USMLE Books MedEssentials, thoughts?

Hi there,

I already have First Aid and will obviously have that as my base. But there are certain topics that I find FA covers poorly.

What are your experiences with Kaplan's MedEssentials?

Correct Answer

I had the same question .. And I did some research .. There is a new Medessentials which was released on October. It is supposed to be revised specially in the Pathology section , though It is still Black and white , the pages aren't that high quality.
Although some topics are poorly revised in First Aid , you do have to remember that First Aid is not a Review Book , It is designed to give you a concise review of topics , while you have to dig deep and understand those topics.
My personal opinion is:
If you are going with Kaplan , It would help you a lot cause they are the same , though it has some unnecessary information for step 1 , but again that's is purely my opinion.
FA on the other hand have so much more attractive and easy going figures and graphs , it is colored which is in advantage.
If you are still in doubt , do them both , or annotate one into another.
There are no pdf editions available on the web for the 4th and 3rd Edition , but I think you can get the 2nd edition in PDF version .
Best pf Luck.

Hello Doctor, i would give honest advice as i am using 3rd edition medessential as my review book. its a really nice book everything is given in comparison format its really good if are using kaplan as us base. even if use kaplan q bank u would find as if u have chosen real great book cause almost everything match and u can do two blocks of kaplan q bank a day.

but draw back is mnemonics aren't given so recall is a big problem one and when u come to u world u would find as if u are writing one complete new book(u world) in kaplan medesential. u decide on ur own.
i don't know whether people write so much when they do first aid and u world. will be happy if some one tells me that.
