Smile Step 1 228/83 experience

Hello everyone, I just wanted to post my experience with step 1 and how I prepared. I got a 228/83.. I was aiming for a 230+ score but I am happy with my score. I took the exam NOV 13th and got my results back today (DEC 5th). Here is my story..

Background:
I am a us citizen but attended a Caribbean school.

Prep time 4 months
1. kaplan lecture notes (all of them except path) --> anatomy was a waste of time
- Kaplan took me like 2 months to finish
- I watched the vids for behavioral/pharm/micro/biochem/physio
2. BRS physiology***
3. Goljan***
4. FA****( I read it like 5 times)
5. DIT 2012 (took me a month to complete)--> very helpful, helps tie everything together
6. Uworld- finished with a 70% (random/timed)
7. kaplan q bank- I didn't have time to do all of it but I did do about 1000 high yield question .. I found the respiratory and cardiology sections to be very helpful

I found DIT 2012 most helpful to sum everything up!! It literally improved my nbme score by 25 pts..

Assessment exams: (ALL Online)
nbme 5: 200 (3 months out)--> scared me to death
nbme 6: 205 (2.5 months out)--> almost **** my pants ..again
uworld assessment 1: 242 (2 months out) --> felt much better
** Started DIT 2012** --> 1.5 month out
uworld #2: 252 1 month out
nbme 11: 221 (3 weeks before the exam)
nbme 12: 228 (2 weeks before the exam)
nbme 7: 238 (5 days before the exam)

Exam day!
-Got plenty of sleep (thanks to trazodone )
-Ate a great breakfast
- Arrived at test center 30 min early (I actually visited the testing center the day before to make sure I knew where I was going)
- Exam is totally doable!! Don't be nervous..

TIPS!!
During the 15 min intro I wrote down all the formulas that I could remember (especially biostat) in the provided laminated sheets. That helped me a lot..

Food!
I stuck to high energy food (i liked Gatorade pre-game for my short breaks: it has lots of Na/K/B vitamins, and CARBS!!), I also took a small sandwich for my lunch, red bull..

Exam itself!
Block 1 was the toughest for me, I think I may have marked 15 q's total.. scary
I had 46 q's/block with 60 min (just like uworld).. some of my peers said that they had 48 q's/block..(weird).
I HAD REPEAT QUESTIONS FORM NBME EXMAS (I had 3 repeat q's from nbme 7).. and a few others from other nbme exam

I ONLY HAD 7 Pharm questions, which I thought was weird.
The majority of my exam focused on pathophysiology of the organ systems
- graphs and charts were all over the place so learn how to interpret them well
LOTS of biostat questions. I also have lots of neuro and clinical anatomy questions (anterior compartment syndrome, sciatica, types of fractures..etc)

Anyways,
I wish I have done a little bit better on the exam but I can't complain. This forum gave me some great insight and helped me a lot through my preparation. Reading other people's posts gave me a lot of hope and confidence, I felt like I wasn't alone in this battle. I just wanted to thank everyone for their contributions to this forum.

Congrats!! That's a great score
Btw, you mentioned that you didn't like anatomy from Kaplan, do you recommend any other book? and was anatomy heavily tested on your exam? thanks
Sarah

I basically finished uworld once while I was in school and I did it over again during my prep.

There were about 6-7 clinical anatomy q's on my exam, I didn't like kaplan anatomy b/c it goes into too much depth. I always used netter's clinical anatomy as a reference and to study throughout medschool so it helped out for my prep.
