haha All of us like to discuss this topic.
Actually it can be any of those but medial meniscus is more common but remember just don't stick to that. Recently i did a question in NBME which had similar question regarding unhappy triad with an X ray image of knee. In which it was shown that lateral meniscus is damaged.
So pay attention to question too.
Hope it helps

If you are talking about the question in NBME 7...Isn't the answer to that question...MEDIAL Meniscus or MEDIAL LIGAMENT.The question in which they have shown the X-Ray.

Correct me plz ,cos I chose Medial and it was right. Thanks

Hey just checked the question again. It's actually about collateral ligament. Nothing to do with miniscus. Seems I am suffering from CONFABULATION now. ;-)
But I still suggest don't cram particular details about unhappy triad. Read question and make judgement.
Thanks doc4step1.

Unhappy triad is strictly 3 structures involved hence the name"triad"
Anterior cruciate
Medial collateral
Medial meniscus (because the medial collateral and meniscus are 2 structures held together as one hence damage to one often involves the other)

Damage to any other knee structure eg posterior cruciate is possible but they are not part of the unhappy triad
