China How Chinese Med Grad got 235/84

Before I start all praises to God Honestly my hard work would have been of no use without His blessings

BACKGROUND: I am a Chinese Medical Graduate and like most of the people who go to China for medical studies, I hardly studied during my med school days too. It was only in my final year of med school that I started to study cuz I realized I had to clear my home country's licensing exam to get the medical license to work at home.

MATERIALS USED:
KLN & videos once
FA a million times
UW once completely but the 2nd time I couldn't do everything
DIT.

PREPARATION: I took about 10~12 months to prepare for the exam but with a lot of interruptions. Initially I was also working at a local hospital. Last 4-5 months I studied for about 10-12 hours a day.

I started off with KLN + videos.. went really slow with that.. Now I wish I had done the videos at 1.5X speed and saved some time. I think I took somewhere around 5-6 months to do that. Which I think was a big mistake I made. In my defense I can only say that I was working at that time
I suggest you watch the videos and go thru KLN once within 2-3 months max. Anyway, after that my real prep started i.e FA + UW. I must have done FA atleast 6-7 times. I read every word of FA and UW and made sure I had the important points of UW noted down on my FA.

After finishing FA twice I did my first NBME. In all I did 2 NBMEs

NBME 7: 221 (On june 20th)
NMBE 13: 225 (On July 19th)
FREE 150: 85%(On Aug 8th)

STEP 1: 235/84 (On August 9th)

I know a lot of you have questions about DIT. It did not help me in anyway but then some others say it did wonders to them. I took NBME 7 before DIT and NBME 13 after DIT, so I did not find any difference. I personally feel it is overrated. The guy just reads out FA and says a couple of extra points. Do it only if you got time. Definitely not a must!

EXAM EXPERIENCE: Definitely doable. Stay away from all those who say the exam is tough. They are losers. Honestly I was just an average student in school. Cant say much about med school cuz I hardly studied.

1st block did not go well for me as I was just getting into the groove. Rest of them were fine except for the last one cuz I was completely exhausted by the time I started the last block.

For the exam I took a lot of snickers, Red bull and a veg sandwich from subway. Initially I was having a can of Red bull after each block but after the 4th block I started having palpitations.. Seriously I could hear my heart beat fast, fortunately it did not last long.. So go easy on red bull.

Phew step 1 was a long and tiring journey. I definitely have to thank my Girlfriend for being there for me. She supported me throughout and understood that I did not have time to give her

Again, it's all because of ALLAH. After the exam i just felt like how I felt after the NBME's so I was expecting a score in 220s and hoping for a score over 230s. It is only cuz of Allah i actually got my target score.

Questions are welcomed I would love to help you guys cuz I was helped a lot by those who took the test before me

I graduated from Nanjing medical University!

My advice to you is simple.. Just concentrate on FA and UW.. Honestly I did not remember a word of KLN before the exam.. it was only cuz of FA and UW I got 235.

Yes, the exam is very doable.. I felt it was easier than UW. As in, in UW all the questions are of the same difficulty level. But on the real exam you'll get about 30% easy one line questions, 40-50% medium difficulty level questions and 20% hard questions.. those 20% of hard questions make the difference between 230 and 260!

I did not do Kaplan Qbank so I cannot comment on that sorry. But I blindly trusted my friends who took the exam before me and they just asked me to do UW.

I'd definitely recommend you do UW twice. Cuz the exam is just like UW, infact I found it to be a little easier than UW..

Good luck with your prep

PS: I am not from Pak

Walaikum Salam.. It is very important to do UW online. Even if it costs some money, it is def worth it. Dont read too much from what you score on you UW, use that only as a learning tool. But make sure you do UW completely atleast once. If your exam is on sep 22nd, do NBME at the earliest to know where you stand and take it from there.

Dont get too worried about anatomy, you are not gonna get many questions from anatomy and out of the few questions you get, 50% of the anatomy questions are weird :P
KLN covers anatomy well. So do that and move on. Dont spend much time on anatomy..
Neuroanatomy.. yes! you will get quite a few questions but FA covers most of it

I was scoring somewhere around 68-70% during my first pass of UW.
But dont worry too much about the scores. Just use it as a learning tool.
But make sure u note down all the imp points from UW to your FA.

That's so great for you! All your hard work paid off. Congratulations!

I have done FA once, and am now working on UW. I have my exam on Oct 18th. Do you think there is alot of difference between FA and KLN?

Thanks, and congrats once again.

For genetics, Immuno I feel FA is sufficient. For Biochem it is imp to know the subject.. so go thru KLN with videos and then concentrate on FA. Cuz you would get a few tricky questions from Biochem so it is imp for you to know the subject well.

Good luck

Hmm KLN has got everything needed and more, very difficult to review all the subjects in a week or 10 days on the other hand FA has got all the high yield facts. Each and every sentence of FA can be a question so you cant ignore a word from FA. But if you are confident of studying KLN well and retaining all the facts there, then you dont need FA at all.

Walaikum salam.. Always do FA along with UW cuz FA has got all the high yield points and only if you do it UW you'd know how to apply those points that you memorize.

That's the reason I said that for biochem you need to read KLN well before you do FA. For immuno FA has everything you need to know and most of immuno is pure memorization like all the CD markers, types of hpersenstivity reactions n stuff. But you should do a quick read of KLN before you go thru FA. I only meant you should not get bogged down with KLN, not ignore KLN completely.

