Smile Pollex September 12th, 2012 Step 1 Exam Experience

hey guys,
i owe this to the forum.
my self assessments predicted a 220-224 score for me,so going into the exam my confidence wasn't flying high.
the exam was much easier and manageable than i expected, the questions in my opinion are very similar to UW,i took 2 nbmes, Uworld was much more similar to the exam...in fact 2-3 exam Qs were copied exactly from SA2...

Length of the exam is not a issue...i took breaks just to be on the safer side couple of times....after the 1st block you are fine tuned to way the questions are asked..its smoother then/
1 question was repeated twice, once in block 1 once in block 4.
Goljan slides covered almost every picture i saw on the exam.
80% of the exam concepts tested, can be found in FA.
experimental questions avg 2/block... weird graphs 4-5 in total.
as my predictions suggest i didn't prepare that well..or am just not that smart ....but there is a hype regarding the difficulty of the exam...stay calm, you start to get a feeling of familiarity 10-15 questions into the exam.
i made a few silly mistakes,confused a few definitions..all in all...its doable.
i'll head to Himalayas this weekend...a much needed break...they say the grass is greener on every side there..if you know what i mean?

Thank you for the wonderful post. How many times did you do FA? Did you write Uworld notes in FA as well?

Hi Pollex,
Just wondering... You mentioned that some Goljan slides were on your exam; can you get the question right without seeing the slide before?
Hope you did great on your exam

Thumbs Up

@Highlander:i did FA 3 times...in my last read,i notes down the page number of pages i would want to look at again a day before the exam...my FA was full of details from Uworld, i converged all the content onto my FA 2011.

@ricko335: pure biochem questions may 3-4 in all...clinical biochem Q 15 or so.
Molecular bio was sparsely test, not more than 4-5 questions, but they were difficult.

@Lpink,tai35:google search "goljan slides",you will find a scribd,com link.
the stem helps a lot to identify the pictures, and most of the time they are classic pictures, can't really miss them.(like smudge cell, auer rods,RS cells, kimmelstien nodels in Glomerules etc)

ADVICE TO ALL USE THE ERRATA FOR FA CORRECT THE MISTAKES,THERE ARE A FEW IMPORTANT CORRECTIONS TO MAKE! didn't mean to yell...but i did it very late, memorized some incorrect facts.

I passed....

Uworld Qbank average: 58%...couldn't go through all incorrect ones, was left with 300 questions in the end.

UWSA 1: 198 (decided to push my exam date by 2 weeks after this)

after finishing FA once again(3rd time)..
NBME 13: 220
NBME 7: 218

UWSA 2: 219

STEP 1 score: 227/82.
behavioral science was in low performance area..
with all the 250s n 270s around...i feel i didn't do too well.
i remember atleast 10 silly mistakes i made in the exam..may be a little stress would have helped..i was surprisingly quite calm in the exam.

with predictions showing that my passing the exam was doubtfull, before the exam i faked the confidence, constantly told myself you have read everything, nothing will surprise you in the exam..and actually nothing did.

i wanted to read a post like this before the exam but couldn't find one...so the intent was do the best i can...and let someone who is in a similar state know that it can be done.
....Himalayas were heaven, checked my result,in a small internet cafe full of israelis..hugged a few stangers,i was very high!

Hey Nice post. Wondering may be you are on your Himalayas trip and must be having fun.
Meanwhile i had a question. How you think about pharmacology part.
Was it heavily tested?
If yes, Then was the MOA or side effects or DOC?

thank you all for the good words.

@kool: pharma is tested a fair amount,MOA and s/e are asked more than DOC.
but only the most common and classic stuff is tested.
pharma and biochem were my weaker subjects,as they require memorization..i am more of understanding rather than cramming...so for these subjects i used flash cards by Lange on my ipod...even Brenner pharma cards are good..had those too..used them when i was travelling,on the crapper, just before sleeping..whenever i could..its safe to say it worked for me.
(thank sevenfingers for this tip)

@rookie: after UWSA1 i wasn't sure what to do? a part of me wanted to just finish it off expecting a miracle on the exam day. spoke to a friend of mine who is ecfmg certified now,she coaxed me to push the exam date and go through FA the 3rd time..and this time i made note of pages i wanted to review again may be a day or 2 before the exam...i made a list of 30-35 pages (cramming stuff),read those on the last day.
after 3rd read, gave nbmes and UWSA2..its suggested some improvement,i felt ready..took the test.

FA alone might not be enough for Behavioral science, add in kaplan notes.

Haha. So I guess the grass really was quite green in the Himalayas. Congrats on your score man. I've been stuck in this Step 1 hellhole for longer than I care to remember. Can't wait to get the monkey off my back and head to the mountains myself.
