Smile Neelmed Step 1 Experience

I am a medical student from India, currently in my final year. This forum has been of great help to me, so I wish to share my experience here.

I took the step 1 exam on 29th of November and got my results on 19th of December (exactly the 3rd Wednesday).

PREPARATION:

I first came to know about USMLE in my 2nd year. I gave a thought to it. I downloaded Goljan audios; really loved em but then I dropped the plan coz frankly speaking its a very long process. So I continued with the usual 2nd year stuff for next 6 months but I didn't see myself going anywhere. My concepts were not clear at all and that really haunted me. I never liked the usual text books people read like Robbins; I am not saying they are not good, they certainly are but somehow I didn't like these books. So I again started listening to Goljan audios and again loved em like anything. So finally I made up my mind of pursuing the dream of getting Internal medicine residency in US. Then I got all the material of Kaplan and stuff. More than anything, I started understanding medicine as whole. That was the best part of USMLE preparation for me. So during my 2nd year and prefinal, I continued reading the material. It was not a planned study. no hardcore schedules because I didn't plan to take my step soon enough. I was just enjoying myself. But then in final year, I realized it was time to sit for the exam. 29th Nov was the date. I had like 3 months to prepare. This was a hardcore preparation. In the first 2 months, I studied for 4-5 hours only but in the last month, I used to study for 9-10 hours a day.

MATERIALS USED:
Goljan for Pathology - wonderful book
Kaplan Lecture Notes - for Pharmacology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry and molecular biology, Biostatistics, Neuroanatomy and Genetics.
Costanzo for Physiology - absolutely loved this book. But i did my endocrine physiology from kaplan coz it was Conrad Fischer
BRS Behavioral sciences by Barbara Fadem - very good book.
My weakest link was anatomy except neuroanatomy, which I did from kaplan and that dude who teaches neuroanatomy is brilliant. I did anatomy mostly from first aid but I guess its not enough. My advice regarding anatomy is that you should go through Kaplan anatomy or HY anatomy at least once. There are not a lot of questions from anatomy but those 3-4 ques can make a diff to ur score.
FIRST AID - Its like the holy grail for USMLE. Absolutely must read. Read every word of it. Its a great book.

QUESTION BANKS:
During the 2nd year and prefinal, I used to do random ques from here and there; anything I could get my hands on. But during my actual 3 month preparatory time, for first 2 months, I was reviewing my material and first aid and I had an offline version of 2008 Uworld, I did that. but during the last month, I did Uworld online (1 month subscription). Its the best Qbank for UMSLE step 1. I did it subject-wise in timed mode. I got 81% but I guess doing it random is better. I also made separate notes from UWorld and they were really helpful. You can do that or u can scribble this extra stuff in ur first aid.

UWSA1- 257
UWSA2- 265
NBME form 13- 242

Actual STEP1 Score- 239/85

I was expecting above 240 but I am quite satisfied with 239
For me, NBME was a better predictor as it is with most of the people. Uworld overestimates your score by 15-20 points but I was aware of that.
I also did offline NBME forms 7,11 and 12. It was almost the same as form 13.

So this is it. I am done with USMLE step 1 . Feel free to ask any questions and please give some honest input on what are my chances to get Internal medicine residency with this step 1 score. I would really appreciate that

PS: I hope I didn't make it long and boring

Don't worry. You still have 2 months to prepare and believe me you can go from 50-60% to 80% in 2 months if u don't lose ur focus . As far as biostats is concerned, i used kaplan medical for that. Dr. Daugherty has done a great job explaining the fundamentals of biostats. You can also use BRS Behavioral sciences for biostats. Its also a good book. And go through your first aid again and again. That's the key.

Yes you can easily do it. Hardwork and persistence are the key. 5 months is alot of time. It will take you about 2.5 months to cover kaplan books n videos. Then in remaining time, u can do FA and revise ur stuff and then 1 month of Uworld.

Well the exam is neither too easy nor too difficult. They want most of the students to pass the test. First aid covers alot of stuff but i dont think you can rely on it solely to get a good score. I found molecular biology a little difficult. I screwed up 1 or 2 simple anatomy ques, so keep ur preparation to the fullest. Good luck

Default I need advice

Hello! Great post! Congrats for your Score, hard work always pays off. Thanks for the info! This is very helpful! I'm taking mine on thursday 27th and I'm afraid I will not be able to review FA entirely again before my exam! That's making me nervous because I have studied a lot (a year), plus I'm very tired now. I took an NBME on the 17th of this month and got 245 (Online 11 form), and UWorld Assesment one predicted 257. The next date available is Jan 15th, I'm very tired now, but I'm concerned about not reviewing FA again! I think I'm peaking in knowledge now so I don't know what to do. Please any advice is welcomed.

Thank you very much! :sorry:

Hey buddy! thanx alot. Well your scores are good. i don't think you should delay your test further. When we study alot, at the end of it, we always feel that we don't remember anything. It happened to me also. On the day of the test, I felt totally blank like I didn't know anything, but when i started with the test, everything came back. Its just nervousness. About reviewing FA, you can't do it now but you seem to be in a good shape. You still have 2 days. I think you should go through your weak topics only and revise them. Rest will be taken care of. All the very best mate

Hey! I did endocrine physiology from kaplan only. CVS, respiratory and renal from Costanzo BRS review book. Rest of it from FA and Uworld only. I don't think Costanzo is too big. By the way I am referring to the BRS physiology review book by Linda Costanzo. That's not a very big book.

Thanx buddy Well I don't know how much time do you have till ur test date. If you have more than 40 days, then go for a 2nd read and then start with uworld. if u have like a month, then start with uworld and simultaneously revise difficult topics from FA. Later if u have time, u can go thorugh the book pretty quickly.

Ohhh! Dude you have like an eon to go before u take ur test You can do 10 revisions of FA till then. Regarding Uworld, 1 month is enough. No idea about DIT. But still you have plenty of time, I say do it in 2 months- UW+DIT. That should work