It's really a big job you have done.
I am also from China, from Zhengzhou University but I am in my final year now.
I have one question from you and I am so much worried about this but I believe that you guys will help me out.
As all of Chinese grad knows that in China out last year is internship year and we can do our internship anywhere in the world so I came back here in USA to do my internship and I just started last month in Houston but I have heared that of you wanna do residency in USA you must do your clerkships in your medical school otherwise it will be a. Big trouble as you guys know that in our 4 years we haven't done any clerkships we only do practical or clerkships or internship in our final year and our transcripts will also show that same thing in the end rahy we did our clerkships/internship in last year.so please tell me that I should go back to china to compete these clerkships/internship or I can do it anywhere and when during Step 1 reg they ask for Clerkship what I should mention there?? Please please reply me.

I am also an old graduate from Zhengzhou ,2006. It doesn't matter where you do ur internship, its ok..You have to go back, take the graduation test.and then when the degree is issued. You can apply for USMLE.you will have to send them all your documents.

Make sure you officially translate them into english.I know they give u the one in English. But the one which will be issued in Chinese must be in english.

By the way is Yu Laoshi and Zhong Laoshi still there?

I m sure Ms.Susan is still there cos I talked to her the other day.

Walaikumsalam..
If what you are doing in the US now is considered as internship by your university then, you are actually at advantage because you will get your degree from the university saying that you have completed your mandatory 1 year internship and since you are doing it in the US it will also count as US clinical experience which will work in your favor when you apply for match.

Good luck

Hey,
I think your fear is somewhat correct. I am not discouraging you but few months before i read a topic in this forum (was not able to find now). It stated that New york state have some kinda rule that they will consider only 3 months of elective in US or any other country.
Remaining internship you have to do from your medical school. Please i am quoting this again- i just read about this thing so thought or sharing with you. So try to get some more details about this. May be i am wrong.
You can post a topic in "USCE and electives" sub forum asking about more information. Specifically from sabio, step taker and other forum staff. They are kinda most experienced guys and can give your genuine advice.

Considering what koolkiller88 says I suggest u call ECFMG and speak to them about this as nobody wud be in a better poistion to make it clear than those working there. The people there are very nice and always respond.

I will add my 2 cents to ur answer. I am also a chinese graduate, got my degree this year, and we don't have anything mentioned in the transcript about the internship,it's just stated that i have completed 5 years in this institution. And about clerkship as far as i know it's mandatory for the US students to do their clerkship b4 graduation, and for us (IMGs) alternative to clerkship we have to do observship or externship before step 2 CS in any hospital recognized by ECFMG. So don't worry about that,go ahead for ur step 1 and after that do your observeship in any hospital in the US, that will be counted with ur transcripts.

I am not done yet..I have to take Step 1 in december. But yes I have done registeration.

Because I am so much worried that when I will send the form 183 to my uni to sign and send back to Ecfmg do u think they will cooperate??
When You send the form 183 or 186, You inform Ms.Susan and she will take care of it...But I think they charge about 100Yuan for sign and seal and then 300 or something yuan to send it through DHL...It would be better if you send it to someone (your friend) in Zhengzhou and let him take to the office.and then they will send it to ECFMG.Make sure you send it with Fedex...Cos chinese mail is very slow.

I should talk to whom?who will help me in this process because us l not in china I am in USA for internship ???

Talk to Ms.Susan..If you want her email address...Send me a PM.

And can you please tell me that from where you did your internship?and in the end when zhengzhou uni gave you transcripts and certificates did they mention on that that you have done for somewhere else or it shows that you did form zhengzhou university??
I did my Internship Half in Pakistan and then half in China...But its nowhere mentioned that where I did it.So don't worry about...It doesn't matter where u do it and neither does ECFMG care.

Where r u?
I am US citizen from Pakistan and now in US.

Thank you
You welcome.

Hope that helps...The answers in bold red.

1. Dont start FA yet. Do KLN once completely and then start FA cuz without the basic understanding of the subject you will find FA very difficult to understand.

2. I must have done FA about 6-7 time or more in 5 months because after you do it twice or thrice you almost know everything that's there in the book. Towards the end of my prep I would do FA in less than 10 days. Although I must admit it took me sometime to finish the first read of FA. So dont worry, the more you do, easier you will find to finish the book in your subsequent attempts.
Make sure you know FA inside out cuz almost everything on the exam is from FA.

3. I had all the important points from UW on my FA. It is very important to do both together cuz FA is just high yield facts and UW helps you to use those facts.

4. Cant really comment on usmlerx as I never used that. But all I know is that UW is a must, do the rest only if you got time.

5. Honestly, I found the exam to be easier than UW, same as NBME. The exam will have a good share of easy questions. If you answer all those easy questions you'll get to 220, above that depends on how many of those hard questions you get right.

Hope I have answered all your questions!

Should we do Kaplan Qbank along with the first read of Kln LN? Because I've heard a lot of people here saying we should practice questions with the first read. And I'm not sure if UW is subject based.

Also, where do I download UW offline from?

Hmm.. my prep was a lil different. During my first read, I wanted to know the subject first so I did not subscribe to any online Qbank, cuz KLN + videos used to eat up most of the day and I was sure that If I subscribed Qbanks, the subscription would go waste.
However, you can test yourself by solving Kaplan Qbook just to see if your remember what you learnt and get in the habit of solving questions. Although the questions you come across in the Qbook will not be anything like those you will have on your real exam.

With regard to UW, I strongly suggest you do UW online and do it after your first read of KLN. Do it along with FA.

It wont be a bad idea to go thru a couple of offline UW questions to see what the USMLE questions are like, but RESTRICT TO JUST A FEW QUESTIONS.

Just google and you will find a lot of sites with Offline UW questions. If you still cant find them PM your Skype Id and i'll send them to you.
