Kaplan Medical Kaplan diagnostic test

hey guys
just wanted to get your opinion on a kaplan diagnostic test i took a few mins ago. it was a 3 block, 4 hour test. I scored 41%, super disappointed. I've only finished biochem, genetics, embryo, anatomy and some micro, haven't gone over any systems yet, but i seriously thought i had thoroughly covered those subjects. I know the test was random and tested everything, but i still think I should have scored higher. I feel so dumb! before i started preping, i took a kaplan diagnostic (my school ran the test) and i made a 43%, this was 1.5 months ago. Not sure what i'm doing wrong...I've been studying everyday for at least 6-8hrs, doing videos and KLN+FA (haven't reviewed anything yet).
Should I be worried about my approach? Should I change my study resources? maybe switch to BRS books? I'm very disappointed

Any input will be much appreciated!

Sarah

Use NBME to track your performance and add Usmle World bank to your prep regimen-random,timed,unused mode. (or first do kaplan Q bank to get feeling of easier mcqs subject wise).

p.s don't gauge yourself unless you are done with at least one Q Bank and all subjects(esp pathology and F.A).

Best luck

Hi offpsite,
Thanks for your reply. Do you think I should finish the Kaplan Q bank before taking another diagnostic test?

Finish kaplan notes+kaplan Q bank + F.A and then take online NBME(may be 7 which is easier compared to 11,12 ,13) to see where you are also it will give you a baseline before starting U world

remember the less time you take to go through the books and banks the better will be your performance

Keep working hard

So you're saying I should try to finish up as quickly as possible? I've been told to 'take my time' in doing KLNs. also, do people normally go over the stuff they cover or just keep moving forward and once they're done everything they go back and review the whole thing?

Thanks for your advice again! i appreciate it.

Obviously you should take time to digest kaplan notes but once you are taking "too much time" then you tend to forget more so if its your first read then try to be rational/optimal in spending time on every subject.

1) make a plan in which you give fair amount of time to each subject and stick to it
2)after doing kaplan notes and Q bank give a read to F.A to recap everything
3)then take nbme(will also give you baseline before starting usmle world)
4)your above plan should not exceed 3 months

p.s don't take kaplan diagnostic test, take online nbme to give you true reflection of how well you are doing .
Cheers

Sarah don't get disappointed, probably there were many questions that you had to guess because you haven't coverEd that material yet and some of them even though you know the concept you needmto know how to answer those questions i had a similar experience near august, i took the self assesment text that comes with the first aid QnA book and i got like 50% or something ņike that, i had only covered up to micro and only from the kaplan vids and first aid, i was also really disappointed but i kept studying and last week i answered a block of that same exam just "for fun" and i got like 30/46, not that much but it definitely is some progress, until now i have covered almost all systems im only missing reproductive, respiratory and renal, so just keep up the good work and dont give up
