Neurosurgery residency is extremely competitive.

You have less than 1% chance of succeeding if IMG in neurosurgery, plastic surgery and dermatology.less than 2% chance in other surgeries but it's not impossible.you can try your luck with atleast 260 in step 1

less than 2% chance in other surgeries? Is that really true? Do you have any data about that?

By the way it's not all about scores.... networking is important as well.

Quick story:

I worked with an outstanding surgeon when I was abroad for an elective, he failed step 1 on the first try, but one of his supervisors was a friend of the chief of surgery at OSU. He got an interview and was able to prove that they should take him.

Same with me: My supervisor was a postdoc at a surgical labatory... I email his former chef (+CV, + LORs) and he made it possible that I can participate in an eight week elective at th surgical department.

Once again: I believe step scores are important and the main consideration point at the beginning, but other stuff is important too.

Maybe I am just writing this, because I want to do a residency in general surgery...

what I just found:

2012: surgery categorial: positions 1146 filled with 916 US seniors... that's around 79%...

http://www.nrmp.org/data/resultsanddata2012.pdf

surgery PGY1 only: 41,7 percent filled with US seniors what about the rest?
