.. these must be experimental questions. lol

Everything else was OKAY .. the pictures weren't really all that easy to identify. I got 2 audio questions and they didnt give much clues in the stem, so i had a hard time with those too.

I recognized several questions. Some from UW some from UWSA and some from NBME's.

I DID NOT revise any marked questions, because I knew i would remember the questions if i saw them again and again and I wouldn't be able to focus in the next block. I think I did a good thing!

AFTER THE EXAM, i wasnt sure how i did! Was waiting eagerly for my score. Got 255/88
I'm so happy now.

I wish you all good luck for the exam. And 1 thing, yes you DO have to work very very hard but you all can do it. Its not as big a deal as people make it sound.

I hope i didn't make this too long and boring. ANything you need to know, please feel free to ask.

hey thanks. well about NBME's, I think It's a must to do 7,11,12 and 13 either online or offline. Older ones are more straightforward but you DO learn a lot of new stuff. SO go for them if u have time.

ABout Uworld, if you have already done it twice, then just do the notes. Otherwise u can do the questions too.

Good Luck!

well it depends. I think the perfect time to start is with your 2nd read of Kaplan or watever your primary source it. The questions are integrated so it's kind of useless trying it before u have finished your 1st read of all the subjects. Good Luck!

Hey thanks. I did a bit of Kaplan Qbank with my 1st read of kaplan notes. Honestly, i don't think it's worth the time. I would not advise you to do them. As far as questions are concerned UW is gold. And NBME's are good too!

Hey I did uworld offline the first time so of course it was subject-wise.

Second time, i subscribed and did it online in random timed mode( this is the best, helps you remember stuff, and makes you confident). Since I was doign it for the 2nd time, my average score was 91% but that doesnt really count.

I think you should use UW as a learning tool and forget the percentiles. When you're ready, take an NBME to see where you are.

nope i didnt not type the notes. They were all handwritten. some in FA pages and some in a separate notebook that I had made.
I made notes of the new stuff I camne across, i mean the stuff i had never seen before, regardless whether i got it correct or incorrect.

I had made notes system-wise. Like i divided my notebook resp. system, cardiology, micro etc etc. And i read these notes right after finishing the respective chapter from FA. On the last day before my exam, i read all the notes.

well it depends how many times you are planning to do UW and we usually can't decide that until we have started doing the questions. I dont think you should wait till october to start it. Why not start it in september?

No i dont think you should use any other qbank. I used NBME's as a qbank in the last month of my prep. You can always do that if you have time.

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention there were some werid cell biology questions too. LOL ... plain histo, they dont really ask much, they ask histopathology. i got several bone histopathology pictures, i have no idea what they were, some cancers. ughh, i always hated histo too. no i didnt use any histo books. I read it from KLN only once and i absolutely hated it!

FA and UW are almost enough for anatomy. Although you can expect some WTF gross anatomy questions on muscles, nerve supply etc. LOL.. don't bother with those.

Congrats on the amazing score!
Would you recommend Goljan Audio? I'm done with second read, on FA now and then UW. But still don't want to leave anything out. Thanks and congrats again!

No i dont think you should use any other qbank. I used NBME's as a qbank in the last month of my prep. You can always do that if you have time.
Thank you so much for the reply...... But is it okay if I start world without second read..... That's what I was thinking

I bought them at a bookstore.(the pirated version :P) .. if you dont have tha in your country, you can try downloading them, if the download sites are not blocked there..hehe

Hey I used KLN and FA for both of these. For micro, i think FA with UW are actually more than enough for both of these, but you might have torefer to KLN for the first 2 crappy chaperts of pharma(dynamics and kinetics!)

hey i didnt really get you buddy, but I don't advise anyone to do Kaplan Qbank, i think its totally useless. But thats just my opinion.

And about UW, do the newest possible version. First I did the 2008 version offline and it had like only 1800 questions. later i did it online and came to know that there are 2150 questions. Plus you get some practice with audio questions if you do it online.

what do think about Kaplan videos ? who deserve to watch?
THANX
Well, i have not seen Kaplan's or BRS's patho books but im pretty sure they are sufficient. BRS is great I hear.

