Default What type of response did the physician use?

A factory worker who is recovering from back surgery tells his physician, “I thought I’d be able to work by now. The bills are piling up and I’m going crazy sitting around the house.” The physician responds, “I can see why you’re frustrated. You have always worked hard and taken care of your family, and recently you have not been able to.” The physician’s statement is an example of what type of response?

a) Clarification
b) Confrontation
c) Facilitating response
d) Paraphrasing
e) Legitimization

Default correct answer

The answer is e) Legitimization

Legitimization/Validation affirms patients’ emotional responses as being understandable for their circumstances.

as for C - A facilitating response encourages a patient to elaborate. For example, the physician might say, “Tell me more about that.”
