Smile Teona's exam experience

Hey guys! Thank you so much for all your good wishes! I feel so relieved right now because STEP 1 exam is OVER.

Guys, I am feeling euphoric right now because all the adrenaline rush that has been running through my veins for 8 hours. The exam was easier than I expected. The exam is DOABLE, as everybody says. The only problem is concentrating for 8 hours. This was the only problem for me.

My advice for you guys is:

-do DIT; it helped me a lot, because I was a lonely learner;

-do the free 150 questions 1-2 days before the exam. I skipped the tutorial and gained extra 15 minutes which added to the regular break which is 45 minutes. Guys, 1 hour is not a lot of time. It flies very rapidly. Plus, every single time when you go out from Prometric center and when you come back you have to sign and take the fingerprints and it takes time. Moreover, I had 1 or 2 questions from the 150 free;

-my test had a lot of reproductive and endocrine, but it wasn't very hard.

- I had 2 audio questions, 2 systolic murmurs, easy to identify from the question stem;

- see pictures of parasites ova and protozoa;

- I had questions starting with "a researcher", but my advice is to try to think that question. Even though it is about a gene mutation that you have never heard but in the end they test a concept that you encountered somewhere. At least, this is what I felt.

-last, but not least, study FA from cover to back and then backwards. Most of the answers you will find there. And you should have all the connections in your brain before the exam, because I don't think there is too much time to sit and think.

This is my post about my exam experience. If you have any questions, I will answer them.

Everyone can take this exam. Don't ever loose hope!!!

Cheers!

Hey Alice!
I didn't feel there were to many and annoying questions in my exam. I had neuro anatomy like brainstem and spinal cord slides, brachial plexus questions, rotator cuff injury, occlusion syndromes and of course 2 abdominal CT's and 2 brain MRI.
I used Kaplan anatomy lecture book and lecture, FA and DIT and Neuroanatomy High Yield for brainstem anatomy, cranial nerves and occlusion syndromes.
Good luck!

Hello Blade!

Actually there were between 14-20 pictures in my exam. I had 2 or 3 cell electron microscopy so make sure you know this stuff. For my preparation I used these links:

http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/GENERAL.html
http://usmlepathslides.tumblr.com/.

I didn't do all the slides, so don't freak out if you haven't gone through. For some of the questions I didn't need the picture because I could make the diagnosis only from the stem question. I didn't have any picture slides from NBMEs that I have done (7, 12, 13) or UWSA1/2.

Good luck!

Hey venky!

I think Kaplan is enough for parasitology. Just make sure you are able to recognize and distinguish from different types of parasites ova. I had 3 questions where they would show the ova or the parasite and had to choose the answer.
For me, I would say the questions are similar to NBME 7 and 13. You can find concepts from UWolrd or UWSA in the test but most of the choices are easier than UWorld where you ended up with 2 choices and didn't know which one is the right one. Of course I had WTF questions and some questions in which my previous knowledge helped me to choose an answer, but they weren't that many.

Good luck venky with your studies!

Hey nishaa!

Well, the biostatistics were ok. I had questions with sensitivity and specificty, PPV and absolute risk reduction. I didn't find them hard. I had some problems with Behavioral because I think the questions were similar to UWolrd rather than NBME. I didn't read all 100 Cases of Conrad so maybe that would have helped me more. I don't know what to say.
Good luck nishaa!

When I was doing one of my NBMEs and I was down and I felt that everything will turn out bad, my husband read me about the giant bamboo.

"a tree in Asia called the giant bamboo that has a particularly hard seed. It's so hard that to grow you must fertilize and water that seed everyday for 4 years before any portion of it breaks the soil. And then in the 5th year, the tree shows itself. But the remarkable thing is that once it breaks the surface the bamboo plant is capable of growing at rates as fast as four feet a day to a height of ninety feet in less than a month! You can practically stand there and watch it grow! Did the bamboo tree grow ninety feet in under a month? Or did it grow over five years? Over five years, of course!"

"when they don't see instant results, many people become discouraged with their dreams and goals. They become impatient. And I believe that many of them walk away form their dreams just as they are about to break through and flourish. You must have patience. Your time is going to come if you work diligently and meticulously."

So what I am trying to say to you is that we all need patience and hard work but we will all succeed someday. Just don't ever loose hope and remember to follow your dreams!

That was good !!!
And i remember one fellow wrote in his experience that process of preparation is like defrosting the frozen chicken you cant do anything but to wait until its done
so patience folks (it is one of the best gift given to mankind)

Hey Teona, congratulations on slaying the beast

My question is how many WTF questions should one be looking forward to?

