Smile Rookie Step 1 experience

Firstly THANKS to this awesome forum which happened to be my sole SP throughout my preparation for Step 1! I always thought about writing my experience even before I wrote Step1 everytime I went through someone else’s This is the way I could give back to the forum which helped me so much

Little Background: Indian IMG graduated march 2012. Only decided to take step1 seriously after my internship ended. Am the only person from my batch to give step1 so it was little difficult for me to prepare on my own and lots of distraction as I studied at home. But you can surely prepare on your own provided you have the study material and this forum will always be there for all of us

Study Material:
Kaplan notes apart from Pathology-1s thoroughly and brushed through in 2nd read apart Immunology, Behavioural, Microbiology on which I spent more time even second read.
Goljan RR-read only once, went back to it only for review certain topics.
FA-read 3 times. I recommend it highly but don’t depend on it solely. Best way is to read atleast KLN note once and then go to FA.
UW offline 2007 version in between my study as it used to get monotonous- only behavioural, immuno, embryo, anatomy, pharmac,.
UW online- GOLD last 2months, which I completed in 45 days ( RANDOM TIMED MODE do this way to prepare for real test better and learning subject wise will happen when you study books ) with some day 2 blocks/day and most days 1 block/day and rest 15 days I redid marked and incorrect Qs till I got them all correct n again. I would highly suggest to go through Marked and Incorrect Qs after finishing UW. The format of Qs and the whole interface is exactly how it is in the exam. I took notes from UW on my FA

Study period:
Serious study 6-7months. March was wasted and many break in between. Though I had books during Internship I was unable to finish even 1 kaplan review book apart from Behavioural science. Some day I would study for 8 hrs and some day like 3-4hrs. I never compromised my Tv serials doses I did cut down them in last month.

Last 1 month of preparation was crucial during which I studied mainly FA and UW and Kaplan here and there. I tore selected pages with tables and Cycles/graphs from my spiral bound Kaplan Notes and stapled them for reviewing the previous day. But was unable to review them completely as that itself became to much stuff to read. Take care of your health, eat healthy food and more importantly eat

Previuos Day: Did free 150 and tried to review the stapled Kaplan notes as much as possible. Slept at 10.30pm but my mind was racing with excitment that I will be done with step 1 in another 18 hrs I shopped for chocolates, energy bars, energy drinks etc, with my cousin who started doubting me if i was going to write an exam or for trip

Test day:
What matters is how you manage to perform on this day. . Especially how you manage you time and not let you get hypoglycaemic.
Got up at 5.30am. before leaving did 10 random Qs as suggested by one of the member on this forum. Reached to prometric at 7.15. No I didn’t study on the way and no you don’t get to study during the break period when you just gotta run and run.
Started tes at 7.45am
Skipped tutorial after 5 min so got 55 min break
2block---15min break>3rd block---7min >4th block---10 min > 5th block--10min> 6th block –12min>7th
1st and 7th block were difficult for me. Marked on avg 7-10 Qs most in 7th block(may be because of burn out)
WTF Qs will be there like few in block just mark what you think best ans could be and move on DONT WASTE TIME.
Try to complete each block with aim of having 10 min spare time for reviewing marked Qs and then you will get at least 5 min for reviewing.
I literally ran during break time as getting in and out takes time and ate in each break and energy drink for the last two breaks to keep me going.
Be prepared for the long test day, better practice(I did NBMEs/UWSA but they are have 4 blocks and at home you take longer breaks and so you don’t get tired) to sit 8hrs straight in real test time runs and last 2 blocks were bit exhausting for me.

Difficulty level of real exam :
I felt it was more like UW but easier. Most Qs were straight forward except for WTF ones.

Score correlation:
• NBME 3 offline(3months before) -160/199
• NBME 6offline (2months before) - 173/199
• NBME 13 online (15 days before after finishing UW) – 238
• USWA1(11 days before aft reviewing marked and incorrect ones) -265
• USWA2(5days before) – 261
• UW- 77% random timed
• Free 150- 86%

Real test: 251/87

Tips:
Everyone as different reading style, some plan extensively and some study what they feel like with view of completing certain subject during some specified time. Make your own study plan based on your weaknesses
SP is not a must, if you are comfortable you can definitely prepare on your own. But be sure to visit online forums for queries/Qs etc you will learn a lot. Dont be depressed if you dont know the ans for Qs posted just visit later to check later to know ans that way you will learn.
Get your basics right >80% will be basics, WTF qs are countable and you can’t prepare for them. Thats ehy many said step1 is doable and I agree.
Practice time management and try to do many Qs from Qbanks/online forums etc

And I am so thankful to my family they have been a constant support through this long preparation. Still I got long way to go and CS and CK wait for me ahead.

