The man is covering his depression by kicking.............i think it's like throwing of temper tantrums by an abandoned child........ so acting out..........difficult to distinguish though.

its ACTING OUT..as the man's frustration of being fired from the job is expressed on the spot(instant reaction /response) like temper tantrum ..If he could have displaced his frustration e.g ..on his children /wife /frns or less harmful beings by shouting on them/misbehaving for no reason afterward then it could have been displacement
I thought in that way

Doubt ... Does displacement has something to with the motive being redirected toward 'people' and not 'things' or 'actions' ??

I think it has to do with the kind of feeling he has I.e., if he is angry about losing his job and redirects the anger towards the floor , it is displacement ..

If he s depressed and he takes that out in the form of anger by kicking the floor , then it is acting out

I would go with displacement.
As he would be breaking those tiles then it could be acting out but anyways it is a tough call.

The defence mechanism is Acting Out as it is emotional outburst without expressing the real emotion which is depression after getting fired. in short the expressed emotion(anger in this case) is different from the emotion that is unexpressed( sadness or depression in this case).

In displacement the same emotion runs from higher level to lower level. In scenarios u ll see the same emotions or actions but targets are different. If the guy after getting fired had fired his maid at home then the defence mechanism would have been displacement.

but if we say after getting fired the guy was angry and he displaced his anger on tiles. Then?

Bro info is just that he was fired. it didnt tell the emotion of boss. For displacement u need a clear cut evidence that the same emotion has been used but on different target. If the question was like this " the boss was angry and he fired the person and after that person hit the floor" Now u have clear evidence and the answer ll Displacement.

MY ANSWER : DISPLACEMENT

he feels angry read carefully again-->engineer kicking the floor when discovered he got fired from job<-- redirecting what he feels-- he is not covering his feelings . the receptor of that feeling(angry) can be persons or objects.

if he were covering his feelings maybe he would start to drink, overeating, substance abuse,etc--->that is acting out
