Default Rapiddo’s Step 1 Experience

239/85

AWESOME GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to start by thanking God for this opportunity to share my experience and also give back to where I have benefited from.
I just have to say a big thanks to everybody on this forum, all the questions and discussions were so important in my step 1 preparation.

Materials used:
First Aid 2011 – 2 times (I started the 3rd read but didn’t conclude it)
Kaplan lecture notes (KLN)
Golgan Rapid review
BRS physiology
Conrad’s Fischer Ethics book
Usmle world

Prep time: January- April –Part time
May – August - Full time studying (Exam on 20th August)
I will start by encouraging everyone preparing for the step 1 that YOU CAN do it no matter how 'not so good' you were in basic medical sciences. I will say I was average while in medical school because a lot of the materials were somewhat abstract then.
The Kaplan lecture notes were really helpful, read them once but had to refer to them during the period of study. In between the first read of KLN, started USMLEWORLD but it didn’t make much of a sense since I had not gone through a lot of the materials. So, I will advise the practice questions (UWORLD) after going through all the materials and having a foundation to build up on.
While using UWORLD, I was making notes in my First Aid for every topic I encountered in UWORLD that wasn’t well covered in FA. This was rather time consuming, but I was very glad I did, because weeks to the exam you want to focus on a concise material (FA with all your annotations).

My practice exams stats:
NBME 12: 219 (4 weeks before exam)
UWSA1: 232 (3 weeks before)
NBME 7: 221(2.5 weeks before)
NBME 13: 233, UWSA2: 252 (both 8 days before exam to see what it will feel like on the exam day)

Exam day Experience
I was a bit nervous, but I just had to encourage myself that I was able and that God was with me.
The exam was somewhat in between the NBMEs and UWorld in length & difficulty, because some were straight to the point like the NBMEs and some were very lengthy. I will say the exam was not too hard and not too simple (in between). There were definitely some tricky questions, some I felt they were to throw one out of balance, for those kinds of questions, I marked them and went back to them afterwards.
After the exam, I felt ‘in between’ after discovering some mistakes here and there.
These 3 weeks felt like forever and I am so glad it is over.
I wish everyone the very best and perfection in all we do.

Thanks.
Quite a lot was covered, FA in my opinion consolidates all the materials, almost every line is important. That means the concept behind every line most be well understood because the questions can be asked in any format.
I will encourage your plan of reading your FA over and over, and pls don't rush over it. Your first read may take a while (cant remember how long it took me right now), but the 2nd read is usually faster cos you are more familiar with the material. It will also be good if you can take an NBME after your first read so that you can know the areas you need to brush up on.

Thank you, hoor.
I went through golgan once, tried a 2nd read but couldn't conclude it, but I kept referring to it when I needed more explanations on a topic.
Yeah,I also listened to the audios. The audios were very helpful too as he emphasizes the high yield materials in the book.
I feel what will determine your 2nd read of KLN is how well you do on practice questions and the time you have for preparation .In my case, I had to go back to read some topics again when I realized I didn't get the concept right.
Also, if you have enough time, a 2nd read may not be a bad idea. For me ,a 2nd read was just for my weak areas because I didn't have the time.

Thanks.
I started with subject wise and then switched to to random after gaining more confidence in all the subjects.
Percentage when i started was around 50% and then I gradually improved to 60-65% ( can't remember the specific percentages but this was the average)