Hope it helped. Feel free to ask if you have any Qs.

good luck with your preparation.

Thank you! There was fair number of Immuno Qs. for Immuno kaplan(last pages with tables too) + FA will be fine.

If you have 5 weeks and if u are done with UW well and good. If Not done with UW try to finish it asap with reviewing marked n incorrect Qs like at least 2wks before test.

Take an NBME if you haven't to know your weak area and spend more time on them and plan accordingly. Read FA besides go over those graphs and tables in Kaplan side by side specially Biochem, Viruses, Biostat, Genetics .

Congratulations!
I want to ask does Goljan make difference to score? How much time did u take to finish each subject? And how much reads u give to KLN?

Great post and congrats. I am also a Indian med grad and wanted to know how was mol bio and genetics tested. I dunno how much ever i study i find it difficult cos in our curriculum it wasnt heavily emphasized. How many questions were covered in total from these subjects. Any rough guess would be helpful and go ve a blast

Instead of KLN I did Goljan. it took a lot of time nearly a month but you can finish even sooner. I did it after finishing other subj in KLN. I would suggest to do the 1st chapters on general path if you can and you have time but not a must if u running out of time

Kaplan- took around 3months apart from path. 1 complete thorough reading and 2nd read in between while doing FA 1st read.

Check ur weak areas n spend more time on them . GL

1) No I found it online. Screen shots
2) qbanks- offline UW just few topics like Bio-stat, BS, Biochem, pharmac, anatomy n embryo. Then UW online for 2 months . No other Qbank I used.

Ya, KLN has covered what's required for MolBio imo FA won't help. Read KLN biochem well
Few weird Q on genes were there on Mol bio and genetics were but You can expect around 10-20 Qs may be. For me Endocrine BS was tested More I felt. Qpool varies. Better be good with those promoters, enhancers, transcription factors thing in Mol bio.

The low score in NBME is definitely due to the circumstance and surely you will do much much better if you study this one month as you already read ur KLN notes many times and done with UW. 75-80% in UW is way above avg and you are doing good. Now plan and study sincerely this one month and still you can ace this exam as you have all that is needed do that. FA and UW notes would do. U can go back to KLN whenever necessary.

You know yourself best, you have been there on the top but step 1 is more about practice and endurance through 8hrs long exam as everyone here has that knowledge. Practice more questions and time management. Keep calm!

If there was an option for changing name in this forum I would have have changed it like 100s time depicting my mental status throughout my step1 journey

still I consider myself a Rookie.

Congratulations!

I have a question that is it normal to forget stuff during first read. Because I'm in my first read but when I look back to subjects that I have covered I don't remember a lot of things?

When do u suggest to start solving Qs? At the end of first read or second read?

Thanks!

I am no brother ! And thank you

Well I haven't gone through other Qbank apart from UW so I can't comment how good they are.

Start UW ASAP and take notes from it. Try to do set of Questions in random timed mode which would be good practice, take Self assesment(NBME or uwsa) know your weakness n try to improve those subjects. Do it really well n thoroughly, review again after 1st pass. Be done with 2weeks before xam. Keep atleast last 2weeks for just FA with UW notes I would say and do free150 as many during this period. Practice sitting 8hrs straight specially during last week before test! Good luck

It's totally normal to feel this way after 1st read sply if you took long time. 2nd read go fast and begin with the subject you started 1st.

Imo better to start solving Qs after 1 read. And read your books side by side.

Hey mate! Thanx for sharing your experience and congratulations. 251 is a great score. I have got a few questions:
a) Are all questions counted? Some people say those WTF questions are experimental and are not counted, is that really true?
b) You scored 251, so on an average how many questions would you have gotten wrong on your test per block? js give me some idea...
I took my test on 29th of nov. I am really scared. I can't obviously remember all the questions but there were few ques which I wasn't sure abt and some of them are wrong. Any advice on how to prepare myself for the result?

Thank you

regarding your Qs
a) IDK. But, IMO its better to think that all Qs are counted and answer for our benefit. as you are done must have got results no use worrying bout it now

b) on an average marked 8-10 Qs (except last block, marked about 15) which I was not sure of. No idea how many I got wrong.

GL for next step
