Hi, i didnt give my step yet, but as no one responded yet, i am trying to help you out with the little information i know,
Most of the people apply for residency after completing step 1, step 2 ck and cs
Application time is september,
to apply for residency you need to clear those steps,
plan accordingly so that you finish your steps before september,
As you told that your starting your preparation now i dont think you will be able to finish steps by september 2013
And regarding the plan of preparation,
I know only about step 1
you need to study kaplan for all the subjects except pathology,
For pathology study pathoma and goljan
If possible take kaplan qbank while studying kaplan, so that you will know how the questions will be and you will know how to study
Once you finish studying kaplan
Subscribe for uworld qbank and study DIT and USMLE RX videos for first aid, along with first aid book

Time required for preparation depends on individual interest and their basic knowledge and study hours each day, generally it takes 6 months atleast, if you prepare well.
Study will be productive if you have a good study partner

I watched pathoma videos and then listened to goljan audio for each topic with concerned notes for both and slides for goljan
I am now reading RR book, occasionally looking at webpath and occasionally listening to heart and lung sounds

Pathoma alone is not sufficient, i am sure about it, for example in pathoma he dont mention anything about pericarditis in cardiac pathology, but as far as he explains, he explains everything very well