For physio, i found the videos really helpful. I think they are worth watching. You can skip Endo and GIT if you want.

OH yeah i forgot to mention I also used BRS physio but only for CVS,respi and AP,muscle contraction etc chapters. I read this towards the end of my prep, as i was having trouble with pathophysio questions. and It really helped.

Well i found all the kaplan videos useful, even micro and immuno. but its upto you. Most people say you can skip micro. goodluck!

Hey goljan audios are awesome but if you've already read the book twice, you probably dont need to listen to them. The audio just helps you understand whats in the text. I hated the book so I listened to the audio first and it encouraged me to study.

Good Luck

Yes you can do that. But make sure you have read FA at least once before starting UW. Because you will find most of the answers in that book!!

If you're doing it offline, read a specific sucject frm KLN and FA then do that subject's questions from UW.

If you're doing it online, then do random, timed mode. DO like 2 blocks a day and then read KLN/FA for the rest of the day.

Good Luck

Na, I think it more has to do with the type of patients you'll have with that type of score as a future plastic surgeon.

My background in all the subjects except pathology was poor. I mean I went to Med School in South Asia and the whole system is totally different. So Step 1 was kind of like a starting another Med school! LOL

I dont remember a lot of biochemistry questions, meaning either i didnt get a lot of biochem questions or I didnt have problems with them. I remember about 3-4 weird questions though. They showed this chemical structure(i guess PIP or smthing) with a lot of labelled bonds and asked which bond had to be cleaved to make IP3 and DAG..... and all i could think of was JAmes Bond. LOL.
There was one about trans fats and cis fats with a graph showing their effects on VLDL and HDL
I think i had 2 questions on familial hypercholesterolemia, 1 question about Vitamin A overdose. That's all I can remember buddy!!

no dont think about any other books. KLN and FA is all we can do. Just becasue they ask weird questions doessnt mean we go around looking for weird books
may be they were experimental questions.. who knows

ahha they do repeat some recent questions i heard. may be they do.

Abt the murmurs, i answered 1 of them as a "normal finding" because i really didnt know what it was. lol
The other one i guessed was probably AS.. but i wasnt sure of that one either.

Dont worry, u'll get a good score im sure. See we both had weird questions

Awesome score!! Congrats

How many Q did you mark per block? How many so called wtf kinda Qs?

Me doing like 78% on online UW done with 45% of it, annonating my FA . had done few Qs from offline apart path, physio, pharmac before. got test on 2nd wk of oct. FA started with 2nd read

havent taken online NBME or UWSA till now. Last offline NBME 6 was 163/200. Can you suggest how can I improve my score?

I think you should use UW as a learning tool and forget the percentiles. When you're ready, take an NBME to see where you are.

hiii!thanks for ur suggestion
I started doing uworld &didnt study first aid but studying it simultaneously while doing uworld, shall i continue d same way r should i complete FA &do uworld?plz help me

I think i marked 5-12 questions per block. But I did not review them even though i had a lot of time remaining because i didnt want to see them again and again and get stressed out.

WTF kind of questions .. i'd say may be about 4-5/block .. but block 6 was crazy for me. i think i marked abt 15 questions.

Well about improcing your score, just keep doing UW and FA and take an NBME by the end of this month so that u can prepone or postpone your test if you want to without paying the extra fees

Good luck!

Thank you! .. I found NBME 11 easier than 12, although i got the same number of questions wrong in both of them. But somehow i feel like 12 is a better predictor! Take it and see, dont rely on the UWSA score.

Good luck!

Heyy.. now first of all relax because we all feel like we screwed up after the exam. so not to panic.

Well i cant really say anything abt NBME score because i didnt do 11 and 13 online. However, i did do them offline. NBME 13 was very hard for me and i would say it probably underpredicts your score. But thats only my opinion.

Good Luck!!