And did you have genetics on your exam? Like the lab mice and all other stuff?

Thanks

Thank you so much!
I started my preparation in March...so I studied for 8 months. In the beginning I was studying from Monday to Saturday for 5-6 hours a day and at the end I was trying to study as much as 10-12 hours/day. But last week was horrible, because I was tired and didn't feel like studying anymore.
I did Kaplan lecture notes and videos for 3-4 months and then I did questions from Kaplan Q Bank for almost 2 months together with a second reading of Kaplan. At the end of September I started UWorld and FA. I did Uworld twice and in October I started DIT, which helped a lot.

Wish you good luck!

Well, people say to expect between 5-10 WTF questions/ block. I didn't feel there were so many, but last block was a little bit strange for me. I felt that was the hardest for me, like most of the questions were WTF.

As I said before, there were questions with different researchers that do different experiments, but I tried to solve those problems. Most of them were testing some molecular/genetic concept that I encountered some where else. Genetic wasn't hard. I had one tricky question at the end of a block and I was running out of time and I don't know if I got that right. But, UWorld and FA covers the genetic part really well.

I did Kaplan lecture notes and video, FA and Goljan audio and read some things from the book. But, as I was approaching the exam date, I was feeling I don't remember too much from Goljan and I didn't go back to revise. I felt that DIT added some thinks that I didn't know or some concepts that were in Goljan. Moreover, the Goljan version that I had was a little bit old and updated. The same issue I had with the pictures from Goljan.

Teona, my date is on the 21st (pushed from 15th to do UWSA and NBME.) When you said that you felt you were forgetting everything from FA in the last few days, (And I REALLY feel like I am, cause I get so many questions on the forum wrong these days.) Is it just an insecurity, or does one actually forget?

PS. Came back to read the quote. So beautifully written, thank you. May success be with you!

@teona
I read that u did fa in the last month.
Well the prob. With me is that I'm unable to do fa. :/
I did I like months ago. But now I'm not getting mental satisfaction frm it.
So I'm doing kaplans. :/
I dunno if I'm right or wrong.

Plz tell. As my step one is on 29 nov.

N despite doing kaplans. I still got an average score in nbme 12 ...
I meant to ask u that should I be doing fa to improve my nbme score ?
Cz I'll be taking nbme 13 after a week of reading all of the kaplans n revising my notes of uworld n offcouse after my revision of pathoma.

M I doin right ?

PS. Came back to read the quote. So beautifully written, thank you. May success be with you!
Hey docki!

I had the same feeling in the last couple of days, but I can assure you that when you will be in front of your computer you will remember so many thinks. So, don't worry too much, just try to work on your weak areas and don't forget to read your list of unforgetables.

Good luck!

Hey Drmano!

I can only tell you from my own experience. I hated FA in the beginning. I felt I couldn't retain anything and every time I wanted to read FA I was throwing it away and went back to Kaplan. But, I think that FA has most of the information and everything is really condensed so that you can revise everything in the last week before the exam. I don't know how you will revise all the small details from Kaplan. But I am sure you have a plan and you will do great Good luck!

So umm I've planned to do kaplans till 19 th nov.
Then I have my regional residency exam on the 20 th nov.
So taking out the travel day I'll have like a week for step one.
I'm now thinking of doing fa. Ure right. Thanks.

But the prob is I've not annotated my fa with Kaplan. Is it ok ? I mean is it enough for the exam revision to do just fa without the annotation from Kaplan ?
I'm asking cz u have the exam experience.
Thanx teona.
Goodluck.

-do DIT; it helped me a lot, because I was a lonely learner;

-do the free 150 questions 1-2 days before the exam. I skipped the tutorial and gained extra 15 minutes which added to the regular break which is 45 minutes. Guys, 1 hour is not a lot of time. It flies very rapidly. Plus, every single time when you go out from Prometric center and when you come back you have to sign and take the fingerprints and it takes time. Moreover, I had 1 or 2 questions from the 150 free;

-my test had a lot of reproductive and endocrine, but it wasn't very hard.

- I had 2 audio questions, 2 systolic murmurs, easy to identify from the question stem;

- see pictures of parasites ova and protozoa;

Cheers!

Hello Preeti!

I had almost 1 hour break and I took 2 minutes after the first block (I didn't get out of the room) and then 5 to 10 minutes after each block. I took my mobile phone from the locker each time to keep my timing. I was almost running during my breaks, because all the finger print issue was annoying...and I also used the bathroom twice
I think at least 1 online NBME is ok. If you have the possibility I would advise you to take another one, a more recent one, because NBME 7 is a bit easier than 12 or 13.

Hope that helped! Good look!
