Default Why do NK not kill RBCs?

NK cells kill MHC I- lacking cells.
RBCs are not nucleated and do not have MHC I molecules.
So why NK do not kill the RBCs?

Thanks

Nk cell signalling pathways are complex , and not well established. mhc1 is inhibitory signal to nk cell , probably rbcs must be having some other inhibitory signals. Its not tested on step1 coz no1 knows !! dont worry..

Thank you but NK do attack infected RBCs by parasites for example. So how does it differentiate bet the normal and infected RBCs.

I had an mcq which said NK cells attacked the infected RBCs because they lack MHCI !! I said really !! RBCs lack MHC anywhy.... this the reason for my q

Thanks

Oh ! Stupid q bank..

anyways , whenever any cell gets infected , it puts up some foreign antigens and stuff on its surface thats how any immune cells will sense something is going wrong there. on rbc because there is no mhc , nk cells are the only ones that kill em... read that some where don't remember the source ! sorry !

good luck

yes, what dr.nitowl said was true..nk cell signalling pathways are quite complex.....
but, what i know about not attacking self cells lacking MHC-1 is because the cells(like neural tissues, rbc) lack ligands for activating NK cell receptors....so,they can't kill them

some explanation says the self cells have some PAMPs receptors for not activating it.....if you want any other details you can study this

http://faculty.ccbcmd.edu/courses/bi...te/nkcell.html

i hope it helps..
