Help Failed step 1 twice! Need advice!

Hello fellow doctors and friends,

I just got my result and I failed a second time. I feel really discouraged now. I'm wondering if this is a sign that I'm not meant to be a doctor. I was really hoping that I passed. I studied hard and prayed everyday. I don't know what to do.

The first time I took the exam, I prepared by doing Kaplan Center Prep. However, I got distracted because my boyfriend broke up with me. It's a horrible excuse to let him interfere with my studies. Anyway, that is a big lesson that I learned. I also did Kaplan Qbank and UWorld. I was getting 40-50% on UWORLD. I did NBMEs also. Unfortunately I failed. I got a 182/72.

The second time, I thought I really studied hard. I felt like I knew more information. I even took DIT. I watched the videos twice. I was getting 70+ on UWORLD. I did UWORLD twice. On UWorld Self Assessment I got 180 for the 1st one and 190 for the 2nd one. I took NBMEs but didn't do so well but still took the exam. My result was 176/72.

I find my scores to be really really weird. I don't know how I can get both 72s but the 3 digit score is so different. I'm desperate.
  1. Can anyone give me advice?
  2. Can you recommend books that you used?
  3. What was your study schedule? I studied from 8am to 11pm?
  4. What was an indicator that you were ready?
Should I take another Prep Course?

I'm at my last straw. I hope someone out there can help me!!! Thank you for your help!!! Happy Holidays!

Why did you take the exam after failing the nbme??we all know the dos and donts of step 1
-study with KLN with videos(study them not just reading it)
-get pathoma and augment with goljan audio
-study with uworld(study it and understand every line not just reading it)
-go through FA atleast 3 times(forget DIT)
-take an nbme and never seat for exam until nbme gives your dream score
-in 6-8 months,write your exam experience(how you scored 250 after 2 failed attempts )
-ignore those stupid boys for now & good luck

So you decided to take Step 1 after doing poorly on the UWSA's and NBME's? That was a MAJOR mistake. Why even take the tests if you were going to take the real exam any way.

I used: Kaplan Lectures, UWorld, Kaplan Qbank... Actually know the material in these and don't just read for speed.

To be honest, residency in the United States is getting extremely hard. I hope for your sake that you have a visa as that may help you a bit.

I am so sorry to hear this... u made few mistakes.. 1) that when u tried NBME & there was low score at that time u have to wait & bulid urself more strong by repeating 1st aid & doing U WORLD question again....2) delete that man from ur memories & now start over again but this time not just reading but understanding things in depth... & try PASS programme this will help u ... wish u good luck..

Thank you for your reply! I'm a US citizen. But I heard it is getting really hard to get residency now. =( I'm extremely worried.

Thank you for your reply! Yah I'm not giving up just yet. I'll try doing it again. Does PASS really help? Is that what you did? I heard only bad reviews from PASS.

Hello blade! Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate the advice you gave me. Well just 3 days before the actual exam I took an NBME and didn't do well. I asked my friends what they thought. They told me if you are tired of studying and you feel confident that you did your best (the best that you can do) then go ahead and take the exam. I feel like that was the worst advice. I should have just rescheduled. I thought I knew my stuff, but I guess I'm wrong. Thank you again for your advice. I'm gonna work really hard and focus even more. Btw is it okay to retake an NBME exam? Like I already did NBME 1-6. Can I do them again as an assessment to see where I am? Thanks! Happy Holidays!!

I know residency in usa going to be tough but nothing in this world is easy, & u have advantage that u r USA citizen, from where u have completed ur Med school(usa or outside usa).. Now a days i am doing Pass programme videos.. i have downloaded it by Torrent, i donot know it is complete or not but i am doing it with KLN.. i know PASS is not fully covered all USMLE but i think it gives me linkage to differnt subject but it is just the supportive strategy , by the way what u have heard about PASS...

Hi, I think you should try Dr najeeb lectures. you can find them also on Youtube. Some might say that his videos are "time consuming" and that he is way too detailed, but I think he really puts things in order and can help you to strengthen your basic knowledge

Default hi

I failed step one the first time i took it, am even now scared to take it the second time as my confidence is very low.I think i will agree with what alot of pple have said, don't take the exam when you feel you are still lacking in terms of material and read and understand the concepts not just passing though .I believe this is what i did and now am struggling with U-world questions, so am actually planning on forfeiting the money and reapply afresh, still feel so crappy and knowledge deficient
