Smile Chachchu Exam Experience 9-26-12

I went through ups and down and when I was really low and had no one to talk I found this forum and many unknown people inspired me so I would be very happy if my this post would be helpful to even single one of u there. I was not very active member but read posts often, and made good friends through this so HATS OFF to this forum.
I am a graduate of 2011, after having worked for 1 yr I started to study for step 1. My total duration of study was 9 mths. For first two months I studied doing a part time job in which I finished reading Kaplan books once that was including Kaplan for pathology as well. Infact my first reading went so fast just like Goljan said ďRead like the speed of novel and first reading is just in knowing definitionĒ. Though 1st read only made me know where the topics were and what was the context.

After that the journey continued, with many frustrations in between many gaps slowly but steadily I gave going out with friends, television didnít exist for me and facebook and skype being only the source of connection. Its hard I say but once you are determined you will not know when the time passes by, days after mths and soon the day of exam will knock before you. Took some break after 1st read then did Kaplan q bank, started with 2nd read did U world after that. I took 1 mth of online subscription, was really hard for me to complete it in 1 mth, use to study continuously for 14 hrs at that time.

For FA, after 2nd read I went with respective topics so that didnít take much time.

Did 1 NBME offline after U world, spoiled it and was low than that I did before I took U world. I really burst into tears, again took a break but something inside me pushed me up. I started with my 3rd read, had not done videos earlier so did it and it really improved my NBME score. Gave NBME 11, 1 mth back when my score was 228.

Last 45 days was stressful, I listened to Dr Goljan audio which made me so much interested that I started with Goljan pathology but was not able to complete it before exam with more than half done.
My last revision of Kaplan including 2 blocks of U world questions took me 15 days and for FA I had kept last 10 days during which period I tried to relax too, but had headaches and sore throat, needed antibiotics and analgesics .Again consoled myself saying just a few more days and you will be over.

The day before exam- prepared my food spring rolls, cakes and fried rice. For drink I took glucose water it really gives energy and I think chocolates had a synergistic effect.
Was really worried about my sleep because could not sleep on the 4th day before exam, so took Cetrizine (though technically non sedative group of anti histamine it really helped me and I was afraid to take drugs for insomnia because of hangover) for 3 days before exam on every night. With that I had 7 hrs of sleep everday with 1 hr naps in afternoon and was much relaxed on the day of exam.
THE REAL DAY- Packed my food and things, reached the center 45 minutes earlier so went to temple nearby and 30 minutes before exam I was inside the building. But my exam started on 9 20,a bit late.
1st block: I was not afraid as I expected, could think for question no. 1 and my 1st block was a bit tough found 8 or 9 questions I didnít know about and for some I had to strike out and think.

Block 2 a bit easy, block 3 hard, for me 4 was the best block. I took breaks after all blocks, ate and got refreshed everytime I was out and I think thatís the best way to utilize breaks, skipped my tutorials. Felt fresh after each block expect for block 5 in which I was tired and couldnít think in neuro anat questions. But again tried hard to bring myself back into concentration and continued.

Took a longer break after block 5, block 6 was okay and thought I spoiled the last one. I use to mark upto 10 questions in each blocks of which I wasnít sure. Had time to go through those questions with at least 5 minutes remaining before I ended every block and even 10 minutes before I was done with some blocks.
After exam: MY VIEW
I had mixed type of feeling , it was not so easy as I had thought not so hard so as to strain my brain cells in every questions. U will get easy questions for sure like one third. There will be research questions on biochem and immunology in every block. Didnít know the answer for them . And I donít say Kaplan included everything but most questions, had clinical questions appendicitis and prolapsed type, I remember that and they asked treatment too in many questions. For time if u can do U world block in timed mode you dont have to worry.

Overall the exam was fair, included every topics, For me anatomy was the toughest and pathology was the easiest one. Had some unusual Micro picture type of questions.
MY ADVICE: I am a average student, and am happy I did through this phase, happy that completed what I started with whatever the results would show but hoping for the best with finger crossed. This is a very fair exam, it tests your basic knowledge and everything that u have learnt in entire medical life is helpful since the questions can emerge from anywhere.
My advice is DONíT GIVE UP DONíT FEEL LOW WHEN U HAVE ALREADY STARTED WITH ÖÖÖÖÖÖ.EVEN IF U DONíT SCORE WELL THE KNOWLEDGE U GET IS SO WORTHY, SO AT THE TIME OF STUDYING DO NOT THINK ABOUT RESULTS. You will be acquiring new knowledge everyday even at the last hr of exam so donít be upset thinking I didnít know it instead think now I do and . Listen to Goljan he is too good, if he can teach us this way in this age why cant we do this.

So this was my perspective, good luck to everyone out there. For me I donít have any options rather than waiting for results.
