Russia Noelani Step 1 Exam Experience

Hi

I took my step 1 on September 22.*

Little bit about me. I'm a 2011 graduate from Russia living in USA for last 10 month.*

First of all. Don't worry. Exam isn't that hard when you know everything and you're used to type of questions on exam. Most of questions are really easy, very strait-forward and sometimes you may think that there is some trick. But about 10% of questions you have to read twice or 3 times or mark to go back to answer.*
Yes, I would say that there was everything, microbiology, immunology anatomy, biostatistics , everything!
*I would say that I expected more biochemistry, but *I had very few questions on that subject. Every block has little bit of everything.*

I would say that for me personally it was hard to think and concentrate 8 hours strait. I did had enough of sleep night before. Woke up at 7:20am*and at*8:00 was at Prometric with 2 sugar free Red bulls, 7 chocolate cookies, one sandwich, water, and chewing gum (in my opinion increases concentration, decreases anxiety and slightly improves cognitive function) that I ate all.*

I took a break after every block for 5-7 mins.*

Each block allowed me to answer *46 questions in 60 min. So I could mark about 5-7 questions each block and had about 3 mins left.*
Only last block was a nightmare! No it wasn't hard.*
I just was too tired. I had 30 sec left but answered even marked questions.*

How did I prepare: well, because of moving to US and family issues my preparation took about 1 year with big gaps. Serious preparation started at May.*

What did I used to prepare:*

Kaplan videos + Kaplan notes 2010. Videos took forever, but I do strongly advice watch them to get an idea about pronunciation, if you're IMG and improve your American English language understanding. It's a long introduction to USMLE, with a lot of unnecessary stuff that you will forget, but it worth it.*
I would say that Kaplan is too much for step 1, some things are too hard and probably could be explained easily, e.g. physiology (especially kidney physiology) in my opinion they made too hard and confused me!*
Must see in Kaplan: is Micro, Biostatistics, pathology. And Conrad's Fisher lectures! He is hilarious!*

First aid: no comments. I read it and was trying to memorize that *book by heart. 3 reads.*
By the way, docs, mnemonic works! I don't know how most people memorize, but mnemonics used in this book are awesome! + create your own! It works!!!*

I used also Case ...*
It always worked for me and I like discussions of particular disease with differential diagnosis.*

I read ones Kaplan med essentials and it helped me... Little... FA more useful. Again, pathology section of each system is too confusing in my opinion.*

I did Kaplan Qbook *(too hard), FA Q&A ( too easy), did UW once in June when I decided that I'm not ready to take an exam yet with my scores it was about 55%.*

Last week before exam I reviewed USMLE deja review book. I love it! 300 pages of most important stuff!
**And I also I did NMBE 6 and 11 offline. I would say few questions were from there. *
Don't know about value of NBME to predict your score. it works different for everybody.*

All I can say: if you really wanna do it, then go for it, this exam is not that hard. It's not only thing needed to get to residency. I know because I work in research program in US hospital now and do contact with 1st year residents. Many factors are important, but it's a challenge that I will never forget!*

Good luck to everybody! And feel free to ask any questions.*

PS- one question from me: does anybody knows when I will get results?*

Hey thanks for the feedback...

good luck for your results..

i was just wondering which qbanks did you do?

actually i'm finding usmlerx really challenging.. a lot of ppl are saying its straightforward.. but its not for me..

i'm also doing uworld...

which qbank u feel is closest to exam? so most of the exm questions are doable then you felt?? no block was extremely out of this world???

Hi, thanks for your words!

I would say it NBME is the closest (difficulty, interface - all the same), some questions (2-3 in my case) were from there.
UW - good way to practice for 1 month and get an idea if you are ready to take step or not and identify weak spots in knowlegde and understanding.

I did: UW (1 month), FA Q/A , Kaplan Qbank, and NMBE 6 and 11 offline.

Well, my NMBE were 95% correct and I were confident that I know the material pretty well.

Other factors? Well, its who you know and who knows you (yeah, its very and sometimes most important factor, lets be honest), your clinical experience in US and scores of course.
