Smile Sudha1985 Step 1 Exam Experience

Well i gave my exam yesterday....The kind of relief after finishing the exam is undescribable....

Coming to the point........the exam is very doable....Not a beast to be tamed and all....we just feel like doing usmle world.... not a very big deal as many make it out to be......this is what I would like to comment on.......

-First having an optimistic attitude towards the exam takes us a long way........

-Being very thorough with the usmle world question bank is the key....Thorough to the level that just by looking at the first sentence of a question ...we know the answer.... i dont mean mugging .....just to be very well versed with it.....

-Then of course time immemorial the GREAT FIRST AID....at the same time important not to get blown away with the vast information all at one place...Key is to digest it slowly.......

-Fourthly pathoma....it does make learning so easy....What we feel as a complicated one is presented in such a simple manner that we never forget.....he made 21 hyd...17 ....11..def...aldosterone so easy....i was in complete awe ....

- not to get very bogged down if u dont get the expected scores on nbme.....Just to keep on working on our weak areas

Then atleast 2 weeks before the exam i would advice to do as many questions randomly from usmle world ...Timed random...i was doing like crazy about 300 questions per day....it just increases your speed of answering a question....and our reflexes of choosing an answer does get better...
and then in the evening work on the wrong questions...means the concept where we are lacking in .and fill the loophole...

few days before the exam to go through first aid very randomly....at the same time being not too stressed out is imp...

The day before the exam....only the imp topics in a very cool manner'...
night before the big day...i was planning to sleep 7 hrs tight ....it went hayware just cudnt get sleep ....so better to plan in advance whether to take ny medication and if it would suit u....
Lastly the D day.....i just wanted to go and experience what the real deal is.....Rest with god....
Very important to plan the breaks in advance....if Taking break after each block definitely to be a aware of the running minutes....God that time i realised why a minute is not longer....time just seems to fly away....
While doing the blocks i realised was that most of the times.....we arrive at the answer by reading the last sentence..just they would ask the mechanism
of action of acyclovir....but would be presented in such a long case ...so if u r running out of time...the last sentence...
Also the research type questions also can be cracked....if by just ruling out options...and some logic....I felt..

Every one marks questions to review later....better to mark what we feel as the answer for it in first round....we never know if we would get time again....
Very imp to be a fast test taker....your reflexes shud just work fine.....Never to ponder too much over one question....Too much risk...
Lastly The 7 hrs is completely endurable.....Times just flows away....Your resolve to ace the exam just keeps u alert no matter what....
some silly mistakes do give us nightmares after the exam....But i am adopting a mature defence mechanism.....SUBLIMATION...

Thought i shud share what i felt......

Every one can ace it with the right mindset and stratergy.... It is not Even near to difficult.....

Some important topics ...must go through exam...

Second messengers in and out...
Neuro anatomy pictures....
Biostatistics formulas....(usmle world biostatistics review is really good)....Everone must go thru....
CArdiac function curves
Developmental milestones
Lung...restrictive and obstructive ...curves
Lysosomal and glycogen storage disorders
renal....Graphs...
Agonist antagonist curves-Pharmac

Good luck to all preparing For step 1...........

hii,

sorry for the late reply...I was travelling so could'nt log in....
thanks a lot for your wishes...
If you are done with kaplan...
Better to start with u world....Best learning tool above all...
First better to do system wise i will give an example....
To do cardiovascular...have a fast read through first aid....
do u world questions timed from the same system...anat , histo,physio,patho- physio, patho.,pharmac and so on..
At the end of the day review wrong answers frm u world make sure u understand the explanations...read the topic frm first aid...the same frm kaplan very fast...The last is optional,,,
At the end of the day It is upto u to decide what suits best for u...

Good luck

Yes, i meant that....When doing system wise initially it takes an average 3 days to finish it,,,,Better not to take more than that,,,2 weeks before the exam u are so thorough that u can do abt 300 questions per day....Also i realised it is quite difficult to get all the 46 questions correct....some where 3 -4 goes wrong...When u have got all 46 correct in the blocks u do is when it means u have achieved perfection with the q bank....It does take repeated rounds...

3 weeks before the exam a crucial period....a lot depends on what we do at this time...

Keep on doing u world questions in patho...there are some 600 +...At the rate of 200 per day u can master in 3days...
In the evening start listening to pathoma,,,,u can do it at 1.5 speed....
allot atleast 2 hrs for pathoma....or whenever u feel tired and wanna take a break...listen.. General patho is a must... u shud be fine at the end of the week....Good luck

Star Thank you

Thanks for taking the time to share your valuable experience with us. And congrats on being done. Just wondering how anatomy went for you? Did you have a lot of questions? How did you prepare for it? Were there a lot of EKGs to interpret on the test?
Thanks!
All the best
Sarah

Anatomy was ok for me...it wasnt out of the world or anything...There are some specific topics in anatomy which are a must....once we are thorough in that ...some 1-2 odd questions shudnt deter us much...
Lymphatic drainage
Nerve injuries etc

i just got one EKG...I dont know whether i got it right...

First aid and u world covers almost all......

All the best

Nerve injuries-Brachial plexus and lower limb nerve injuries most imp
Again as i repeatedly say..make u world anatomy questions very thorough ......
of course physiology is included in the syllabus ....Each subject has its own weightage....
For pharmacology U world and first aid...Yes Great combination....You wont believe but it is true....

Better always do in timed mode ....try to finish the block as early as possible..keep track of how much time u take to complete....try to finish the block atleast 10-15 min early...keep yourself slightly anxious...(a weird idea) but works well while doing the blocks ...always do a block as if ur doing an exam...Fast...without drinking water,,,having snacks etc...It is because of the time constraint that many wud fall back ..had u got 2 min more for a question ur no of corrects would increase....

2 months ..a lot of time...The lesser the time the more effective our reading is...It wud take app 20 -25 days on an average to go through the entire u world...
Biochemistry....u world ..u.world ...u world....covers what u need to know...
First aid keep on revising ,,,,,going through the cycles almost every day for 10 min...U will master..

Have faith in yourself....

Good luck
