Default Okaaaaay :D

So Guys after the boring 35 days my score came at last. I'm very gratefull of this forum couse believe or not it was my only source for Choosing correct and appropriate Books,Qbanks and so on.

Little bit about myself. I'm last year med. student in far far Georgia began my preparation in March 2011 and gave it in last october. i had around 5 month gap cause i did some electives in europe and had no time to sit for usmle. overall it took me Year and 2 months. why so long? i began my prep with decent basic sciences knowledge background. People here (in georgia) take 4 even 5 year private courses only for step I and do all the big "fancy" textbooks like devlin and stuff. that's why i was little frightened to prepare in shorter interval and on myself only.

My Prep Plan For Step 1/ What Do You Think?

what i did:

First i went along Kaplan lectures and Notes ex. of Microbiology,Immunology and Pathology. first read took me around 6 months. Did RR pathology and CMMRS. these books and videos built the "understanding" part of examination imo. you have to do them at least once to be in a good shape to be ready for questions that need thinking. after that i did second hit of them along with FA 2012. this part of preparation was oriented on pure memorization ( hardes part). Every single detail counts especially from FA. never underestimate this book. i used KLN 2009 so FA 2012 had many additional stuff needed for exam.
after second hit i had my Fa full with KLN infos so i decided to do it along with UW subjectwise. As long UW is considered as a learning tool doing it subjectwise is most appropriate way to use it. i took me 2 months FA + UW nothing else. after that i took nbme 13 and got 230. Had 1,5 month before exam and took DIT course. it's a great tool for retaining material in head. additional info in it is very low yield imo. than took nbme 11 and got 252. final score of 244 is near the medium: 482(230+252)/2= 241.

if you want info about my exam itself take a look here:

My Prep Plan For Step 1/ What Do You Think?

here's my Performance profile:

as i stated Gross anatomy and Musckuoskeletal anatomu Majorly were weird i've got lowest performance in them.

i will go through subjects and will write my personal advices about them:

Behavioral Science: KAPLAN for sure is good but you need good amount of questions to practice. I posted in my exam exp, Uweapon qbank only for biostatistics helped me very much. statistics qs were directly from there.
for ather parts like psycho and psychiatry kaplan with FA is sufficient for sure.

Biochemistry: i've a star in. Kaplan was the best biochemistry book for usmle, including Molecular stuff. Make sure that you realize and understand big picture of wtf is going on. after that UW was significant amount of questions to practice in it.

Genetics: another star in it. I think kaplan didn't helped in it at all. Going through Goljan and qbanks was best way to prepeare for it. don't underestimate HW eq. had 2 qs about it

Gross anatomy and Embryo: gross anatomy is for sure underestimated. generally people don't pay much of attention to it, but that wasn't case with me. as i said it was 3 most commonly tested subject on my exam. esp. all the pelvic muscles and ligaments. embryo was good FA is enough for it.

Histology and Cell biology: i took kaplan histo far away. didn't read it second time. the question from pure histology was under 2% of exam. Cell biology was tested in twisted ways, but overall kaplan biochem book and uw build solid foundation in this particular subject.

Microbiology: as i said i did CMMRS and than FA. i would say that micro is the only subject that can be done from only FA without any additional books.

Immunology: to divide it in two parts: I. easy normal stuff directly from FA II. research type of questions about MHC-s and other stuff. i did levinson's immunology part and than FA. they work very good together couse levinson is member of faculty reviewers of FA.

Pathology: my favorite one. i did goljan and did pathoma too. i felt i was very good in patho. FA gives the very good points in general pathology.

Pharmacology: got a star in it general pharm needs to be done from Kaplan for sure. also CVS kidney pharm. others are given in FA very good. there are many additional medications in FA. esp in endocrine and have got 2 or 3 questions about them for example about exenatide.

Physiology: not my favorite but i did pretty well on my exam. i did kaplan videos along with BRS physiology. they do work togher and if you add UW stuff it more than enough. don't try to do constanzo big textbook or don't even think about guyton. FA isn't enough for sure you have to add info in it.

BRS phys+kaplan anatomy+ Goljan best trio for all the systems.

