Smile My Step 1 Diary

Hello everyone.

So I started my step 1 preparations after taking and passing my step 2 CS about 3 months ago. I had prepared for step 1 before but did not take the exam because my NBME scores were just too low and honestly, now I know I was not prepared for the exam despite many months of studying KLN, UW and FA. I realized I studied badly and hoping I am doing the right thing now.

So I have decided to keep a Step 1 journal on the forum so that I do not lag behind my study plan.

Books I am using: KLN, BRS Behavioral Sciences, Pathoma, HY Anatomy, RR Pathology (just the first 8 chapters)

So far I have spent the last 3 months doing my first read for with KLN. I did not watch the videos again like before but I am reading every single book, page by page and making notes (except for pathology and gross anatomy). So here is my study plan:

January 7 - February 10, 2013 (5weeks): First Read completion
Week 1: Neuroanatomy (KLN)+Gross Anatomy (HY)
Week 2: Pathology 1 (Pathoma)
Week 3: Pathology 2 (Pathoma)
Week 4: Pharmacology 01 (KLN)
Week 5: Pharmacology 02 (KLN)
Kaplan Assessment-just to get a general feel of my loop holes

That would be the end of my first read as I am done with all the other subjects already (it took me 1month to go through Biochemistry and 1 month for Physiology I so pray it is worth it)

February 11 - March 31 (7 weeks): Second Read
Here I am not sure what I would do but I would go through my notes again and some topics in KLN that bug me a little but I will also read from FA. I already made a detailed study schedule which would change over time.
I also plan to complete with Kaplan Qbank - 46Q daily.
Take an NBME somewhere at the end.
I pray I can stick to this schedule.

April 1 - April 28 (4 weeks): Third Read
This would strictly be FA and UW (2 blocks daily, timed, mixed mode)
One or two NBMEs, etc.

I hope to take my exam by May 6, 2013

I will try to put up my weekly progress.
I study about 7-8h daily as i am also working full time.
I hope to take time off in the last month of my preparation to bury myself in the books.
Staying positive. All the best to all you preparing...this is one hard journey!

God help me!!!

Default A few days before Week 1

So this weekend I am trying to complete so stuff that I started and seem to be way ahead of schedule, which has never happened before and I feel good about it.

Saturday (today):
- Genetics (KLN - Gene mapping & Genetic diagnosis left...very boring )
- Embrology (KLN - wondering if I should use some other book for this)

Sunday:
- Neuroscience 01 (KLN): I think I will just kick into it since I have extra time.

Default Week 1 Complete...onto Week 2

Week 1 was a disaster!!
For some reason I was so tired and bored with Anatomy but managed to go through the whole thing with particular understanding in Neuroscience. So I am glad.

Week 2
Just started and it is going well. I may even complete my Pathoma reading in less time than I planned which is good if I continue at this rate. i must admit that having gone through all the basic sciences, pathology is a lot easier to understand. Already in Chapter 5 of Pathoma today and I am really reading slowly.

God help me. So far, so good.

where are you from? You seem to be a very dedicated person. I'm also preparing for Step 1 and like you I work full time and study as well.
Good luck,

hey, thanks for the encouragement. I am from Cameroon, in Central Africa and that is where I did me school. I owe my discipline to God, who also gave me strict parents and great boarding schools here.

I'm not sure how to help you but to be honest, I never really follow my schedule on a daily basis. more like weekly since some days are better than others...like in the past two days I've slacked a bit as I was so ill that I couldn't get out of bed...

the thing I'd advice you to do is be realistic with your plan and goals and give lots of room for catchup...and allow ur schedule to be flexible that way you can adjust as the days go by. also, think of all the money and time you put into this, those alone drive me wake up daily at 4:30am.

I wish you the best. I'm willing to help you whatever way I possibly can.

Default Week 2 Complete

So week 2 went okay. I got sick along the way so I did not study for some days but I am trying to catch up in week 3. I hope to finish Pathoma by Thursday and start pharm by Friday or Saturday.

So far, so good.

Default Week 5

So Week 5 is complete and I have officially completed my first...sickness has been a major setback but I managed to keep to my program. SO next week I am starting my second read along with Kaplan Qbank...I am so so scared that my memory would not be as good as expected.

God help me!!!

Default not cool

SO somewhere in the past month I lost my laptop and some major personal effects that just shut down my studying for like a month. Not to mention the power outages and no internet connection for days and sometimes weeks. This has just disrupted my whole study schedule.

SO ai am barely starting my second read and doing questions and so far so good. Done with Biochemistry, Genetics and Immunology and I am comfortable with my level of understanding and recall, though the exhaustion from work is not helping.

It does not look pretty that I may not be ready for my exam before June this year, but I keep pushing. I hope to have no more mishaps in the next two or three months so that I can focus and clear this thing once and for all.

My diary Continues:

This week: I just completed Immunology and Genetic and will start on Microbiology over the weekend for about 5days, then do general path and pharm.

Will keep you posted on my progress.

God help us all.
