The correct answer is B) Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. You can check the information in Cardiology-Patology section in UW Q Bank. This way you will remember that when you have a healthy young man (less than 30 years old) that suddenly dies usually in a stressful situation (at an exam, on the football field) is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

I'm sorry, but I'm a little confused. Your explanation would mean that the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 30 is HOCM, not VFib. Is it the leading cause of both in this demographic?

Sudden cardiac death is a much broader term, which includes many causes and is defined as the death that occurs in one hour after the beginning of the acute symptoms. Usually, in this case death results from ischemia, which progresses into a ventricular arrhythmia (Vfib). So, my question could be rephrased as "what is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 30?" and the answer is HOCM. I hope I answered your question.

I got confused too.. but I think i understand the explanation now, so i hope this helps:

the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in young adults is HOCM, and the most common cause of sudden cardiac death is arrythmias (V.fib). V.fib is not mentioned in the options, so HOCM would be a good answer.

the fact that the question didn't mention 'athlete' in the stem diverted me from picking HOCM from the start..