Cardiovascular: had 2 auscultations and i think i've got them correct. have a star in cardio overall it was easy compared to uw questions of cardio.

Endocrine: Superhigh yield section of exam. they had aroun 10 questions only about Ca and PTH metabolism. make sure you understand the big picture of whole process. memorization only won't help you much.

other systems seemed pretty fine.

Conclusion:
i'm very happy for the score i've got. going to hit internal medicine and assume that it is very nice score. i will always state Kaplan +Gojan + FA is trio that works. it depends on us how we deel with them. every single detail counts. i'm kinda happy that i broke the legend in my country that you need 4 to 5 years to do well on this exam.

So i wish you luck fellas and endurance !!!!!

i would love to say thanks to all of you who helped me on this forum.
esp. my devoted friend @MedicalExaminer and my study partner @Marikella.

i'm ready to answer any questions regarding preparation and exam.

yes goljan pics help very much. Just go through CVS,resp,gi slides on webpath if you have time. it won't take long.

FA seeming suddenly new, i can imagine that no worries exam is doable. make sure that you go over the forgetfull stuff in it.

good luck

Congratulations!

How much reads did u give to KLN and FA?

Do u think we can do better with Pathoma, without using Goljan?

Thanks

KLN-2 times FA -3 times.

i personally think that both are essential for exam. Do goljan and after that use pathoma if you have time of course. if you have to choose between them i would go with goljan for sure.

i only did biostat+ biochemistry and microbiology. it's new and that's why they have more "modern" question than other qbanks. i think overall it easier than uw but harder than other ones.

I did one read of physiology from Kaplan, but I have lot of confusions. Now I plan to give read to BRS physio during my second read. Is it better to read BRS or stick to Kaplan?

i think no additional book is needed for genetics. if you have time go through kaplan videos.. but there are so many lowest yield stuff in it. after that do FA + Goljan and then questions from uw.

HW is hardy weinberg equation

Great score b-CTS I have few questions:

1)besides U world and usmle weapon did you use Kaplan bank if yes then how effective it was?

2)A part from standard prep (kaplan+Goljan+Uworld+pathoma)was there anything extra you did for CT/MRIs/Xray/ecgs???or is it sufficient to stick with standard prep material?

3)How helpful was pathoma read( esp in real exam)after you finished Goljan??

Thanks in advance

2)A part from standard prep (kaplan+Goljan+Uworld+pathoma)was there anything extra you did for CT/MRIs/Xray/ecgs???or is it sufficient to stick with standard prep material?

3)How helpful was pathoma read( esp in real exam)after you finished Goljan??

Thanks in advance
1. i did whole uw, biostat, biochem, embryo and gyn from uweapn. took kaplan only for general subjects. i think that kaplan qbank isn't essential for exam. you can totally depend on uw for sure.

2. for Cts and Mri-s i used only this web: http://www.info-radiologie.ch/ct-index.php i just went through pics nothing special.you can stick to standard books imo.

3. after i did goljan i thought that i didn't remembered much of it. i began then pathoma and it sure was helpful. there are new points in pathology that dr.sattar adds to goljans book. after them i felt very good while dealing with anykind of question. i would recommend both of them.

Hi Beka,
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, it really helps! I was just wondering though, you said that anatomy was tested a lot on your test and that you managed to do well, what exactly did you use to prepare for anatomy? Anatomy is a very weak subject for me I read kaplan LN and did the videos but I still feel like I don't know much. I'm too intimidated by the Clinically oriented anatomy book (the huge one) and I certainly have no time for it either. Do you have any advice for me?
Thanks

Good luck with everything

Yeah as you can see gross anatomy was hardest subject for me too. overall gross anatomy is underrated for usmle step 1.

i also did kaplan but be sure that you go through the tables in Moore's COA in upper and lower limbs. only tables, you know where the muscle attaches and what it does. muskuloskeletal anatomy part was hardest. also Pelvic muscles and perineum.

so go through to tables in clinically OA, then kaplan and then tests. esp kaplan qbank has many questions in anatomy compared to uw.

good luck to you too
