Arrow Dec 3rd exam experience

atlast, its my turn to write my experience with usmle step 1
1st and foremost, the exam is way easier than any qbank or nbme, its very very doable if you have the stamina to think 8hrs sretch.

i had 95% of questions are from FA,very few questions like 15 overall that i have no idea what they wanted but like 20 questions where i have 2 close options to choose from for eg,i had a question where they asked which live vaccine is allowed in HIV +ve child, the option had mumps and measles

my exam was like 80% pathology/pathophysiology
i wanted to get my result befor posting my experience but think i should post thiss for those seating for exam soonest
1.make sure you revise all FA atleast 5days to exam(it helped me most)
2.pls do the free usmle 150 questions.i did it a night to my exam and got atleast 10 questions word for word from it
http://download.usmle.org/2012/Step1Download.zip
it looks easy, but make sure you know the ones you get wrong

in summary befor i get my result;i think the key to step 1 is
-FA is gold if you understand it well.(if not,use it with kaplan videos)
-pathoma and goljan audio is enough for pathology
-uworld seals your faith
-practise on your stamina,it determines your overall score(i dont even know how my 7th block ended due to terrible brain storm

goodluck guys,see y'all in 2ck

Smile Good for you!

Thank you blade! That was indeed very motivational, now i am going to concentrate on FA and will refer pathoma for lengthier topics in goljan to save time. Very useful post, thank you also for the link to the free 150questions, hope you exceed your expectations! By the way what was the answer for the HIV question, and did you get a lot of endocricne, biostat on your exam? A/V? Please don't mind me asking a lot of questions,am excited after reading your experience and am hopeful that i can pullout a decent performance too.

Thanx for sharing your experience. It has further strengthened my faith in FA.Have my exam in 3 weeks. Now it will be just FA FA FA btw that question was very very unjust as both can be given clearly if the patient is HIV+ AND ASYMPTOMATIC. Goodluck for your result

Recommended Vaccines
  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Pertussis
  • Polio (only inactivated polio)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB)
  • Pneumococcus
  • Meningococcus
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
Vaccines to Avoid
  • BCG (TB Vaccine)- Can cause TB infections in people with immune systems weakened by HIV
  • Polio - The live virus polio vaccine should not be given to HIV infected kids because it can cause disease. Inactivated polio vaccine is recommended for children with HIV.
  • Chickenpox - Because the chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine, it can cause a disseminated (throughout the body) chickenpox infection in those kids with weakened immune systems. Avoiding all live vaccines is usually what is recommended, although some will give HIV positive children the chickenpox vaccine if their immune system is strong and healthy. Ask your HIV specialist what he or she would recommend before agreeing to have your child vaccinated for chickenpox.
The Measles Vaccine
There is some debate surrounding the measles vaccine and whether or not it should be given to HIV positive kids. Though it is recommended for children in general, there is a case of an HIV positive person dying from measles after receiving the vaccine. Other Recommended Vaccines

Thanx,I pray for a 230
My exam is different from most people,I got only 2 dr/pxt relationship question(thank God)very few pharmacology, bch and micro(wish i got more from these)but heavily tested in endocrine arrows pointing up/down,renals,GIt etc.only 2 questions from neuro imaging(one of them from the free 150 ques)
Like I said, they were not hard if you know what it means though sometimes you can't be 100% sure you got it right.

I choose mumps bcos I reasoned measles vaccine will have adverse effect in immunocompromised even though Fa recommends MMR.but when I browsed it later, there's an article that recommends measles vaccine in HIV bcos the benefits out ways the risk while mumps and rubella inf.is not fatal in HIV,measles is.
In 3wks,I will know if my guesses were right
