Smile meddoc90 Step 1 Exam Experience 9-24-2012

hello guys

I've done my Step 1 and thought I'd share my experience with you all

Overall not bad, the exam pretty much covers all subjects, but focus areas are not the same....I felt I had little pharmacology and microbiology, a lot of genitourinary and some nasty "cell biology/very basic stuff" questions

The exam is really long, I have taken a break every 2 blocks, but really the break won't exceed 5 minutes just to stretch muscles and have a glucose booster dose but don't rush...I finished with 35 minutes left of my break time!

My first 2 blocks blew me away, they were packed with biochemistry and genetics questions with very weird stems (you know what I mean!), after that the focus was on everything else

Biostat really easy,
ethics/behavioural...some of these really have 2 or three possible answers
(physician/pt relationship questions)

Very important point are pathology photos questions, they are not like UWorld, the stem gives you general clues but no buzz words so you have to be able to identify something in the photo to know the answer...that really irritated me

I had 2 cardiac auscultation questions...but the headphones had back noise so I had to really concentrate to get them...again you can't know the answer unless you listen....and you have to listen to the 4 valves (like the free 150 style not like UW)

I would say the exam was more like UW, sometimes harder! but definitely harder than NBMEs...In NBMEs you would get a lot of really really easy questions per block...you don't have this luxury in the real exam

oh btw I had like 5 questions that I've seen before most likely in UW....and one questions I saw in this forum just yesterday lol..the exact same question...I think it's also from UW...

In general I didn't do as I really hoped....I was aiming for 250+ but now I'd say anything in 240+ is fair enough....although wouldn't mind higher score

I'll share the full experience once the results are out
I'd be glad to answer any questions

Wish me luck...and good luck to you all

Good luck with your score! Now just sit and relax! Can you please tell me what were your scores at UW Bank and NMBE's that you have done? What is the most similar NMBE to the real exam? Thank you and take care!

Teona :

UW Qbank 77% (Random timed)
NBME 7 : 235
NBME 11: 254
NBME 12: 247
NBME 13: 242
(I took 7 then 13 then 11 then 12, I don't know if the score gets better as you do more of them or simply some are harder than others....)

UWSA 1 : 252
UWSA 2: 265

I don't really know similar to which...for me they are all similar to each other...but as I said you won't have a lot of very easy questions the way you have in NBMEs (or UWSA 2)....I'd say the exam was like UWSA 1

Venky2600

thanks yes definitely there were graph questions on all subjects most of them are explained in UW....however try to find other sources especially for basic pharmacology

Anatomy questions were mainly neuroanatomy (symptom localization)...and I had two or three about the reproductive system, some detailed stuff not found in First Aid ...

thanks for your quick reply....so does kaplan sufficient for anat(other than neuro) or we have to take HY gross anat for remaining systems( i think upperlimb and lower limb are insufficient in kaplan).....
and for biochem..what did you study(i mean does F.A sufficient or else we should do BRS/kaplan along with it for 2nd reading also..as i did first read of both already)..?

Thank you for the sharing the experience with us!
My question to you is (Like everyone else here, who's freaked about anatomy lol!), about the quality of the urogenital anatomy questions you mentioned. Was it completely alien to you? Were they just asking nerve supply etc. or something more complex? I was relying on FA too. Hoping for a 250+ too, so don't want to risk anything. Plus is there anything else you wish you'd done for the Exam? Thank you!

PS. (I do wish you a great score, and seeing your NBME's, I don't think 250+ should be a problem! )
