Arrow Some thoughts after step 1 today ...

Hello all
i've always read what you guys wrote and learned a lot from this forum, but i just thought i can help some people by sharing my thoughts.

I had to even go to another country to take the exam (europe) and it had been a short journey for me (studied for only 3 months)
I don't feel like i'll even pass ..but..hey, you learn from mistakes right?

so here it goes.
first of all , i think if you wanna do really well for this exam, you gotta absorb as many material as possible. i studied FA + uworld + some kaplan videos.. but .. it's definitely impossible to know everything, but some little tiny things you read somewhere might give you extra points!
(im refering to things that weren't in FA at all study goljan,kaplan,FA,BRS.. as much as you can from the beginning)

2ndly, Don't panic on the day of your exam.
I tried to read fast like crazy from the beginning so that i can spend more minutes on questions i can actually solve. but.. 1st and 2nd blocks will go quickly and you won't even know what you just read bc we're all nervous.
my first 3 blocks were FILLED with red flags. i was like.. Wat..the..F...

Also, I took all the scheduled breaks i could. trust me, once you're done with ur first block, you wanna leave the room. go out, pee, drink, eat whatever you want, and enter again. Noone will tell you what to do.
You sign in and out quickly as you get used to this routine.
So relax when you can !
I went through tutorial for 5 mins and still had 10 mins left at the end.

3rdly, Do all the NBMEs and always pay extra 10 bucks to know which ones you missed. (or look up all the questions on forums)
I didn't do this bc i thought it was waste of time and I was just so focused on NBME scores (bc people tell you it's your approx. test score) but..
most importantly, I got some very same questions from NBME 7, and.. maybe NBME 6 as i can remember. a few from Uworld, too.

When i was going through Uworld 2nd time, i could just figure out right answer in a few secs bc i'm used to their question styles. I felt like the real exam Qs go a bit different way from uworld questions. You assume they're gonna ask about this once you read the Q stem, but then they go all the way to some.. biochem / anatomy / some little tiny molecule.
So all im saying is Uworld is quite different from real exam.
(well the software looks exactly the same though.. )

One more thing, I would suggest (if anyone's interested) reading a few
pages from any books you're studying (for me, it was FA) for 6-7 hrs
+ another 6-7 hrs for Qs only. Continue this "until the exam day" bc I spent last 3 days reading only and kinda lost my solving strategy.
(You know, you get used to reading quickly and solving quickly if you do this everyday..) So it took me a while to get used to Qs today.
Also, reading only won't help you right before exam day bc you're too nervous and you're not really learning much... : (

Lastly, always focus on what you have to do today. Don't listen to other people saying oh you gotta get above this score, I heard he got this score, you need above this in NBMEs.. etc.
Those little thoughts will accumulate and hit you hard on your exam day.
They'll help you panic MORE !
So don't think like this exam is end of your life. We all have studied medicine, and we will finish this somehow. right?
Sometimes we may fail or pass exams at school, too right?
So take this exam as the same thing. I was so stressed I felt like I was gonna throw up every morning a few days before exam. but then
one day before exam, it hit me, what the hell. It's just an exam.
So I went and during the exam, i felt like I'll just be thankful that i got
this chance to take exam and try my best.

I know people are wondering how we're gonna take exam for full 7-8 hrs.
but.. The whole day goes so quickly. trust me, you're not tired at all until the end of last block. You just wanna do well. that's all !

I'll be nervously waiting for result for a few weeks but.. I just wish you all who are going through the same path with me a god-given strength!!
I haven't studied long enough, but whoever does will do well i'm sure : )
May God bless you all !! cheers : )
